Listen Online To Last HOPE Conference

Radio Statler! writes "This weekend marks 2600's last Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) conference at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. For those of you that can't make it this weekend, Radio Statler! will be streaming live from the event the whole weekend. There will be simulcasted talks, interviews with speakers and important guests, and music 24 hours a day for the duration of the con. Listeners can request music or submit questions by phone or IRC." The conference schedule (PDF) is available if you're curious about a particular seminar, though not all of them will be broadcast. CNet will be running some related stories about presentations from the conference. So far, they've written about a hacking how-to presentation. We briefly discussed the seventh and final HOPE conference last month.

Wow, when new2_60605 realizes you can't make a living being pissed at random people you've never met, he's going to be PISSED! Anyway, let's destroy his little fantasy world argument:

-Emanuel Goldstein is self-righteous because he has decided that real security is better than the illusion of security. Not the other way 'round. He just can't yell about that all day. It would make for bad radio/magazine/allkindsofthings.

-2600 doesn't edit its content for anything but the occasional spelling or grammar mistake - I know several contributors, and not a single one has ever had an article declined or edited for content.

-"Look up Indiana State Police v. PRM". I did. I found no such case. If you can find it, please provide a link to a reputable source (p.s. it's editor IN chief).

-"Most of the stuff you can find in there is online for free now" Yeah? Well, I happen to have some copies of 2600 right here. Let's see if I can find any of this awesome shit online:

"Exploring RoadRunner's Internal Network" - no results other than the table of contents at 2600.net

"Hacking with LD_PRELOAD" - I've got some results for hacking LD_PRELOAD implementations, but none for doing anything like what is described in the article. Sidenote: If this wasn't in 2600, I'd have no idea you could even do that and would never have thought to look.

"Capturing Botnet Malware Using a Honeypot" - A veritable smorgasbord! Amazing. Alright, I'm going to go read some of this. I'll leave this tab open and get back to you.

OK, back. It's been like 3 hours. I got stuck in one of those wikipedia-esque things where you click a bunch of links to open in new tabs, and then a bunch of links from each tab... just a mess, really. I still don't know shit about capturing botnet malware using a honeypot. You know why? Because on the internet, there are two kinds of people: those that know how to capture malware with a honeypot, and those that are willing to teach people things. I'm going to read the 2600 article now.

Back. It's been 12 minutes (hurf durf slowreader). I think I could probably manage to set up a honeypot - maybe not a perfect one, mind you, but I could do it. The article was clear, concise, and above all, COMPLETE. You don't get that on the internet. L0j1k's article was basically "Get tools A, B, C. Do X. Wait for botnet infection. Do Y. Now you have a bot, let's see what you can expect to see: M, N, O, P, and Q. Let's examine these with tools D, E, F. See? Great. In the future, try G, H, I, and J."

THAT IS HOW YOU WRITE AN ARTICLE.

Online, to learn the same techniques as L0j1k's article describes, you'd have to learn tools A, B, C, D, E, and F individually, probably from poorly-written forum posts and impenetrable user manuals. You'd be on your own trying to make sense of a bot unless you already knew how they were written.

I've come up with an analogy to you saying "most of the stuff you can find in there is online for free now". It's like somebody saying "most of the stuff in [Nintendo Power/whatever gaming magazine] you can find online for free". Well, no SHIT. The thing is, those magazines - like 2600 - are held to a much higher standard than the retarded chimps firing off FAQs online. Actually, this is not a good enough analogy, because some of those FAQs are pretty fucking sweet. But the point remains: most online material which covers similar subjects to 2600 is written by either idiots (or people too smart to bother with things like, you know, spelling).
