PS3 Showing At Taipei Game Show

Gamespot reports that Sony will be devoting a quarter of its booth to the PS3 at next week's Taipei game show. The question is, will there be anything new? From the article: "It hasn't been disclosed whether Sony is planning something similar [to 2005's E3] with the Taipei Game Show, or if the console will finally appear in a playable form. Sony's appearance at 'the other TGS' comes just one month before Microsoft launches its Xbox 360 in Taiwan on March 16."

The exact date is the only thing that no one outside of Sony knows about. Just google around and you will see that Sony has been talking about a spring 2006 release for the ps3 for years. Just a day or two ago there was an article interviewing some sony exec called "sony reiterates sping 2006 ps3 release again" or something like that.

I don't know about public statements, but developers have known at least the PS3 was going to be a 2006 release going all the way back to the early days of the PS2.

Sony never specifically stated back then 2006, but from their statements to us about PS2 lifetime and other non-direct ways it was obvious they were talking about 2006.

We knew about Spring 2006 for at least two years now. Maybe even a little longer.

There seem to be a couple articles by analysts that have given the impression that Sony has changed the release schedule around. One where someone talked about how badly the Microsoft was doing and how Sony might release in 2007 because of that fact. Complete rubbish, Microsoft is essentially irrelevant to Sony's PS3 plans. And a second article wondering out loud if Sony might release in late 2005. What a gigantic holiday sales season the PS2 had should make it clear why Sony had no intention of releasing in 2005.

If you listen to interviews with Sony execs you can hear their irritation about the release schedule for the PS3 because they keep having to repeat themselves.

This hasn't been a problem for the existing PlayStation 2 for quite some time -- it has USB ports, and quite readily supports USB mice and keyboards.

Where the problem comes in is that not all games support them as input -- indeed, very few do. This makes sense in some areas, as many PS2 games are designed with PS2 input in mind. Games ported from the PC world to the PS2 however generally do benefit from keyboard/mouse input, and this is where games which don't support them for input are a real PITA.

So the current PlayStation 2 doesn't have any hardware limitations that make this impossible -- it's been possible since day 1, and I've had a mouse and keyboard attached to my PS2 for several years now. What is needed is more users with such a set-up, to put pressure on game developers to ensure such input options are viable in more games (where it makes sense to do so).
