Shadow of the Colossus Preview

Shadow of the Colossus, the spiritual sequel to the incomparable Ico, is being previewed on Gamespot this weekend. From the article: "Shadow of the Colossus' story features the same timeless fairy-tale quality as ICO, albeit with a more mature theme. The story here is essentially one of love. You're cast as a nameless hero on a quest to save a loved one, and your journey will take you to an ancient temple where you discover the power to save your love's spirit. However, in order to unlock this power, you must obtain the essence of 16 colossi, mountainous gargantuan beasts that roam the land. How can a man who's about the size of an ant next to these beasts do such a thing armed with only a sword and a bow and arrow? That's for you to find out."

I don't know, but it probably involves lots of skeleton keys and switches.

Yeah, that works some of the time, but then whenever you go to the future by pulling out the Master Sword in the Temple of Time, you lose the ability to use the sling and must use a bow & arrow instead.

Bear in mind Gamespot was playing an early demo where they only got up to the first boss, so who knows what the rest of the game will be like? Also, if I'm not mistaken, they did mention that there was a bit of travelling involved in getting to the first boss, so it won't be just boss fight after boss fight. At least I hope not :-)

You're right! It'll be boss fight after boss fight, interspersed with 3 hour long travels from the location of the one boss to the next, so it'll be more realistic.

So, little shaped blocks... all falling... nothing else. really, they look like you could make very interesting patterns with them, but where is the rest of the game, it seems like something might bemissing, perhaps a plot. Infinite falling blocks that get faster and faster makes... uh... well, actually it's one of the greatest games ever.

What does that prove? Don't judge a game by the lack of a description of a plot. Asshole.

I remember an old genesis/mega drive game called alien soldier that I had the pleasure of trying out. It was made by Treasure (makers of Ikaruga, Bangai-O, Gunstar Heroes, and Radiant SilverGun among others) and the game was a VERY vibrant fast-paced side scrolling shooter that consisted of only about 10 seconds of side-scrolling combat which was followed by an intense bossfight. Weather it be a mid-boss or a end-of-level boss; each one was completely unique and the game itself really was one boss-fight after another. It was a fantastic game and I'd rather be fighting 16 unique enemies that each require skill to take down than the non-stop generic shadow people of ICO.

You're looking at it the wrong way. These are not boss fights like anything you have seen before. the bosses are both enemy and enviroment. they are of such large scall that getting around them (and other environmentals) to find their weak points are the puzzels and the rest of the game. this is not some hack and slash game. Like ICO before it you are not so much worried about being killed by the monsters as you are trying to figure them out and how to destroy them. If you look closely at some of the screen shots around you will even see that some of the monsters have railings and walkways and ladders on them. This is just from what little I have seen and read, but so far it seems like a great concept. And of course it will have stunning award winning visuals like ICO before it, so you could easily spend hours just looking around.

Ico was released for the PS2, and can be found cheap (when it can be found - it goes in and out of availability pretty often, especially new copies).

If you have a PS2, you might want to give it a try. Aside from the Wild Arms series and maybe Legend of Dragoon (FF7/FF8 rip-off), it's the only Sony-developed game I've ever cared about, including GT and all those American platformers. It reminded me of the pre-Smilebit Smilebit feel (read: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Hundred Swords) in both environmental setting and overall feel, although the gameplay is totally different between all of these games.

Pretty good game, but not exactly Zelda-level when it comes to ambience and scope. It's the only time Sony has ever impressed me on the software front.
