Mega Man 9 Released, DLC announced
Today Capcom released Mega Man 9, the franchise's return to the 8-bit styles of the '90s. It's currently available for the Wii, and will be coming to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live soon. Capcom also announced some upcoming downloadable content, which will include extra difficulty modes and a stage that never ends, in which you are endlessly attacked. It will also give you the option of playing as Proto Man. Unfortunately, since the game is available through downloads only, the awesome box art will not be available to the public. Gamesradar has some screenshots and boss pictures.
you're missing the point - while i'm personally not a retro gamer, there are a myriad of people who are still speedrunning their old cartridges into the ground. this is an excellent chance to do stuff again on a console as opposed to just emulating it. you'll be able to track scores in real time, download content...it sounds really cool, actually. don't just hate cause it's m$ =)

Talk about nickel and diming your customers, announcing DLC for a downloadable title, before it is even launched.

Did I miss something? When did Microsoft buy Capcom?

Read through the DailyRadar comments and it's full of people who have never played a Megaman/Rockmangame in their lives due to age. Christ on a stick, I'm 23 and I'm already telling geeks to get off my lawn! The shitlet geeks are either growing too fast or are getting dumber by the year. *shakes cane*
This game is only a way to play old-skool Mega-man on the newer platforms and it isn't the first MM game to do it.
This is not the only way. Remember, the Wii can play Gamecube games, so you can just get a Megaman Anniversary Collection for the Gamecube to play.
Um, no. This isn't a rehash of old mega man games, this is a brand new game in the classic 8 bit style. If you're a mega man fan, you've probably played the hell out of the old ones anyway, so a new mega man is actually a big deal.
With any luck this will prove that there's still a market for classic 2d game play. With the Wii's virtual console doing so well, and updates of classic franchises like 1942, it's a pretty good time to be a retro gamer.
Personally, I'd really like to play this game, but buying a Wii or Xbox 360 for what's essentially an 8 bit game seems like a bit of overkill. Anyone know if this is going to make it to the PC?
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!
it's xbox live that it's being released on, which is owned and operated by microsoft.

Actually it's released on WiiWare first. The other releases are ports.
3drealms needs to come out with the Duke nukem forever side stroller and was due after duke3d
You have to BUY the privilige of playing as ProtoMan, sliding and Mega Buster with real money. The game only costs $10, but I've heard that playing as ProtoMan will cost you $4, and sliding will cost you $2.
No, just Hell no. I will not pay for something I can do for free since Mega Man 3
The "tired ol' megaman" would be the "newer" 3d one. I tried to play one of the newer ones, megaman X#KD_: or something like that (what's the japanese fascination with putting random letters after a title to make a new series? Gundam, okay, Gundam SD? Why not just "The next gundam" or "Gundam: viciously beating a dead horse to the point of making it into red pulp." Long tangent there...)
Uh... anyway, I tried to play it, and it made no sense.
There are some 2d franchises which can be successfully brought into the 3rd dimension. Metroid was one. But the vast majority of them turn out to be crap. For some reason, the parent companies refuse to accept the results of many failed experiments. The 3d castlevanias continue to be mediocre at best. The 2d ones are great. Mortal Kombat also was not much fun in 3d. Megaman is the same way. Whatever it was I was playing was an abomination that should have been killed early. Glad to see that capcom is seeing the light.
Incidentally, there's already porn of Splash Woman...

I think he meant don't hate on Live, since Microsoft does have a say in the price of content on the Market place (I believe..)
oogly boogly!
It's also available for (at least) the PS2 & Xbox. e.g. ahref=http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-Anniversary-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B00019HNNCrel=url2html-14131http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-Anniversary-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B00019HNNC>
But I should have paid attention to reviews.. The game is HELLA hard.
If you want a good 3D Mega Man, try Mega Man Legends for the PS1. Imagine Doom, crossed with Tomb Raider, crossed with an RPG. the MML games (MML 1 and 2 and the Tron Bonne game) are the only Mega Man games I like.

