2005 Machinima Festival This Weekend

An anonymous reader writes that "Village Voice has a small article by Julian Dibbell about the Machinima Film Festival that takes place this Saturday (Nov. 12th) at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. The festival is also holding their annual awards on Friday night. For me, the highlight is their honoring David Wright for creating Keygrip (the program behind the creation of Quake movies like Blahbalicious and Operation Bayshield) - which is a nice nod to machinima's roots. Here is a wiki link for Machinima if you want to know more. One of the more popular movies (recently anyway) is Red vs. Blue made by recording Halo sessions.

  2. Machinima for Quake by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 4, Interesting

Whenever there's a discussion of machinima, I never hear anyone mention Quake, it's all about RvB and Source these days. I'd be suprised if more than two people in the festival have ever heard of Keygrip, or machinima for Quake.

I remember trying Keygrip back in the day, but it felt too difficult and I could never get a grip on it. Har har.

I can't wait! While my little film didn't make nomination, it did make selection along with three other films made by my students at SummerTech last summer! The films in question are Retro Cop, The Button, Double Dare, and 1984. Here's the selection list: http://festival.machinima.org/modules.php?name=Con tent&pa=showpage&pid=5 If you happen to swing by, be sure to say hello, I'll be at the Fountain Head Machinimation software booth.

The old ones are the best. If you want to watch some great Machinima for Classic Doom, check out Imp Encounter. This is based on a well-known fanfic story written about Doom. The original Doom did not have any scripting ability so Machinima for it has only really taken off in the past couple of years.

The Museum of the Moving Image is pretty cool, I went there when I was on vacation in NY this summer. The highlight of their exhibits (for me anyway) was the original model of the Tyrell Corporation building from Blade Runner. When I saw it I geeked-out, no other way to describe it.
