Sony Announces New Exclusive Rockstar Title

The official PlayStation blog has the word that Rockstar is gifting Sony with a brand-new franchise. Gift is probably the wrong word; I'm sure it cost a pretty penny to obtain those exclusivity rights. Just the same, as Gamespot notes, this is a good sign for a company that's lost a number of fish to Microsoft over the last year: "Recently, more and more titles which were previously thought to be exclusive to one console or another have been announced as multiplatform, including Assassin's Creed, Fatal Inertia, and Devil May Cry 4. Some media speculation stated that former Sony chief Ken Kutaragi's 'slowness' in tying up the red tape of the deals had led to Sony losing exclusives for the PS3." No word on what the game is, other than it is not L.A. Noire.

It is good to hear that Rockstar is working on a real next gen game that isn't going to be gimped by the crappy/weak 360 hardware. Microsoft could have gone with a real next gen storage format like BluRay but they had to be whiny bitches over their VC1 codec that no one uses any more now that HD-DVD is dead.

It shouldn't surprise anyone why GTAIV has turned out so crappy looking. Rockstar was forced to fit the game on a 1gig smaller disc size compared to last gen. Amazing and pathetic.

    Last gen it was:

PS2 with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer
Xbox with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer

    This it is:

PS3 with 50 gigs of BluRay storage - 25 gigs per layer
360 with 7 gigs of BluRay storage - 3.5 gigs per layer

You have to feel for the Rockstar developers who are forced to work on the gimped 360 hardware. They can't even rely on a standard harddrive on the 360.

Sucks if you are a GTA fan to have your favorite game ruined by Microsoft's crappy hardware but it hilarious if you think about the sequence of events:

    * Microsoft rush crappy and gimped 360 hardware out the door - no standard harddrive, 1 gig smaller storage compared to last gen

    * Microsoft pays 50 million dollars to Rockstar so 360 owners have to buy extra missions that could have just been on the disc if Microsoft had a real next gen storage format

    * GTA is gimped by the sucky 360 hardware making it a nightmare for Rockstar to deal with

    * Rockstar take's Microsoft's money and uses it to create a real next gen game for Sony's PS3

    Thanks Microsoft!

Aw, poor Sony fanboy, feeling bad about already losing the console war in less than a year?

PS2 with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer
Xbox with 8 gigs of DVD storage - 4 gigs per layer

      This it is:

PS3 with 50 gigs of BluRay storage - 25 gigs per layer
360 with 7 gigs of BluRay storage - 3.5 gigs per layer Ignoring the fact that you're completely wrong on the Xbox 360 specs (the Xbox 360 doesn't use BluRay), you forgot to mention that the Xbox 360 drive is a 12X drive and the PS3 drive is a 2X drive.

Now I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a faster loading game than a game loaded with HD cinimatics.

      There's also this:

      Xbox 360 + PS2: $400 + $120 = $520: Full PS2/PS1 compatibility, largest next-gen game library
      PS3: $600: Incomplete PS2/PS1 compatibility, smallest next-gen game library

So for $80 more, I get a console with less compatibility and fewer games. Why would I want to do that?

"I've never heard any mention of the discs being smaller than the old DVDs"

      Welcome to Earth!

Xbox 360 DVD discs can't use around a gig or so you end up with something like only ~7 gigs of space that is usable by developers while a standard DVD is a little over 8 gigs IIRC.

That comes out to about 3.5 gigs per DVD layer on the 360. That is why Rockstar has been complaining so loudly about the 360. For free roaming games like GTA you are effectively constrained to just one layer because it is too costly to keep going back and forth across DVD layers.

3.5 gigs is a shockingly small amount of storage in 2007. Even Id's new game was using 20 gigs worth of just texture data in their recent demo.

The 360's drive is a standard, and noisy as a jet engine, 12X DL DVD drive. The gig or gig and a half less storage is some sort of DRM or security system for the 360 that ends up leaving around 7 gigs of space for developers to use.

      google 360 dvd 7 gigs

It is amazing that the 360 is the first console ever to ship with a smaller than previous gen storage solution.

They earned it by making a real next gen system that developers like Rockstar want to work on.

Next gen graphics system - 1080p support easily on the PS3
Standard harddrive on all PS3 models
Next gen storage format - 25 or 50 gigs of storage space
Free online with dedicated servers and the amazing Home online world

No wonder you hear developers absolutely fawning over doing PS3 development and nothing but cries of pain from developers forced to work on the 360.

It's pretty much guaranteed that any Sony post, you're going to post a ringing endorsement of Sony, with zero criticism ever on your part. You're one of the four or so slashdot users that I recognize the handle/nick of immediately because of your posting style and history: Every time there's news about Sony you harp on how great the PS3 is, or how much better BluRay is than HD, and your post history also contains you posting negatively to 360 related discussions. Sometimes you say things in an outlandish, flamebait way.

Personally, I don't think you're an astroturfer. Just pointing out why some might think that. It's more your presentation than you liking Sony (oh, but defending the RIAA a while ago was a bad idea -- especially since they're trying to collect royalties for non-RIAA artists through their new internet royalties rules). And note that yes, there are people accused of being astroturfers for other companies. I was accused of being one for Nintendo back before the two systems launched because I was excited about the motion control possibilities. But still, any time I see a Sony post, your handle comes to mind.
