2005 Machinima Festival This Weekend
An anonymous reader writes that "Village Voice has a small article by Julian Dibbell about the Machinima Film Festival that takes place this Saturday (Nov. 12th) at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. The festival is also holding their annual awards on Friday night. For me, the highlight is their honoring David Wright for creating Keygrip (the program behind the creation of Quake movies like Blahbalicious and Operation Bayshield) - which is a nice nod to machinima's roots. "
Is this the end of the Hollywood-based, profit-driven, money-grubbing, piracy-preventing, your-rights-violating, politician-donating-to movie empire?
I, for one, welcome our stiltedly-animated overlords.

Here is a wiki link for Machinima if you want to know more. One of the more popular movies (recently anyway) is Red vs. Blue made by recording Halo sessions.
Whenever there's a discussion of machinima, I never hear anyone mention Quake, it's all about RvB and Source these days. I'd be suprised if more than two people in the festival have ever heard of Keygrip, or machinima for Quake.
I remember trying Keygrip back in the day, but it felt too difficult and I could never get a grip on it. Har har.
O RLY?
The use of Machinima is forbidden by the Teachings of Yevon!
Pray with the Fayth for forgivness, for these transgressions.

VOTE!
See, that's why I love this guy. Not only is David Wright an excellent hitter, a marvelous third baseman, and an all around good guy, but now it seems he's also a programmer.
You go, David Wright! I'm very glad to have you representing my New York Mets!
I find it hard to believe that such a festival is being held in Astoria. It's a nice town and all but this time of year it is cold and wet. After you look at the Astoria Megler bridge and the Astor Column that's it. Even fort Clatsop burned down.
Maybe it is a good idea, look at films inside warm and dry , or go outside and and get rained on. Yep , film is good.
Not this year, i only just released the first episode, but maybe next year. My show, The Monster Within is a machinima I've started work on using Phantasy Star Online.
OK, this machinima festival is at the Museum of the Moving Image over in Astoria, eh? Well, guess what? There *is* no MotMI in Astoria, Ohio! This story is a total fraud!
Seriously, can we get a little context?
Computers are useless. They can only give you answers.

I can't wait! While my little film didn't make nomination, it did make selection along with three other films made by my students at SummerTech last summer! The films in question are Retro Cop, The Button, Double Dare, and 1984. Here's the selection list: http://festival.machinima.org/modules.php?name=Con tent&pa=showpage&pid=5 If you happen to swing by, be sure to say hello, I'll be at the Fountain Head Machinimation software booth.

And of course the wikipedia article mentions a lot of the *actual* roots - unlike Keygrip (not to underestimate its value, but these kinds of things have been around much longer than Quake).

Located in Astoria, NY - on the museum site - about us and directions.
Where would be the best place for a newbie to start playing around with Machinima? Is there opensource for this? Should I just experiment with it though Sims2? Or is there something better/easier?
C'mon, mods, are you too lazy to even RTFS?
The 'Computer Space' Hot Circuits: web page dedicated to old arcade games is interesting. You can even download the ROM of each game and emulate it using MAME. FUN STUFF! :)

Good quote:
There are deeper reasons why these games endure. Arcade games familiarized an entire generation with computers and screen-based interaction. They remain an object lesson in game design. Despite their technologically complex origins, they can be experienced as simple but intense pleasures, with engaging play mechanics and elegant interfaces. --Carl Goodman, Curator of Digital Media

The old ones are the best. If you want to watch some great Machinima for Classic Doom, check out Imp Encounter. This is based on a well-known fanfic story written about Doom. The original Doom did not have any scripting ability so Machinima for it has only really taken off in the past couple of years.
were you expecting to see a sig here? perhaps you'd rather see the inside of an ambulance!
The Museum of the Moving Image is pretty cool, I went there when I was on vacation in NY this summer. The highlight of their exhibits (for me anyway) was the original model of the Tyrell Corporation building from Blade Runner. When I saw it I geeked-out, no other way to describe it.
Ceci n'est pas une sig.
anonymous reader? Bah! Coward! Translation: It should say Anonymous Coward, not reader :D

Astoria is the center of the Greek diaspora in the United States, so it is not like there is hardly anything to see there. Or atleast it used to be. The muslims have and are continuing to take it over, much like they are doing with France!
If anyone is attending try going to Mediterranean Foods in Astoria or Titan and try the Fage Greek yougurt. It puts all American yogurt brands to shame.
I never understood the popularity of red vs blue. I can't seem to bear watching more than 30 seconds of a video, and I've tried several episodes. It's just.... bad, boring, and has pointless "plots". Maybe I'm just getting old or something...
The demoscene is still way cooler.
