Microsoft is the most successful example of the type of company where it's not enough to make a lot of money, but you also have to stop other people from making money. To them life is choking off other people's air supply.

  6. Re:Tranquility base on Computer Analysis Sets NASA History Straight · · Score: 1

Most space nerds would argue that the first words were "Contact light", closely followed by "Main engine stop".

It does not necessarily violate conservation of momentum. Remember, photons have momentum. Light radiating from the sun exerts a small amount of force when it hits something. Careful with the claims of scientific illiteracy.

  8. Will there be psych testing? on Volunteer for the Mars Station's Dry Run · · Score: 1

Experience with long durations of isolation (e.g. in Antartica and on old Soviet space missions) showed that the ability of the crew to get along with each other (and in some cases not go downright nuts) is a major factor. And normally it's completely overlooked...

  9. Total nonsense ignoring real world constraints on NPR Looks to Technological Singularity · · Score: 1

This is all a naive exponential extropolation of current trends. Where will the energy come from to do all this work? How will the curve continue upwards while people still need to sleep? The actual future involves energy depletion and a reversal of technology. The sooner we admit it and face up to the coming difficulties the better.

  20. The Singularity ignores energy requirements on Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity is Near" · · Score: 1

All physical processes require energy. If you're going to ramp something up an exponential curve then you'll need an exponential energy supply. Not going to happen. This is a classic example of a smart person taking a line of reasoning too far without considering basic physical constraints. It's sad, really.
