OPM's Big List of Games To Play
1up is running a feature from Official Playstation Magazine, an exhaustive list of 100 games for Sony platforms you must play ... before you die! From the article: "We couldn't go it alone. We asked the top PlayStation game designers, producers, and members of the press to submit their picks, and we've included what they had to say. No list is ever perfect. But perfection was never our goal. In the end, we hope this list is one that, if you were to play all the games in it (and you conceivably can since many are still available at retail or on eBay), will make you a supremely well-rounded gamer. Maybe you'll find, as we have, that games have the power to entertain, challenge, inspire, and affect you in ways you never thought possible."
Sure we could do this,
1. Fuzion Frenzy.
1. Project Gotham Racing.
3. NHL 2k Series
4. Jade Empire
5. Kotor
6. Halo
7. Halo 2 (just to piss you off troll)
8. Rainbow Six 3
9.Splinter Cells
And you're right I can't think of any more... oh wait.
Doom3, Fable etc. Eat well damn troll!
Some of these have merits, but others are just plain idiotic.
I'm paraphrasing here, but:
"Metal Gear Solid was released at the same time as Ocarina of Time, which is why I have yet to play Zelda. Who cares about a deku tree when there are terrorists with nukes to stop?" -Guy who made Burnout series, which, suprise suprise, is no longer being made for the Cube. With biased dickweeds like this working in the industry, no wonder Nintendo can't get third parties to support their consoles.
"Crash Team Racing took the Mario Kart formula and perfected it." - Some guy from 1up. I mean seriously. CTR is what Mario Kart could be if it was perfect? Gimme a freakin break! Guess what came out the same gen? Mario Kart 64! Is that not perfect already? I know MK for the DS improved on it, but for consoles without a second screen to display an overhead map, and taking the online component out... You don't get better in kart racing than Mario Kart 64, unless you REALLY like Double Dash for some reason. Crash Team F'n Racing...
Born to Play
An exhaustive list includes all possible values. An "exhaustive list" of the "top X" of something is an oxymoron.
It's always a long day... 86400 doesn't fit into a short.
What a pathetic list.
A crappy racing game that can't even run at 60.
A couple mediocre shooters.
And a bunch of stuff that has better pc versions.
Wow, dude you totally showed the GP!
I'm a gamer, but have been PC-only for the past 20-something years. Really. I haven't owned a console since the original Atari, since every time I've investigated the consoles, I haven't been impressed with the lack of enjoyable--to me--games. My impression of the consoles is that they cater pretty much exclusively to the "twitch" gamer, not to someone who prefers a more thinking-style of game. I like war games (traditional hex-and-turn-based, and RTS), some RTS (loved Homeworld, Ground Control, Close Combat, and similar), Civ (class all its own), and some shooters (enjoyed Battlefield 2 in the beginning, Call of Duty). It just seems that too many console games solely reward people who enjoy repetition. It's also probably because I won't play most twitch games long enough to develop any skill, so I'm mostly a noob loser.
In the new crop of consoles, are there some must-have titles that might lead me to reconsider my dislike of consoles?
What'dya mean there's no BLINK tag!?
Many of these games are available on other platforms:
Tomb Raider II - PC
Resident Evil 2 - GameCube
Metal Gear Solid - Multiple platforms, including NES and C64
Spyro the Dragon - GBA
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus - PC
Rayman 2: The Great Escape - N64
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 - XBox, GameCube
SSX Tricky - XBox, GameCube
Dance Dance Revolution - Arcade and multiple platforms
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - GameCube
Medal Of Honor: Frontline - Xbox, GameCube
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 - XBox, GameCube
Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time - XBox, GameCube, PC
Soul Calibur II - XBox, GameCube
Beyond Good & Evil - XBox, GameCube
Madden NFL 2004 - XBox, GameCube (Madden 2005 also available for PalmOS)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 - XBox, GameCube
James Bond 007: Everything Or Nothing - XBox, GameCube
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory - XBox, GameCube
Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition - XBox
Timesplitters: Future Perfect - XBox, GameCube
Star Wars Battlefront II - XBox, PC
Resident Evil 4 - GameCube (released 10 months prior to PS2 port)
Lego Star Wars - XBox
That's just a quick scan of the games on the list*. The article tries to hype the Sony machine(s) by making it look like these games are exclusive to the PlayStation 1 and/or 2, but many of these games are available for other platforms. [And in many cases look better on other platforms.]
If you stick to nothing but Sony exclusives, the list becomes much shorter.
___
* All I did was a quick Google search for each of the above titles, so they may be available for other platforms as well.
I know i'm not supposed to like 2d games any more, but I'm bored of FPS (quake, duke, BF2 etc) and car chase/race games. Can anyone recommend some good scrolling (don't care whether its horizontal or vertical) shooters for the pc (don't care if they're native or emulated). Any era, old or new games - something stupid, fast and fun.
defender (arcade)
datastorm (amiga)
swiv (amiga)
raiden (arcade/psx)
r-type (arcade) is ok but a bit slow.
I like the look of some of the pc-engine stuff - any recommendations. Perhaps neo-geo also.
Thanks in advance!
20+ Xbox games could be picked just by looking at the top 100 list they posted because they are made for both the PS2 and Xbox. The Playstation had some great original games but the PS2 shares a lot of titles with other systems.
By the end of 2004, though, none of us was laughing, mostly because we were all too busy trying to master the dual-analog controls necessary to roll up thumbtacks and beach balls and penguins and judo masters and toolsheds and anything else that got in our way.
Trying to master the dual analog controls!?! What the Korea? Were they supposed to be hard to master because I think I was an expert within 5 minutes.
When Peter Molyneux called Lara Croft a "believable heroine."
That was enough for me.

