The Xbox 360 Unveiled
You may or may not have caught the Xbox 360 unveiling on MTV Thursday night, but the internet will provide. A plethora of sites have photos, videos, commentary, specifications, and interviews about the new system. Your fellow readers have pulled together to provide links to: 1up.com, Joystiq, Gamespot, The BBC, CNN, NYT, Gamespy, Team Xbox, Voodoo Extreme, Anandtech, and eToyChest. The official Xbox 360 site opened last night as well for word straight from the source. For more official images Ourcolony.net has been 'solved', and now features an OurColony specific video preview. Finally, for commentary on the event, the Video Game Ombudsman provides an alternative to the press releases. From the post: "Kyle Orland (9:28:42 PM): The future of gaming is a girl in a blue dress?
Dan Dormer (9:28:47 PM): The future of gaming is a girl with a bag?
Kyle Orland (9:28:57 PM): She's the Xbox! OMG!"
What I don't understand about most linux users is the "do it for yourself" ideology -- why would I want to put in the time and effort to make an application work (or even to write one myself) when there is a host of closed source alternatives that just work, provided by world leaders such as Microsoft? It's not a laziness thing, I grew up on a farm and now hold a PhD in molecular biology so I am no slouch when it comes to physical or mental work. When it comes down to whether I can pay for a program that denies me access to the source code, but does its job well or an open source alternative coded by the guy with a hairy back who lives in a basement down the street, I believe it is better to pay for the quality product than get something inferior for free and have to tweak it endlessly in order to get a satisfactory result. Worse still is removing the "personal touches" put into most software of this type. If I suggest something to my boss that contains such choice phrases in the code as "Free Mitnick" (whom I believe to be an incarcerated cyber-terrorist, but feel free to correct me) or "Fuck Bush" (many open-saucers are violent liberalists) my job would be about as secure as a typical linux webserver. This isn't even taking into account the names of the applications themselves: The Gimp (I'm sorry? BDSM on my PC? No thank you.), Felchmale (I think this is a homosexual sex act) and Mencoder (can women use it too?) all come to mind. What it comes down to at the end of the day is experience. Experience from the coders, marketers, tech support people who are all paid to to their jobs and do them well. Would you want a handjob from a 12 year old prostitute? Even if it was free, would you still take the awkward jerkings of a preteen over a $50 squeeze from a professional? That is how I see this whole debate. Your dick ends up covered in jism at the end, but there is one hell of a difference in the route you took to get there. Of course, some will always prefer the inferior route, in the handjob realm as well as software. In the former situation we call these people paedophiles. What is so different about the second group?
Well I hope Mr Gates is proud of himself.
I think that anyone will notice this box and immediately notice that it doesn't fit in with any decor or that those 'self contained' curves resist any attempt to fit it into any environment.
This will be noticed for years. Not necessarily a good thing. It may be noticed as an obstruction.
Overall, I wouldn't own one becauses it clashes with the decor. Then again, I wouldn't own one in the first place.
MSBPodcast.com The opinions expressed here are my own. If you don't like 'em... Think up your own stuff.
"ACCEPT for Goldeneye"? Are you from Boston or just some kind of retard?
One thing I just don't get is that while the new consoles seem to mostly favor 1st person games (just look at the launch lineup of the 360), the controller is still mostly intended for 3rd person games. I mean, compare the 1st person experience of mouse and wasd to a gamepad, the pad just sucks so bad you don't want to touch it with a 10 feet long stick. I mean what's the deal with the pad. Shouldn't it be getting a makeover for 1st person games (like a gyromouse or something. Any news on the revolution controller?
ANYONE who buys an XBox 360 before seeing Playstation 3 live demos is wacko jacko.
I'm SO going to cream my pants when I get to play Gran Tourismo 4 on Playstation 3.
How is it someone with such a low UID has such a low IQ as well?
Ok I'll feed ya,
So is that how my PC can emulate:
spectrum
C64
Amiga
BBC
Apple
many types of nintendo
many types of sega
Arcade machines
Playstation
The grass in Tiger Woods '06 looked like a 3DFX Voodoo 1 texture blur-mess. Another game that they showed, and I don't know which, was running at about 15fps. This is what 3 * 3.2ghz) gets us?
Also, is it possible that this new box is even LARGER than the first?

If this ships with three real CPUs that are mostly similar to the ones that Apple uses, for less than $500, lots of Apple fanbois, myself included, are going to wonder wtf is up with that, and why Apple can't do the same. I think there is still a lot that remains to be seen.
Because Apple add a ton of artificial price onto each Mac sold for 'branding reasons'. Ironically though even a 2.5 Ghz g5 is utterly feeble when compared to even a middle of the road of Windows PC with an average GPU when it comes to 3D.
It will be interesting to see how much more oomph the Xbox 360 has in the 3d deptartment compared to the current lineup of G5s, and what that says about how Apple are either deliberately/accidentally crippling their hardware or graphics drivers or both.
