Azureus Decentralizes Bittorrent

BobPaul writes "While the eXeem project to decentralize Bittorrent remains in open beta, the Azureus Java Bittorrent project has recently released a major update that, among other things offers 'a distributed, decentralised database that can be used to track decentralised torrents. This permits both "trackerless" torrents and the maintenance of swarms where the tracker has become unavailable or where the torrent was removed from the tracker.' It doesn't contain the search functionality of eXeem, but it's also not a beta product and is licensed under the GPL. Could this and compatible clients be the replacement to SuprNova and Lokitorrents, or does the lack of search negate its effectiveness?"

You probably need the new Java files...

Before I upgraded java, Azureas took like 95% CPU when doing nothing.

I would say Java's just a waste, actually, not that Java is wasted on Sun.

Good idea, piss poor implementation. To begin with, OO is not the end-all, and having a language force that down your throat when it isn't even necessary is a PITA.

Add in the horrendously slow execution times for _most_ Java apps (SWT apps, whatever. If I need that blasted JavaVM, it's a Java app.), the bloat the language has experienced, and the fact that it ties my hands six ways from Sunday when I try to write code, and you have a lose-lose situation.

Python isn't incredibly fast, either. And it can be a large pain in the arse to code for. But at least it isn't completely OO based, and I can use objects where I need to, and leave them the hell alone when I don't.

the java version works....i wouldn't say perfectly. I have been using Azureus for almost two years now, and have no problems with it other than it is written in java....which is a horrible language. It takes up a bit too much memory for just downloading torrents. My roomate talks about java all time (he's a programmer) and how shitty it is, boy was he pissed when he had to take an entire class devoted to programming in it. needless to say he didnt do any of his work in there and dropped the class. anyways, back to the point, an azureus-similar program, not in java, would be a very nice alternative. (note: i have not used any other bittorrent programs for lack of wanting to install-configure-not like and start process over again, so there may be a much better alternative, as i know there are quite a few)
