20 Titles At Revolution Launch

Next Generation reports that NOA's George Harrison expects there to be 20 titles for the system at the Revolution launch. From the article: "The other thing we recognized is that you really make your reputation in the first year ... You've got to deliver software, not just at launch, but you've got to deliver software in the first six to nine months after launch. It has to be solid software. In GameCube, we didn't have that, we had kind of a drought for six months after it launched. By that time your reputation starts to solidify and it's hard to reverse that after awhile."

But it's quality, not quantity. The XBox 360 had about 26 titles or something, but most of them were ports and crappy generic EA sports games. That won't cut it on the Revolution, especially because I don't think Nintendo has that much of the sports games fan market. We will have to wait to see how many of these 20 titles are "for real" and how many are, shovelware.

You know that Katamari Damacy was created by Namco, and has only graced Sony platforms, and that neither of these entities is in any way Nintendo, right?

      Well said.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, nobody's forcing anyone to buy those crappy games that come out alongside or in between the good ones.

For example, I'd dare say the PS2 has more "excellent" games than the XBox. Not just more games (that's indisputable) but more "excellent" rated games (according to actual players). Besides, I love that I can find the niche games I enjoy for the PS2 and my friends can play their sports games on their PS2s and we're both happy.

If you like the games available on another platform, enjoy them. However, a huge library with a lot of variety is an excellent goal -- especially since console makers make most of their money from the licensing, not the console itself.

I think there's at least 20 games still on my "definately want to play" list for the PS2 that I haven't got to yet.

      1. Only "one third" (seven) will by made by Nintendo. RTFA.
      2. You listed Mario RPG twice, though you're actually accurate since there are two such franchises: Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. Both franchises have a spotless record.
      3. It's "Wario World", and there's only been one. And while it was good (for a rental), it certainly sucked compared to most Treasure developed games.
      4. Almost every (real) franchise you listed has been critically acclaimed at one point or another, and some of them (Zelda, Mario, Mario Golf/Tennis, Metriod (sic) Prime) are totally outstanding. Well apparently some people didn't like Sunshine, but I'm still listing Mario platformers as having an outstanding record.
      5. To imply that the Revo is going to be the only console that will have sequels is pretty questionable.

My bets for the 7 launch "window" titles are: Smash, Mario 128, Pennant Chase Baseball, WarioWare (fingers crossed), Metroid Prime 3, hmmmm. Can't guess the other two. But they'll be delayed anyways ;). And I'm hoping for Mario Party 8 as one of the 20. It wouldn't be one of the 7 because Nintendo doesn't make it.

Actually, with the Revo's motion sensitive controller I feel it would be perfect for sports games. A baseball game where you swing the bat rather than press a button would be tremendously fun. A football game where you pass by making an overhand throwing motion towards the intended reciever would be much more interesting than pressing a button. A basketball game where you shoot by... well, you get the idea.

This means about 20 developers thought "Hmm... that's a cool controller. Wouldn't it be cool if you could use it to swing a sword... or something."

    The games are:

    • Sword Fight
    • Sword Fight 2
    • Flying Swords
    • Zelda: Sword Fight
    • Mario: Sword Jump Super Sword!!!
    • ...

Quantity doesn't mean variety, though. For example, let's say a system gets five Madden NFL Football games. This is definitely at least some quantity. But it isn't any variety at all.

On the other hand, a game library with 20 titles but no variety... well, I don't know what we can say about how much quantity it has, but regardless of the quality of the individual games, that isn't what I'd call a quality launch library. Variety effects quality directly, because most people get bored if they wind up having to play the exact same kind of game over and over.

And you can't possibly say quality over quantity "[made] the post-SNES game libraries suck so hard", because quality over quantity is absolutely not something that describes the Playstation 2 game library at all...

    Hey,

I snaked this list off a power point presentation given at a recent conference to investors of the Big N. For just a few seconds we got a look at the long list but they flipped to the next slide to discuss all of the different colors the Revolution would be released in and spent about thirty minutes discussing that. Really odd, I thought.

Anyway, after the presentation I went up to the machine hosting the presentation and move it onto my USB jump drive. Here is the list of the 20 awesome release games for the REvolution that will surely make it the greatest launch EVER:

    Mario Kart: Revolution!
    Mario Baseball: Revolution!
    Mario Tennis: Revolution!
    Mario Soccer: Revolution!
    Mario Golf: Revolution!
    Super Mario Strikers: Revolution!
    Mario Golf: Revolution!
    Mario Party 7: Revolution!
Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix 2: Revolution!
    Mario Beach Volleyball: Revolution!
Mario Versus Capcom Versus SNK: Revolution!
    Paper Mario: Revolution!
    Sunshine Mario: Revolution!
    Paper Sunshine Mario: Revolution!
    Mario Classic Arcade: Revolution!
    Wario Wrestling: Revolution!
    Mario En Espana: Revolutiones!
    Mario Bowling: Revolution!
    Mario World: Revolution!

I cannot wait for revolution to come out. With a launch lineup like this they are going to annihilate the competition!
