So then, what's the advantage if you don't have any security problems with Windows? The joy of figuring out how to use a computer all over again? The excitement of finding shoddy knock-offs of the programs that you're used to on the Windows side? The thrill of having to hire very expensive admins to handle stuff that anybody can do in Windows? With each Windows release, Linux seems more and more pointless.

Linux is about as easy to use for new users as a helicopter is to operate. I'm using Ubuntu at work atm and I am a long-time Windows user. I hate having to do things through the terminal and VI is horrible compared to the advanced GUI editors I am used to. Linux still has a long ways to go before it is easy enough to use for the masses (ie you don't have to memorize a lot of crap or mess around in a terminal to do anything). Ubuntu is a step forward though, I've seen older Linux iterations that make me want to cry :O.

I am a WFM Analyst and work at one of the IBM's BPO unit in Manila.
I installed Ubuntu on laptop and it was good to fiddle around. It's not scary. But I couldn't connect to internet.
I just didn't know what to do. Even though I have been a C/JAVA programmer and understand the jargon and nuances, I just couldnt figure it out. I gave up.
Walk into a bar, assholes! And ask people if they know what Ubuntu is? It's not ready yet. Don't even compare.
Get out of your world and see other people who don't find Linux a better alternative and Windows repulsive. But then, why should I say that here. I've been reading Slashdot for years now, I know it's better to just shut up and let people go on and on...

I'm a big user of Linux.
But... I must admit, to some extent it SUCKS. And, the user community sucks, too.
I have a Toshiba laptop, with an Atheros wireless that isn't supported by Ubuntu (or linux in general, I'm not sure). I have a desktop pc that I built (Intel 945g motherboard), and the DAMN SOUND DOESN'T WORK.
I also had the fun experience of trying to get a widescreen to work, but it WOULDN'T.
Now, you might say "oh, you didn't try hard enough, or you didn't compile sdflkjfd from apt get and so forth", but WHY SHOULD I? I would ask the community for help, and their response is, oh you need to compile a driver yourself. WTF? Ok, so how do I do that, and NO RESPONSE.
It seems like linux gurus are all about being high and mighty, and wanting Linux to be mainstream, but when someone like me who knows a lot about computers (but not Linux) can't apt-get a driver and recompile the Kernel, they don't want to help.
I've given up asking the "community" for help, and if I can't get something working out-of-the-box, what good is it?