Aaah, if there's a space after url: before the http part... it messes up.
The "awesome" aspect of that box art could be strongly contested, especially since Megaman keeps winning the "Worst Box Art Ever" contests on every gaming site.
Well, great, except why they gotta mess with it like that? There are still plenty of things they could have done with 2d. If they wanted to make a franchise that was doom crossed with tomb raider crossed with an RPG... first of all that sounds like complete crap, but second why not make up a new franchise?
If it's quality, you're going to get bites even without brand name recognition. If it's crap, you're just going to ruin a good franchise until you "bring it back old school."
Even if Nintendo had to stop, Mad Cats sure as hell hasn't. I just bought the wireless Gamecube controller and it works just fine for every GC game I play on the Wii

Yes, but it will stop working after six months.
You have to BUY the privilige of getting a cone, chocolate, or nuts top with real money. The ice cream only costs $5, but I've heard that getting cones will cost you $4, and chocolate will cost you $3.
No, just Hell no. I will not pay for something that I could do for free with a Drumstick
They did put out Duke Nukem Manhatten Project.
Why szhouldn't they have tried some 3d? It's not like there's some kind of huge magical barrier that you have to take one side of, you can make either as much as you want.
Besides, almost all of the recent and semi-recent Megaman games are 2d (though some use polygons to render the 2d).

They've got a new company (using the apogee name) working on a set of 2d Duke games, unless that was all just a big joke.

Castlevania FPS on mars: the only way Konami could make the 3d series any worse!
Why szhouldn't they have tried some 3d?
They did. It was crap. They shouldn't KEEP trying it after it didn't work.
Whats the title? Duke Goes for a Walk With HIs Dog and Meets Some Friends Later for Dinner?
Monstar L
Is avoiding "overkill" worth an extra $50? The XBox 360 is now selling for $200.00, while the Wii, if you can find one at retail, is $250.00.

^ Clovis, look! It's that guy you are!
IMO, anything over $100 for a game console is too much. I still have my hands full with my Saturn and N64, so it would be silly to spring for a new console right now. In 5-10 years, the current gen consoles will be cheap as shit, and Mega Man 9 will be just as fun as it ever was.

Hell yes.
Gradius and R-Type both have new installments coming out as downloads! Similar to this megaman 9.
Not to mention Contra 4 (for DS) is the best sidescrolling game in the history of the world.

You can't slide in the game while playing as Rock because the new game is a throwback to the classic format - no sliding, no charge-shot, just jumping and blasting the living shit out of enemies with lots of regular shots. To me this is a good thing - going back to the basics, the real strength of the series.
You can probably think of Blues as "easy mode" - if you want a big shield to hide behind, and a charge shot feature and the ability to move more quickly, play Blues.
Bow-ties are cool.
As a kid I played a bunch of other NES games but never much of Mega Man. I downloaded MM9 yesterday and I see a screen when I press + with a two regions where things are listed. In the top for example I can choose an item where a robot dog appears but what does that do?
On the bottom list there are MANY items, can someone tell me what those things do? The instructions are very much lacking in details. Maybe someone knows of a good web site to read that explains this stuff for someone that did not grow-up with MM-MM4 or so. Not a walk through, I want to figure-out the game myself.
Also I am loving this game. My previous favorite game to play was SuperC, and this shares a lot of the qualities of that. It is very rewarding playing MM9 since I get progressively better the more I play the stages and it requires a level of perfection to play well.
And I will add that the Wii and PS3 version are much more viable than the xbox360 one because of the terrible, terrible dpad of the 360 controller.
They stopped, didn't they? I only recall the Megaman Legends games (Zelda-like, pretty good), X Command Mission (RPG, not that bad) and X7 (supposedly awful) being 3d, everything else was 2d with X8 and Network Transmission using 3d models to depict that 2d. The entire Zero and ZX series are 2d, the original never got a 3d version AFAIK (though plenty of bad 2d ones), only X had a 3d iteration. So it's not like Sega or Konami who keep bashing their head into the same old wall.

It sounds like you played Megaman X7. That game was a horrid piece of filth that should never have polluted the franchise.
I don't think you played Megaman X8, however. Not many people bought it because of the insult that was X7. (I think Capcom has been using alternating teams on their Megaman X series, because typically the odd numbered games sucked if you flip X5 and X6.)
Megaman X8 was the epitome of side-scrolling 3d shooters... not that this is a very large genre... but it was very true to the original Megaman franchise (Megaman and Megaman X) except using 3d graphics. It was arguably one of the top 3, if not my favorite, Megaman.
Resistance is futile. Your technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. You will become one with the morgue
Unfortunately, the Gamecube game has the jump & fire buttons swapped. Years of muscle memory down the drain.
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, START
What? A Mad Cats controller? All the ones I have still work, from my SNES turbo pad on up. I expect this one will do just as well.
