Another Apple Special Event Coming Soon

Sabathius writes "Hard on the heels of the last 'Special Event,' Mac Rumors reports that Apple will make another announcement on the 25th of September just one day before Photokina, a world-wide a photography/imaging gathering in Germany. There are rumors of a new version of Aperture (based on the lens image on the invitation matching the one on the Aperture box), as well as the possibility of a MacBook Pro update."

It seems unlikely. They just released a bunch of new iPods this week, and in conjunction with a video event (selling movies online). It would look like "Hey, we had one more thing but we couldn't get the demo ready in time."

Given that we are talking about a big trade show for photography professionals, I'd say that it is potentially a special event for those at the trade show.

When I've been paying attention, when there is a major trade show going on, is when Apple announces some software closely related to the trade show's target industry, and hardware announced to support that software, though the hardware has more broad appeal. NAB2005, Final Cut Studio, Universal + 17" Mac Book Pro Core Duo notebook, actually, most Final Cut updates are announced at NAB. The next minor update announced at IBC2006 is possibly the lone exception for Final Cut updates in a long time, but I suppose the iMac updates pair up with that nicely. The photography show where Aperture was announced also had the Power Mac G5 Quad / dual core PowerMacs and updated PowerBooks.

This event is the biggest event for the professional photographer trade. Maybe Apple have some big plans for Aperture but there are other possibilities. Apple have moved towards including iSight cameras as standard on most of their computers but the resolution is not that high. Not high enough to be used as an alternative to a scanner for OCRing text documents.

For many people this would be a killer app especially with Apples knack for making it simple and intuitive. I know there are already ways of doing this but they're less well known.

scanners are dead.

I use my 8MP camera. it even has a document mode. and it takes less time to photo and upload than just for a scanner to warm up.

I can't see why anyone would buy a scanner any more unless it was a multi-thousand dollar model with all kinds of fancy auto-feed duplex-scan with built-in OCR and photocopy functions.

updated conclusion: home-use scanners are dead.

Your 8MP camera does not come close to the resolution of a decent home scanner.

Any HP Office-jet comes with auto-feed duplex scanning, and built-in OCR, photocopy, and faxing.

I just bought an Office-jet 5610 for $119

That's why ;-)

Plus, getting the camera to line up is not where as easy as getting the scanner to line up.

Why would I want to have to take the time to ever so carefully position the camera directly purpendicular to the page and then edit the photo afterwards to remove the skew that would inevitably show up anyway, when I could just stick the page on a flat glass plate and hit "Scan"?

What do you mean? It's less of a hassle, because the scanner is already attached to the computer, and all you have to do is stick the paper in and hit "scan." And if you hadn't noticed, scanners have been really cheap for a long time now.

Now, if you're talking about having some kind of nomadic lifestyle, then yeah, your situation is different. But that just means you're weird!

Hope Apature is Far Improved

I, for one, really hope Apature is far improved from the original version. I have a friend who is a senior photojournalist for Time Magazine - one of the first at the magazine to use digital photography, back in the old $2000-for-three-megapixel days. He was very interested in Apature until he saw what an utter piece of junk the software was. With Apple re-organizing the development effort, one can hope they've really learned from their mistakes, and make something worth buying here.

I for one am a huge fan of Apple software, and there's little that dissapoints me more than something like that. Good luck guys!

Look, say what you will, but Apple is trying new things, and they're moving very swiftly. Whether they'll be showing off some new photo software, or what, Apple has been doing a great job lately of pushing out software that works and updating it very rapidly. I hope they show off Final Cut Pro 6, a new version of Aperture, or a new piece of software, who knows, but they're pushing, and pushing hard enough that I think the rest of the industry (competition, mostly) is having trouble keeping up.

Tell your "friend" that if he's got such an issue with something Apple's released, "he" can always help make it better reporting bugs, features, etc instead of griping about it ad hominem on some public forum on the internet.

I love how "ad hominem" is now a synonym for "any attack I feel is baseless." I did not mention the professional by name because it could be detrimental to his career. You can choose to believe me (I have known this person for the last 6 years), or you can choose to think I am full of it. To be honest, I do not really care. All I do care about, as far as this story is concerned, is that Apple releases a product that I won't be embarassed by.

I worked on special effects for an IMAX film (yes, I do have an IMDB entry for that) and we found some very... interesting bugs in Final Cut. Let's just say that Apple's Pro software is nowhere near as polished as their OS, etc. Doesn't play well with NFS, for one thing.

The individuals "gripes" were adequately addressed my the community at large. I very much enjoy Apple and its products (I've had a Mac since the classic in '91), however I do believe you would benefit from reading the Wikipedia articleon Ad Hominem attacks as you seem rather confused. At least you didn't post AC.

The article blurb already sums up EVERYTHING that is known about this coming event. It coincides with a professional photography conference. The invite is a close-up of Aperture's logo. Aperture obviously matters a lot to that crowd, not so much to other people.

ThinkSecret doesn't have any more info about it than that. TUAW doesn't have any more info about it than that. MacRumors and MacOSRumors don't have any more info about it than that. Most likely there *is* no more info about it than that.

Aperture update, and maybe the new MBP too. End of story. Next time, how about waiting until there's actually something worth discussing, mmmkay?

I've been looking in to it and I've found some remarkable information that might be interesting here.

Apple has been trying to find a way to shoe the Core 2 Duo into a MacBook and, frankly, it's not working out. The chip just uses too much power and generates too much heat.

So, don't expect an upgraded MBP this year. Instead, look for an amazing announcement next August at the WWDC. Jobs is going to announce a remarkable new development - the entire Apple line is switching to Sparc. They've been talking to Jonathan Schwartz, and he's sold them on the next generation of multiple core Sparcs, the successor to Niagara, codenamed "Viagra." For the last eight years, Mac OS X has been living an amazing, hitherto secret, triple life, running on PowerPC, Intel, and Sparc architectures.

When the 64 bit version of that'll not fit in a laptop, they'll announce a switch to MIPS in 2009, and a switch to ARM in 2011.

i ordered a macbook on sep 5th. "ships in 5-7 business days it said". yesterday i called to see what's up. they upgraded my shipping to 2 day. thanks apple! then today i get this email:

Apple has failed to ship your product on time, and has rescheduled the delivery date a couple weeks further into the future (meanwhile apple.com still shows your new laptop will ship tomorrow if you order now), and your reaction is "it seems a little too good to be true". So you actually think that a manufacturing delay is going to translate into Apple giving you a free upgrade to a better processor that they haven't even released yet? Don't you think it's more likely that if core 2 duo is iminent, they're going to kick your crappy ass box out the door as soon as possible so they don't get stuck with the outdaded hardware? We're talking about a for profit business here people, wake up.

Absolutely. Apple is notorious for dropping production early and shipping the new product to the people who had ordered the old one, for the same price. It's a win-win situation: they get to avoid being stuck with a load of old product on hand, and the customer gets a better system than they expected.

It's been nine years since Apple has produced a digital still camera, but Apple was an early innovator in the field (even if other companies, like Kodak, did the manufacturing). Rather than hope for new notebooks or the mythical "widescreen iPod", I'm going to hope that Apple is getting back into the digital still camera market. Perhaps the secret to Apeture's success could be getting people to use a digital camera that extends the desktop workflow into the camera?

Here and there Cringely predicted Apple branded LCD TVs. He got the other details right. The TVs don't fit with the photog theme, so if it happens, I think that it will be the next special event between now and Xmas.
