Shmups ("Shoot-Em-Ups") are my favorite genre of game:
My MAME recommendations mainly focus on cult shmup developer CAVE:
Dodonpachi (Manic Bullet Hell!) Progear No Arashi (Side Scroller with Laputa-inspired artwork) ESP.Ra.De (Psychic Teenagers!) Guwange (absolutely beautiful Medieval Japan setting) Dangun Feveron (Disco-themed space shooter!)
all of these games are hard but are in fact beatable in a single credit if you put in enough effort. Personally, I can usually only one-credit clear the first 3 to 5 stages before dying repeatedly.
As far as Raiden goes, you might also enjoy games from developer Psykio, such as:
one click away from your own link: "Payed, a nautical term that means "to let out a line or cable by slackening". Not to be confused with paid."
a sad irony about Red Devil Games' closure

The End of Indie Retail?
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
I was one of eric's loyal customers, even though there were two gamestops, two ebs, a target, and a toys r us and more 20 minutes closer to me.
There was a morning earlier this fall when I said to myself "I better e-mail eric and reserve Gunstar Super Heroes, Dragon Quest VIII and Final Fantasy IV (gba)." It turned out that that was the morning they announced their closure.
And if Eric's reading this: Congrats on the new baby daughter!
well, if you actually read the quote that you lifted from another website, you'd see that your counter example of the "human extinction movement" doesn't make ANY sense what-so-ever. A tongue-in-cheek philosophical/political organization of individuals has nothing to do with biology, nor does it have to do with a *species*, just individuals. Last I checked, there are millions of people having children...
and while the part you have bolded strikes me as strictly true but possibly ambigious, the more important bit is this "If it could be proved that any part of the structure of any one species had been formed for the exclusive good of another species, it would annihilate my theory..."
which, as far as I know, still stands to this day.
btw, unless you've actually read the entirety of Douglas Futuyma's Science on Trial, or at least tracked down your own copy to verify that he hasn't been misquoted, it's extremely poor form to quote the text without properly citing that you are quoting it second-hand. As far as you know, Futuyma might not even exist.
nice article, as I was reading it I was thinking of the indie game store I frequent in Red Bank, NJ
then I noticed it was written by the owner!
Excellent shop; when there's a game I know I want to buy on release day, I go out of my way (there are 5 gamestop affiliates and a target that are closer) to go to red devil to buy them.
Why?
Because I like the atmosphere, the sincerity, the well-informed staff, and most of all I like being treated like an individual customer and appreciate it when my tastes are taken into account when being recommended something.
I also like that the store holds game tournaments, even if I don't play Halo or Smash Brothers (which appear to be the most popular.)
Soul Calibur 1 and 2 are definitely great games but not games I enjoy a great deal; Tekken and DOA are nice to look at but fail to have balance and depth, at least compared to VF4evo's near perfection.
Why would you assume that I don't have an appreciation for other "real" art forms? I'm very fond of Matthew Barney
& Gerhard Richter, my taste in music includes serious 20th century composers such as Xenakis and Stockhausen, (and the avant garde in general from Merzbow to 12k records), a few of my best friends are architects or art historians, and one has been working at the Modern Museam of Art in NYC for the past 3 years.
When you make assumptions and generalizations about the cultural sophistication of gamers, the only insult is to your own intelligence.
I personally consider Silent Hill 2 to rise to the level of "art", when compared to well-regarded cinema of the 1970's. It's a depressing grim game where the actual gameplay would be painfully dull if not for the moving emotional context & story of the game, the absolutely incredible sound design, and very uncomfortable art direction.
Now, most games are (artistically) crap, but it doesn't mean that there aren't some gems.
Don't want to spoil the ending but it's the creepiest and most depressing game I've ever played because it flat out addresses the aftermath of a controversial "social issue."
Two of my all time favorite games mentioned in a positive light in the "paper of record". Wow!
Also, I'm a Library and Information Sciences graduate student and I'm working on a few projects related to video games. It's really exciting and challenging to present information and analysis of gaming in an academic context. I'm hoping to attend the conference at Princeton mentioned in this NY Times article.
Tell that to SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment of America)
They just rejected Metal Slug 3 for release in America on the PS2. The port is absolutely perfect (I've played the import.)
This leaves me extremely pissed off, because a big reason I bought my PS2 was for the eventual release of Metal Slug 3.
However, SNK Playmore are releasing Metal Slug 3 in May in the USA for the Xbox. Perhaps they will even go Xbox exclusive. That'd be enough for me to buy an Xbox and a compatable arcade stick...
UH, yes you did, your post implies that the people in parliment said the opposite of what they did say. The members of parliment are PRO-VIVISECTION, not against it.
Your post makes no sense what so ever in that context, and everyone who modded you up didn't even read the article...
You have totally missed the point. The representatives are worried about this from the OTHER side of the argument. "Animal Liberation" is such a big deal in the UK that it's extremely expensive to carry out any animal testing.
The complaint is that the game paints animal experimentation in a bad light, not that the game glorifies it.
I agree with you that in principle people should not use pirated software, but you and I both know that many people do. My comment was not intended as condoning piracy so much as condeming the idiocy of not releasing a demo.
actually, I just listened to part of the comentary track on the new Aliens special edition dvd, and Cameron mentions that there is a body builder in the "suit" behind sigorny weaver, helping her move the plastic arms and feet. She was basically standing on his feet.
there is more to it than that, including some kind of rig behind it helping to support it all.
R-Type Final is coming out in the USA early 2004, $30 new, for PS2. The graphics are beautiful and the game is a hardcore R-Type style game, so if you love R-Type, you'll love it.
Gradius V is also coming out early 2004. Co-developed by Treasure and Konami. I'm nearly peeing myself with excitement.
im sorry but a sidescroller doesnt impress me, this game couldve been done on gba play beyond good and evil for something other than a button masher I was never told everything ever said everywhere had to be insightful
uh... Viewtiful Joe could NOT have been done on the GBA. It probably couldn't have been done on the PS2. The graphics engine is pretty intense, and with it's deep, expressive controls, Viewtiful Joe is far from being a button masher. It took a lot skillful play for me to beat the game on the Adult difficulty mode.
Also, I have heard nothing but very good things about Beyond Good And Evil, I plan on checking it out.
uh, yeah, a three word blanket dismissal of one of the best rated games of the year gets modded "insightful."
Viewtiful Joe is among the best games I've played this year, for any system, from any year. And just for perspective, I also beat games like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and Gunstar Heroes this year.
The controls are tight and intuitive, the challenge is incredible, the story is entertaining and very amusing. The graphic design is consistent and unique. There are great extras that extend the replay value.
It also manages to bridge the gap between classic old school gaming and the tricks availible to current developers.
Overall, it's a very solid game worthy of your time.
I love the Parodius series! They do tend to be brutally hard however.

