Super Smash Brothers Wii, Featuring Solid Snake
mcc writes "In a surprise news conference this evening, Nintendo unexpectedly revealed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, and released a promo video of the title. Smash Bros. Brawl will feature online play; a Nintendog item that blocks your view of the playfield by jumping up on the screen and demanding to be petted; bizarre Dragonball Z style superattacks; your choice of traditional Gamecube or motion-sensing Revmote control; and new characters in the form of Samus (without the suit), Meta Knight, Kid Icarus (!), and... Konami's Solid Snake, complete with a cardboard box he hides in. The only bad news is despite earlier reports it would be a launch title, Smash Bros. Brawl will not be out until 2007."

Maybe I'm just jealous. I want to vote for Bub & Bob (Bubble Bobble) as a counter pair to fight those damned Ice Climbers!

That doesn't seem to be true from what I can see. The following is taken from the article at IGN.

Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.
"We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been," said Sakurai. "The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."

Metal Gear has never been a exclusive title. It got it's start on Computers/NES. While it did the Square thing for a bit, the Game Cube has a Metal Gear Solid 2 remake on it called Twin Snakes. Interesting enough, its MSG's own creator who begged to be in SSB. He wanted to be in SSB melee but it was too late to bring Snake on board.

They have followed the same path over the past two decades
Nintendo's not a 20-30 year old company like Apple.
Nintendo's a one hundred and sixteen -year old company.
Nintendo has always made sure to expand its market to ensure that it's not ever in any danger. They own the Seattle Mariners, branched out into the taxi business as well as sex hotels and vacuum manufacturing.
Video games really made them a household name, but Nintendo has always been worried about being tied to a too-small portion of the populace. Then again, you don't get to be a 116 year old company without that worry.
I guess I can see it going either way, but I really wish Konami/Kojima could show Nintendo some more love (since that's where he got his start) Not to be pendantic, but the MSX version of Metal Gear (that came out a year before the NES version) is considered to be the preferred version.
Funny, am I the only one who remembers the price on a NES dropping after Nintendo was hammered (antitrust?) for its price fixing practices?
/thinks Apple hardware is fairly priced, too //except maybe iPods ///considering Wii to replace aging N64
Maybe Nintendo doesn't over charge right this moment, but I'd bet good money that if they found themselves in Apple's shoes (popular boutique product recognized as the "BMW" of its niche), they'd charge a premium too. Remember that Nintendo is the underdog in the US market right now--they're probably willing to narrow their margins in order to win back the very mindshare that you are demonstrating, not to mention market share.
