Neverwinter Walks The Plank

Seen via Gamespot, news of a new Neverwinter Online Module at the Bioware Community Store. Entitled Pirates of the Sword Coast, the new module offers up "[a] tale of pirates, parrots, and peril! As a sailor aboard the Midnight Rose merchant ship, you've stopped in Neverwinter to gather supplies before a long trip south. A most peculiar course of events follows, slowly unraveling a plot of whale-sized proportions. Embark on a swashbuckling journey on the high seas. Polly want adventure?"

    Does this module run on a pirated copy of NWN? Or does it have DRM?

      Just peeked real quick at Bioware's site and one of the requirements to run it was a working internet connection while playing.

      Pirated copies of, say, IE for Windows need a working internet connection, yet they still work.

      What I was thinking was that the game must connect to their servers during play and perhaps they check to see what serial number is attached to your copy to see if it's a valid copy or whatever.

      That's what they do. I don't mind though because it supports a great gaming company. I don't believe bioware has ever made a bad title. The modules usually only cost a few dollars anyway.

      We won't be purchasing it for our LAN games if that's the case.

      I run several NWN servers on a LAN and haven't had to have internet access turned on in the past really don't want it for numerous reasons...mostly security.

      As an aside, when I've run LANs and HAVE turned on internet access to do something, anyone who shows up with a pirated copy cannot connect to the different running dedicated servers on that box.

      I run a lot of different games so I tell the offender to either buy the game or play one of the games that he's actually purchased.

      Basically every copy of the module authenticates itself with the Bioware master server. You buy the module from the Bioware store, they mark on your account details that the module was bought, let you download the thing, and each time you start a new game or load the saved game, the game checks your account details.

      Yes, it could be cracked, but with these prices, why bother? Plus, Bioware is definitely one of those game companies worth supporting.

      Now, if I only had a credit card to buy these modules with, I'd be a happy gamer - too bad all digital-only game services want digital-only money, it seems...

      You obviously don't know too many pirates. (I mean the bullshit ISDA definition, not the definition which I presume this module is using.)

      Has been cracked. I can decrypt the modules. Why? Cause I can. (And I've my own reservations about what happens when Bioware's master server finally goes away.)

    How...no, why is this news-worthy? Don't get me wrong - I used to be a diehard NWN fan But this seems more like a NWN advertisement than a news article. I don't see anything special in this module (other than the pirating puns).

      It's news to me. A friend of mine was also a die hard NWN fan, looked like a good RPG game and engine but I was involved in other games at the time. I might want to check it out now. There are very few titles out there Pirate themed.

      As to why it's news... It's about a NEW module for a popular title. Just because it happens to be about a product that you have to purchase doesn't mean it's spam or some subversive advertising. Nerly every freacking article posted to games.slashdot.org is about a gaming product, do you get this bent out of shape every time a story about a new game is announced on Slashdot? I for one would most likely not have found this information on other sites, probably because I don't read other gaming sites very often because Slashdot does a fine job of bringing me the top tier of gaming news.

      Yeah, it's just horrible that someone would inform people of new games and addons that they might be interested in but probably haven't heard about.

      Zonk may have a lot of flaws as an editor, but this isn't one of them.

    I, and the rest of my weekly NWN group, are ecstatic about this. Why? Unlike the other modules released so far, this one will work in multiplayer. It's all about the co-operative play. That being said, we're planning on seeing if it'll work with the Linux standalone server, if everyone needs to buy a copy, etc, etc.

    Now if they'd just make some more epic-level modules!

    I just wanted to say, I realise that a lot of the adventure games we used to know and love are now the basis of OPRG (forget all that MM business) which gives you the linear rich storyline, with side tasks, as well as charcter progression and combat. (without those they woudl just be multiplayer adventure games).

    I would like to see more team puzzles, like those anti-squirrel bird feeders, that when two squirrels team up, they can share a chance to eat the bounty inside.

    Perhaps positional, trust, or synchronised team work puzzles (like moving from square to square in various orders, or balancing on a pivot to press two buttons, or suchlike) would benefit such games (cue patents, bah.)

    PS: I hate the sony patent for that literally wet ware (not even that) idea of sending stuff into the brain. it wasn't even a real patent - i.e. it was a theoretical patent.

    I have played NwN online quite a bit. Find yourself a nice persistent world server, make your ultimate barbarian, and have at it! The online experience is pretty cool.

    I can say this I guess because among other things, I'm a DM on a popular NwN server! When the Town Crier starts shouting, you know the manure is gonna hit the bellows. Grab your trusty greataxe, check how many heal potions you have left, and follow the guy in front of you because he's probably heading right for the thick of it.

    There's still a lot of fun to be had with this game and it runs great on Linux. It crashes constantly for me in Win2K but it runs pretty stable in Gentoo for some reason (go figure).

    And no I'm not going to say what server I DM on, the last thing I need is a million /. n00bie lusers logging in and ruining the experience with all of your "All your castle are belong to me" and "In monster cave, monster kils YOU!" and "Imagine dual wielding these babies!" witticisms. All I can say is seek and ye shall find.

      I'm new to NwN and I'm enjoying the single player quite a bit. So far my sojourn into multiplayer has pretty much sucked rocks. Too many 12 year old idiots running around ruining the gameplay. Is this any different on a DM'd server?

      You didn't address this in your post, but does your experience lead you to think that a multiplayer expansion like "Pirates" here will go over well?

      I hope it does. MMORPG needs more pirates, double cool it they're undead pirates; yarr!

    Which was one of the greatest games ever.

    Come on BioWare... stop milking this old engine (and its so-streamlined-it-sucks interface)

    Bring us Baldur's Gate III !!!

    Until then there's always The Elder Scrolls: OBLIVION to look forward to...

    As much as I would love to see another Baldur's Gate game from BioWare, the series ended in Throne of Bhaal. The Bhaalspawn storyline, which was the main plotline for the entire series, is finished.

    Not only that, but BioWare is done with the AD&D universe for the time being and is focusing on their own game world for the (upcoming?) release of Dragon Age. So I highly doubt it will happen any time soon, if ever.
