  1. Telling a story without saying one word on Minecraft Wins Gaming Arts Award · · Score: 4, Interesting

This game is telling a story without saying one word. It's a game about us, human beings, having to adapt to this hostile world that we don't really understand. It's about trying to control it, to forge it in a way that makes life is easier. It's about making a shelter for the night, about finding food and ultimately cultivating land (because it's much more practical). It's also about resources and ways of getting them. It's about making tools and weapons, about curiosity and exploration. Minecraft is really about the history of the human race, and it is told without a single line of dialog. To me anyway, this game is a piece of art.

So that mean that it could affect this stream of warm water, or perhaps divert some dominant winds. Basically, that mean that we are supposed to see a reshuffling of weather systems, witch could very well explain why you guys in the US and Europe have more snow, while we in montreal don't get shit this winter. Our summer are also starting to looks similar to those of the UK (rainy and boooooring).

That being said, I'm not sure why everybody is making such a deal with all this. I mean, isn't it a great thing that we try to reduce the amount of crap we output everywhere? We all know that we breath, eat and drink all that crap as well. So really, this ol climate change debate is almost meaningless to me.

I tried putting all my music on my linux box and then mount the partition on my macbook through nfs or sshfs, but it always ends up beign a pain to use because of iTunes. It would take forever to start playing a song, or sometimes it will insist to rescan all my music to do its 'gapless playback' calculation (witch will take nearly 8 hours, for 60Gb of music).

You'd be amazed at how quickly you stop worrying about what's on the TV anyway.

That's the most liberating decision you'll ever made. I stop watching tv a while ago and, while I still enjoy some shows, I find my tv free life saner. Every once in a while when I go see my dad, I am amazed on how lethargic people can became in from of the tube, especially when the commercials rolls in. A life without the constant bombarding of those is a much better life, simply put. When I watch them now, they don't work on me as much as before since I now find them deceitful and just plain stupid. You're gonna tell me "I already finds them stupid and borderline fraudulent" but trust me, live 6 months without tv and you'll see what I mean.

You can call me a conspirationist all you want, but I am now of the opinion that publicity and certain tv shows (news and what is now passed as news) are great tools to hardwired individuals into a certain mindset and infuse various ideas and ideals into the populace.

You just won't get what people talk about at work sometimes :P

  23. Re:am i missing something? on Game Companies Face Hard Economic Choices · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm not sure you are right. Sure, you won't find games for non-gamers on the monthly top ten, but that's just because of the more traditional market reaction to new releases. You got quite a lot of people that "can't wait" for your game to come out. Then it's released, those guys rush to the store and buy the game. Good sales the first week or two, then it's stalling to an halt. The casual market is different. You can have a game that sell averagely, but chances are that it would sell that way for months. Big difference here. It's more of a long term thing.

As I said in a earlier post, the company I was working for last year made some casual games on the Wii, iphone and PC. They didn't show up high on the charts but they are still selling to this day. They made quite a bit of profit with this despite the game selling for 30$. Half the price of a normal game. I think it took 9 months to make, with a team of 4 programmers and 3 artists. Compare that to where I work now, teams of hundred, working on he same game for *years*. You didn't make a profit? No kidding!

So to me, the old model is slowly fading away, and as a game fan I think it's for the best. We're probably going to see more smaller (and arguably more fun and original) games. We are still be playing bigger titles, but they risk beign more sporadic in release.

  24. Re:am i missing something? on Game Companies Face Hard Economic Choices · · Score: 1

Some developers are stuck in their development model me thinks. You need to sell a million games to turn a profit? You want to rise the price of the games you made? Bullsh*t to that. The last company I work for was making game on the Wii and the PC. We didn't sell millions of copies but still turn a nice profit. And the game was going for 30$ for god sake! Ok so it was more of casual nature, but that's ok, really. You then take some of that money and try to do a more complex, graphic intensive games.

I agree with your post. A lot of developing house should *greatly reduce* the number of tripple-A-five-years-in-the-making-top-graphics-open-world-online-multiplayer-with-DLC-and-all-those-other-silly-thing.

Not only do they cost millions of dollars to hired, but I guess that at the end of the movie the sum of all their expenses must be pretty ridiculous. I'm sure there is plenty of pretty good, lesser know/unknown actors who could fill these roles.