Also, Batsugun from Toaplan is quite fun.
and side scrollers:
GRADIUS (1 through 4)
R-Type 2
Pulstar
Blazing Star
if you own a Gamecube or Dreamcast, you should play Ikaruga. There are another half dozen or so excellent shooters on the Dreamcast.

"No member of any species will act for the benefit of another with no benefit for its own" is falsified by the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement.
uh, that's not even evolutionary theory to begin with...
yeah, because, you know, Christians are a really underrepresented and repressed religious minority...
(at least here in the USA, where it would be inconcievable that a born again Christian could be elected president... twice.)
I will point you at the page for Takashi Miike:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586281/
Directed 7 films in 2001, including 3 of his best recieved works: Ichi The Killer, Happiness of the Katakuris, and Visitor Q.
It's quite possible to be a prolific director and still be making good sincere expressive cinema. It is also very difficult and rarely the case.
Not that I've seen or even have any interest in seeing all 65 films he's directed... but the 8 or so that I have seen are all excellent.

GT3 is Gran Turismo 3, not Grand Theft Auto 3.
i do believe you forgot to mention Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, which is easily (imho) the greatest fighting game of all time...
93.5% rating on Gamerankings.com as seen here.

The entirety of the problem here is that there is NO demo, and that 99% of shops refuse to accept returns on opened software.
So, with no demo and really bad word of mouth that suggests the game demands a dual G5 to play decently, what do you expect people to do?
I bet 90% of the people who downloaded the game just trashed it after finding out how badly it runs on their systems.
.
