Google to Hold Worldwide Developer Day

Incon writes "Google is holding a day for developers to meet and learn from Google staff at its various worldwide offices. Places at the event are sure to go quicker than hotcakes, so get in quickly. Locations that Developer Day will be held at are: Beijing, Hamburg, London, Madrid, Moscow, Paris, Sao Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo and of course at Google HQ in Mountain View."

      There's nothing mentioned for the New York city offices on the official Google Deverloper Day website.

      Language differences are more important than geographical ones. And I count 5 in Europe, not 3.

      It's ever-so-slightly easier to travel from London to Paris than from NYC to Mountain View, so why not axe one of those locations and add another in the US? Well, maybe you haven't learned this in school yet, but they speak different languages in London and Paris. It may be easier to travel between those two cities, but it's not easier to go to a conference in one of those cities and get anything out of it if you're from the other city.

      Well, I don't think they have anything against NYC, but I expect it makes more sense to put all their eggheads in one basket.

      If a Google employee in NYC is working on something the tech world needs to see, they can fly him to Mountain View where he'll get more exposure, and can meet with his other Google colleagues. They'll get a lot more drop-in visitors in Mountain View than they will in NYC -- at least of the type they're looking for.

      In every other case there are geographic or language barriers to people served by that city visiting a different city. Anybody in the Northeast US can get to MV pretty easily if it matters enough to them.

      They speak the same language in London as in Mountain View, what's your point? It's pretty hard to go to Mountain View (or London) for somebody living on the East Coast.

      Are you a retard? Try coming to where I live (Western France). "All but the oldest generation" might be able to give you directions on the street, but they won't be able to understand complex topics.

      Computer developers probably have a good reading knowledge of computer-related English, but that doesn't mean they'd be able to understand a conference given in real-time.

    I thought it was going to be a day when people were supposed to bring me flowers and cards, or take me out to lunch and things like that.

    But it turns out to be educational stuff that's supposed to be good for me. I'm sure Google means well, but I already know enough to be dangerous. People should put more effort into appeasing me and less into pouring oil on that particular fire.

    What do they expect people to learn from Google? Any company with their heads on straight won't be giving away trade secrets, and even tips and tricks on how to develop software are either already known or it's something that Google has an edge on and doesn't want to lose. It's not like Google has any "secret knowledge" or anything like that. They just made a great business plan and it payed off.

      Its mainly about developing using Google's APIs. KML, AJAX, Atom, that sort of thing. Sure, the tips and tricks are already known, but its still useful to have an intensive session where they are presented to you by the people involved in their creation, rather than spending untold hours filtering through the crap on online forums to find the useful tips.

    Not really, but... come on, one event in the entire US, compared to three in Europe within 1000 km of each other? We don't even get one on each coast?

      Those 3 in Europe are in coutries which speak different languages. How would you like your only option to be the one in Madrid? Think you'd get anything out of it?

      Fortunately, Google verifies that their developers speak at least 3 languages as part of their legendary interview process just for situations like this.

      Well...

      We may get them in many places, but at least some of them have nothing to do with development.

      For example let's take London - there is a nice round zero worth of development there. If you want to work as a developer for Google you have to agree to relocating to Dublin (or in more rare cases Mountain View) as a preliminary condition before any further conversations have happened.

      So Google is not hating anyone. It is just doing Google recruitment. Featured on el-Reg and many other internet news sites. Makes quite a laugh reading about it.

      Fortunately you'll have a hard time finding someone in Europa that is monolingual. So it wouldn't be that much of a problem as you claim. "ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE."

      Considering the amount of staff they've hired recently in Kirkland, WA, and the fact that we have a huge and healthy tech industry I'd expect a Seattle (or western-Washington) event. Very disappointing.

      Look at it the other way: The Mountain View office is really cool. They've got 14 different cafeterias, all serving great food. plus a number of other nice features.

      If you want to visit a nice working environment for computer geeks, this is the one :)

      You make it sound like you need a reason to hate America!?

      Joking aside: Please notice that "Yourup" (thanks a lot Mr Bush!) is not a single country. It is lots of different countries, with separate identities and (mostly) with their own languages.

      A european country in europe does NOT compare to a state in the US - such a comparison shows ignorance and is borderline offensive.

      For example there is not a "european" language, which makes for fun and games for all sorts of meetings and conferences: Ever tried to have a bi-lingual conference? Tri-lingual? Good luck...

      Which hemisphere are they missing? I see China, America, and Europe in the list, so that covers the east/west divide, and Sydney covers the north/south divide. I guess developers in central Africa and Antarctica will have to wait until next year.

    What are they doing in all those other offices around the globe? Developing? I thought they were sales offices, put into life to serve the local advertisement market better. Maybe some people for translations and such, but that's it.