OMP's Essential 100: PS1, PS2, and PSP Games You Must Play Before You Die from 1UP.com
Hmmm.... 1UP.com has been making me feel a little light headed lately...
So you're up to 11. Wake me up when you reach, like, 15 or something.
I could quibble about a couple choices, but all in all, it's a pretty solid list.
I'm sure everyone will find one or two games they think don't deserve to be there, but that's the nature of the beast.
I have to check over lunch to see if I still own a copy of Bushido Blade...

All opinions expressed herein are my own, and not those of my employers, who are appalled.
Perhaps a minor nitpick, but Final Fantasy Tactics wasn't nearly the first tactical/simulation RPG. The Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem series preceded it (by one and two generations, respectively), and there were plenty of similar games on the PC, too (check Spiderweb Software's Exile/Avernum series).
--- Bwah?
what games would you add to the list?
A few that I can think of are:
Ratchet and Clank (the origional).
Final Fantasy 8 (if FF10 is good enough for the list, this definately is good enough to make the list)
I would also replace Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty with Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. (its the exact same game except they added 350+ VR missions, 150+ Alternative missions, five Snake Tales missions, and boss survival mode. All that for the same low price as Sons of Liberty!)
I look forward to seeing what games you would add to the list!
is Castle Shikigami 1 repackaged for the US. I've heard the foobared the story, but the gameplay should be intact, and it's dirt cheap off ebay.
Hi! I make Firefox Plug-ins. Check 'em out @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-mp3-podcaster/
"Lara Croft is the only videogame character to have achieved international-cultural-icon status"
I believe Pac-man was an international cultural icon 15-20 years before Lara Croft. Add to the list Mario, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and Frogger, at least. I'd be willing to bet more people recognize Pac-man than they do Lara Croft. Most people likely see Lara Croft as Angelina Jolie these days.
It's like sex, except I'm having it!
You better play the games first!
Tomba on the PS1 and God of War on the PS2 are the only 2 games I don't have in my collection which would happen to be exclusive and that I would be interested in. My PS2 game collection is around 40 titles; none of them are EA titles or games which are out on other platforms, but not many of them are super must haves (except ones like ZOE2 and the DDRs) -- because the PS2 does not get as many must-haves as the GameCube (to a gamer of my tastes).
The majority of the non-EA games, such as Soul Calibur 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3, have versions on other platforms which are superior. It is redundant to list Soul Blade when the Dreamcast had both Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Soul Calibur.
Tiger Woods, Madden, and other mindless sequel games aren't worth mentioning because they are noise. It's like if you tried to make a list of the 100 best movies on the past 10 years. How many movies really worth watching come out in a decade's time?
And the 2 PSP titles: Lumines and the 4 or 5th appearance of GTA on the list. If 1/20th of your list is GTA (the same game every time with minor plot changes), you might as well start listing all the MegaMan games: same gameplay, minor story changes! At least Lumines (the other Tetsuya Mizugchi game, besides Rez) is worth having (although it's more worth having as a download onto a 1.5 PSP, since the PSP is pretty boring when it's not also able to be a NES emulator).

Internet Explorer (n): Another bug -- that is, a feature that can't be turned off -- in Windows.

