A Wiki for Computer Modification

Paul Stamatiou writes "A few students from the Georgia Institute of Technology have created the first computer modifications wiki-style website, TheModWiki.org. It includes an extensive mod words glossary, links to other great modding resources, and many pc modification How-To guides and project logs. "This website was created by a few college students at the Georgia Institute of Technology that were fed up with having to scour the internet for the pc modding information they needed to help them with their own mods." TheModWiki.org is planning on reviewing many items from PC parts manufacturers and having several monthly contests with free giveaways."

      Yeah, talk about being pwned.

Sounds like they forgot to overclock their network card, or maybe they already did and the neon flashing fan for the card failed and the machines temperature reached such a height that the water cooling overheated and burst a pipe and the box melted into a rainbow puddle.

Usually people host sites on their own server using Tech's static IP addresses the provide you. They're using a server not in the Tech IP range, which got slashdotted faster than crap. That really makes me wonder if this is even a real story or not.... I mean how can computer moders not know how to build a server?

Sometimes the website software is overloaded and not the hardware/bandwidth. Every time that wiki is loaded several connections back and forth are made to a Mysql server to retrieve the content. If things are not configured for a high load it could max out at a certain number of users, 100 for example.

Do you know how I can fix this Rick? I am obviously more of a hardware guy, but the server is running Suse Linux 9.2 ... I have the php memory limit set to 48megs in /etc/php.ini, with mm turck cache installed. The server seems fairly capable like you said its not the hardware... 2.4C P4, 1GB DDR400 2-3-2-6. What OS would be good for serving, if it matters much? Thanks

The server is not on Tech's campus right now. It will be moved onto campus when school starts again approximately August 20th. So essentially the server is on a normal cable/dsl line right now. It probably got slashdotted so fast only because every page request has to use a mysql database. The entire site is dynamic.

I don't know if this is good or bad. It's like adding a cultural elements to an encyclopedia?!

It's like going to an official Ford dealer and seeing Saleen's modded mustang in addition to the regular Fords. It adds confusion but at the same time more info and variety.

The definition of a wiki has nothing to do with an encyclopedia despite the fact that the most popular wiki is one. A wiki is just a website that allows for collaboration with other people in the creation of information. Then again people visiting the website can confuse it with wikipedia because the design is so similar.
