  4. The bottom line... on Minnesota Latest To Try To Block Gambling Sites · · Score: 1

People that say games like online poker are the same as gambling simply don't understand online poker. Over the long run (hundreds of thousands of hands), variance will no longer be a factor and the better players will win. It's similar to the stockmarket, and definitely a better investment then a lottery ticket. Look at communities like twoplustwo.com where thousands of players talk strategy and learn about the game, it's not gambling.

  7. Re:I thought it was in beta on Google's Chrome Declining In Popularity · · Score: 3, Insightful

Well, I think we all know that beta doesn't really mean anything to Google. In fact, that may be why a lot of people stopped using it after the first few days. Google has created the reputation that their beta products are pretty much fine-tuned and user-ready (gmail for example); but in Chrome's case, it really isn't up to par (at least so far) with the rest of Google's applications and people's expectations.

  8. I guess I'm one of the 1.5 on Google's Chrome Declining In Popularity · · Score: 5, Insightful

I downloaded it a couple days after it was released and although it is rough around the edges I've grown to like it a lot. The history search function is really nice and the fact that it takes about a second to launch compared to the 10 seconds for Firefox (at least for me, this is probably out of the ordinary) is a real bonus.
But honestly, this seems entirely standard. Of course it's going to start off with a surge of popularity and then lose a little momentum. This doesn't mean Google has "dropped the ball", it means that people are acting quite normally. It may have been a mistake for Google to release Chrome before all the kinks were worked out (mine has crashed a couple times); however, I don't think this decline in percentage was anything that wasn't expected -- 1.5% is still a hell of a lot of people.

Obviously, just because he passed a bill before doesn't mean this one is a sure bet; however, it does give it a better chance.

  11. Re:Use the Front Door! on "Back Door" Cheating Scandal Rocks Online Poker · · Score: 4, Insightful

That's called collusion and although it's used from time to time, the regulars pick up on it fast and the software recognizes it even faster. What people aren't understanding about online poker is that it's not the same as "placing a bet", it's a game based on mathematical probability. Online poker players have databases full of information on themselves and their opponent. Every single decision made is either positive expected value or negative, and after a while the better players learn to recognize what situations will yield a positive result. This story has been around for a few years and the real interesting part about it is the fact that it was an online community of poker players who ended up exposing it. This scandal has been developing for quite a while now and if anybody feels like getting the whole story go to the community where it all happened. There's real interesting reading there and I'm surprised it has gone unnoticed on Slashdot as long as it has.