1up.com can smoke my big fat cock.
FFS that list is for homosexuals.
he forgot Forza Motorsport, Steel Battalion, Phantom Dust, Rallisport Challenge, Jet Set Radio Future, Mechassault, Dead or Alive 3, Deathrow, Shenmue 2, and Full Spectrum Warrior. One could argue that that list is spread out across 3 distinct consoles. poor xbox indeed. but I suppose I'm just being rude.
disclaimer: I've been known to store numbers in my ass for which to dig out when quantities are required.
Not that anyone is obligated to care but...
:)
Ridge Racer: I know this game has a huge following but why does anyone even care in a world with Gran Turismo one through n? Ridge Racer has some of the worst physics I've seen since Out Run.
Wipeout: It's perfect to put this right next to ridge racer since these two games have the same stupid problem: hitting the wall (or in RR, the curb) at all makes you slam to a stop. They fixed this problem in Wipeout XL, and you can ride the walls very well by drifting. Incidentally, Wipeout on the Saturn is the same way. Very odd that Wipeout on PSX and Wipeout on Saturn have such different wall physics.
Raiden Project: I haven't played project, but IMO Raiden II is the best top-down shooter of all time, period.
Final Fantasy VII: Still my favorite RPG. I replay this one now and then.
Bushido Blade: Another game where you want to play the sequel, which is so much better it's ridiculous - but in this case, both games are timeless classics.
Tomb Raider whatever: Tomb II didn't do as much for me as the original, but I suspect this is just a matter of taste. Maybe it's just that the original was enough Tomb Raider for me.
I must be the only person on Terra who thinks the resident evil games are all lame.
Metal Gear Solid: The camera ruined this game for me. The game starts out too hard, too. (I may be a wuss since I said that, but on the other hand, I did beat the original NES game without a strategy guide.)
Gran Turismo and sequels: Best. Racing. Game. Ever. 'Nuff said.
Spyro: Lame control scheme, poor play control, great otherwise. I give this one a miss.
Xenogears: The first half of this game is super-badass. The second half is super-unfinished. Go play FFVII again instead.
Final Fantasy Tactics: Definitely one of the all-time greats. I prefer it on the GBA, though, in the form of FFT Advance. There's more going on in the PSX version but this is a game that begs to be portable.
R-Type Delta: I suck at R-Type. It's hard! More to the point, you have to memorize, which I think makes it kind of lame.
GTA3: Great game, but if you still haven't played it, skip it and play San Andreas instead. The ability to climb up things and swim makes it a no-brainer.
MGS2: Also too hard for me, but it was the first game in the long while to give me the sweaty-palmed jitters, and it's absolutely gorgeous. Play control is top-notch. Everyone should play it at least twice.
SSX Tricky: Best snowboarding game I've seen yet. Really smooth with an incredibly high frame rate, AND fun to play.
Need For Speed: There is no such thing as a NFS title with good physics. I just can't play the racing games with bad physics, perhaps because I like to drive, and have driven a wide array of different types of vehicles, and I keep expecting cars to do the right thing.
GTA Vice City: See above on GTA
Prince of Persia Sands of Time: Wins best gimmick award. Fun to play, except for that pesky camera.
GTA SA: Oh, there it is. Do we really need all these GTA games on the list?
And uh, that's all the games on the list that I've played. Guess I have to hand in my hardcore gamer badge.
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
100 items is a lot of items to list... This seems to be a list of pretty much every game for a Sony system that had any kind of significance to the industry. I consider myself to be pretty hardcore, but I'm not sure if I've even played that many PS* games. That being said, I was pleased to notice a couple of my own relativley obscure favorites on there like R-Type Delta and Persona II: Eternal Punishment, and I can see where they're coming from with most of the items on the list.
Conspicuously missing, IMHO, are Einhander (A solid 2D shooter by none other than Squaresoft; possibly the only sidescrolling shooter on the PS that can rival R-Type Delta) and Valkyrie Profile (A fairly unique experimental RPG from Enix- it does a lot of new things, and does enough of them right that it's worth a play).

I thought most gamers were already 'well rounded' from sitting down while playing the games.... with the exception being the DDR freaks :P

When the first thing you think of when you hear OPM is The Office of Personnel Management. Wow, those guys do gaming too? They probably pwn at Roller Coaster Tycoon.
But I bet they go home, play Splinter Cell, and secretly wish they worked for another three letter agency.
Keep your friends close.
Keep your enemies in a little jar on your desk.
But how many of those are ported from PC or have been ported to PC? I don't have an X-Box but I spot names of PC games easily.
I know Doom3, Splinter Cells, R6-3, and some other popular shooters were ported onto X-Box. The Halos, Fable, and Kotor (X-box came first but the PC version was made PC friendly and had some changes so not a pure port) were ports.
Since I don't play racing games and I'm not a huge fighting fan (only love Soul Calibur), I would like to know what X-Box only games I should be excited about that I didn't mention.
Tomba was a fantastic sidescrolling platformer! If they would just make a sequel for the next-gen or even current gen consoles, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Anyways, if sidescrolling platformers are your thing, get Tomba! In fact I might go find, and play through it again, just for nostalgia sake.... That and FFIV, and Syphon Filter (the original), and Crash Bandicoot... I could go all night.
