Doom-Like Video Surveillance For Ports In Development
oranghutan writes "A research and development group down under is working to develop an advanced video surveillance system for ports around the world that uses video superimposed onto a 3D map. With 16-megapixel high-definition cameras on a distributed (cabled) network and a proprietary system written in a variety of languages (C++, Python, SQL, etc.), the group from NICTA is aiming to allow security teams at the Port of Brisbane — which is 110km long — to monitor shipping movements, cargo and people. By scrolling along a 3D map, the security teams can click on a location and then get a real-time video feed superimposed onto the map. Authorities from around the world with the right permissions can then access the same system. The main difference from regular surveillance systems is the ability to switch views without having to know camera numbers/locations and the one screen view."
Hide a chainsaw in the port just for the doom feel.
Someday we'll hit the human carrying capacity. And the band will just play on.
Do you normally ask for extra retard on your Pizza or is today special?
Looking at google, I'd say the correct number is 1.1km. It suddenly sounds a whole lot less impressive. All they are doing is applying a texture, and updating it quickly.much research for the dollar.
How close are we to making a traversable semi-virtual world where what is not live-streamed from security cameras can be filled in with google-street-views.
would be a fun addition.
IDKFA would be a really fun addition.
DOOM shipped on diskette (~2.8Mb) but DOOM needed about 4.8mb of hard drive space, which is a fraction of the number of pixels on the cameras in the article. In fact the image size per frame will be bigger than the entire game. See this site for all your DOOM info needs. http://www.gamers.org/docs/FAQ/doomfaq/sect1.html
With the addition of some Artificial Intelligence and some minigun emplacements, this should make our shores 100% safe.
Absolutely nothing can go wrong! I love the future.
How is this like DOOM? It sounds like a Google Maps mashup where you can click on cameras to pull up a window showing the camera view. DOOM is best known for popularizing first-person shooters... sure it's "first-person" when you're looking at video, but if you can't move and you can't shoot anything I fail to see where something else wouldn't make a better reference.
...magnifications that hollywood so much enjoy showing in their movies, can finally become true ;)
You know...in the movies where they zoom in a perfectly clear image out of 3 pixels ;)
What this world is coming to - is for you and me to decide.
I predict that NICTA's upcoming release of Port Cop: Brisbane is poised to become the most boring MORPG in history.
Thank you, Edward Snowden.

This is nothing really new or novel. I remember seeing something like this being covered on tv like 5 years ago. In fact here are some examples.

I heard rumors that Chicago actually has software that ties all of the city's thousands of cameras (some privately owned) into one big grid that can be accessed much the same way. I don't know if they have taken it so far to 3-D model everything or not, but this sort of thing I'd expect to see almost everywhere eventually. Monitoring these giant networks of cameras is hard, and monitoring them all simultaneously is impossible. However, if you can have "virtual cops", per se, that can respond to calls instantly to provide eyes on any situation, these big camera grids become much more useful to law enforcement. I will not touch on the civil liberty aspects that seem to drive debate on any surveillance technology on this site, as I'm sure there will be other threads to cover that.
today is spelling optional day.
I'm holding out for the full review, but I can't see this game going very far. They have a lot to live up to if they're going to compare it to Doom!
Until they all get stuck on two inch ledges because they lack the ability to jump!
Imagine a mashup between World of Warcraft and google earth
Air traffic controllers could 'fly' as needed around their zone, and flights would be realtime tracked across the airscape.. coming off the nose of each plane is a solid black rod the length of the controllers area of responsibility, it would stick straight out in the crafts flight path, and also in front of each plane is a translucent cone of variable length that shows the range of reasonable alternate flight paths without severe manuveouring.
the controller could apply a layer of drastic alternatives as needed..
if the controllers "flight speed" were uncapped, they could zip around and view the traffic in their zone from any angle that let them genuinely visualize the potential overlap of flight paths. This without having to constantly compute internally what the little tiny numbers on the current gen display next to the flight meant about angle, altitude, and proximity to one another.. they could click the plane to get details, and also to communicate with the plane...
'course, patch day would be a problem, but hey- who flies on Tuesdays anyway?

daDA-daDA-daDA-daDAAAA This is actually pretty cool... image a robbery taking place... the police can get a 3d model of where everyone was standing when it went down. even more so they could enter new info from the crime scene and create a CSI-ish simulation of the events.
This needs more cowbell!!!
Doom is a well known 3D game where you have to watch ships?
TerraSight http://www.sarnoff.com/research-and-development/vision-technologies/automotive-robotics-3D-modeling/3D-modeling from Sarnoff corp drapes video from a variety of sources (ground based cameras, UAVs, etc) onto a 3D map. You can then simply move through the world and see what the various feeds are seeing.
I happened to have worked on the product during its earlier stages. We even implemented the ability to control the camera via an XBOX 360 controller which was awesome.
