Zune HD Twitter App Censors Tweets For You!

SharpFang writes "The new Zune HD Twitter app censors naughty words out of tweets in your timeline. Sure, it's a free app, but this kind of active content censorship just rubs me the wrong way."

      Sonic Team created some of the worst censoring filters ever. For the censor on Phantasy Star Online, they somehow managed to miss "fucker" but the word "queue" was absolutely forbidden. Apparently, the ban on talking about your "hoes" extended also to your "sHOES", and God forbid that you might want to mention what you're going to be doing with your HOES on SaTURDay. In Phantasy Star Universe, it actually interferes with legitimate gameplay discussion, because the game's Partner Machines, when spoken of in plural, becomes abbreviated, "PMs", and Sonic Team cannot permit us to discuss a woman's monthly cycle.

      Ultimately, the extreme censors caused me to learn more curse words (and periphery offensive terms) than I was aware of prior to engaging in their excessively-censored games. There's a bit of a Streisand Effect involved in censorship, I think.

      Hmm.. it IS a free app. Just don't use it. i don't understand the point of this article. I first though that the editor was kdawson, but it seems there are some other ones like his that just salivate by the bare sight of the word Microsoft...

      It's like writig an article complaining about the fonts used by default on Firefox. Just use whatever other browser you want. It's not like you have a gun ponting at your head...

      Should be, but isn't. Clearly the people who write software for a Zune are not rocket scientists in the first place, right?

      TFA also complains that the app is slow. Well, if you're searching all text input for a dictionary of naughty words on a underpowered embedded CPU, the fact that it turns out slow is not a surprise.

      I'm guessing top-end mainframes didn't achieve that kind of CPU power until the late 80s.

      Back in the day, ftp.cdrom.com pushed ~1TB a day from one 200-MHz P6 Pentium Pro.

      This is like saying "it's a 2.6GHz Intel chip". There are a lot of different ARM CPUs.

      Little things add up. And a poor implementation can turn any bit of code into a CPU-sucking monstrosity.

      Back in the day, ftp.cdrom.com pushed ~1TB a day from one 200-MHz P6 Pentium Pro.

      I'm guessing even at a mere 200MHz, CPU speed was not the limiting factor there.

      If it was an option that was off by default then most people would never use it. And that isn't what the people who implemented it want.

      They want censorship to be the default so that most people never turn it off. There is very little in the way of "good intentions" behind features like this. You're witnessing the views and mores of a few being forced upon thousands^H^H^Hhundreds of others using Zunes. So much for private industry looking out for freedom of speech.

      I don't have access to the Zune application library, but is it not possible that this is an advertised feature, not a subversive draconian measure? There are some people in this world who actually would rather not be exposed to that part of the English Language.

      The article suggests that the censorship was a surprise (the censorship bit came as an update to an article on its poor performance) so it seems to me that it's pretty clear that it was not advertised as such.

      Yes, I can see that now. I was assuming that there are a variety of twitter apps available, and this particular one was written for people with sensitive eyes. On futher inspection, however, this sounds like Windows Solitaire censoring fours and queens when you draw them from the deck.

      It should be Optional.

      But as long as the consumer/user is informed about the potential of censorship... then it is fine for them to design this app to work however they want it to work (censorship and all).

      It is up to the user to decide whether such (wussy) censorship practices are acceptable or not. I would suspect that this app will not get much usage until the user is able to control text modifications like this.

      yes, get an iphone and use one of the twitter apps

      the article links to another article about Apple censorship but that is from March. in the meantime iPhone OS 3 shipped and every time you install anything that might have a bad word you get a little pop up with a warning where you click OK unless you are a child and your parents censor your iphone/ipod touch

      Freedom of speech means sometimes being offended. The fact that some people are offended by four letter words doesn't mean you can't use them, but by the same rules the fact that you are offended when others write censoring software doesn't mean that they can't do that either.

      I've never understood the commonly held implementation of censorship of profanity. "F*&%" is somehow better than "Fuck", though you can immediately tell what word I intended to use there, and lets face it, if it's a "protect the children" thing, your children have already heard that word and probably worse at school, on TV, or even just in passing in a public area.

      Besides, there are things far more disturbing that a few simple profanities. Look at "Guts" by Chuck Palahniuk.

      And this software doesn't stop anyone from using them. It only stops those who don't want to read them from having to read them. Everyone gets what they want. Sounds like a win-win to me.

      In my experience, the Zune is a solid piece of hardware and the reason I didn't like it was the software. iTunes is no better (got rid of my iPod too) and the problem saturates throughout all of the consumer electronic device industry. Why do these companies think a flashy, bloated piece of software is what consumers want? I can't even use the Blackberry software (by far the worst example out there IMHO) because it is so unconventional and unresponsive.

      I am not a "Fanboi" but where do you get that the Zune is a crappy MP3 player? The only people that I hear that from are Apple Zealots who have never even tried the Zune. I tried one of my friends 2nd gen ones (pre HD) and I loved it. It had some features that I wish my iPod had on it that Apple stole in the latest release of the iPod, FM radio for example.

      "HD" refers to "HD Radio".
      No kidding, remember that poorly promoted, FM interfering, not actually any higher quality, radio standard that requires new equipment to use while offering minimal extra benefit to the user? That's what the HD refers to regarding the Zune.
      Well, it may also refer to the ability to output 720p content to an external device when used with an appropriate adapter, but the Zune screen itself is 480 x 272.
      "272p" is not HD in my book.

      Speak for yourself. Twitter saves me a ton of time everyday. I use it mostly for professional networking (I'm a programmer). I follow a couple hundred other programmers. Instead of me surfing the web an hour so a day to keep my finger on the pulse of the programming world, the information comes to me in my twitter stream. It's much better than looking for content or subscribing to RSS feeds.

    So the Zune HD can twit. Big deal - there's no WWAN so it's not like you can do it anywhere you want. And it's not like the only way to twit is via a Zune HD. If there's a need to twit 24/7 your every breath, poop, and pee, you'd have gotten a cellphone with that capability already (unless you don't do those things outside the range of WiFi networks).

    When the submitter plagiarizes from TFA, that rubs me the wrong way. Quoting the article is one thing; changing a pronoun from "us" to "me" so that the quote reads as your voice is obnoxious.

    I think TFA's use of the word "censor" here is borderline; the zune app is not the means of publication. That said, if there's really no option to turn this feature off, then it's not an app I would use.

      Wrong. Plagiarism isn't like copyright infringement. It has nothing to do with having the author's permission, because the author isn't the one being deceived; the reader is.

      Dictionary definitions outside the context of the discussion are irrelevant.

      In the context of censorship as a social wrong, it refers to the suppression of publication of ideas, period. If you insist on using the wrong definition of censor, then I disagree with the premise entirely. The filtering of objectionable material is not something that universally rubs me the wrong way. Only when that filtering is imposed on the recipient, which in practice can only be done by constraining publication, does it rub me the wrong way. Hence, this case - where the filter is allegedly imposed without the reader's permission, but not by suppresion of publication - is borderline.

      You can choose to use censor to mean any constraint on the flow of information no matter how or by whom it's applied, or you can choose to argue that censorship is an unequivocal wrong, but trying to do both at once makes you a moron.

    It would watch for inappropriate messages, both out-going as well as incoming. Depending on the language use, emails would be rated with a number of chillies. The only 3-chilly email I ever got was from someone who was totally enthusiastic about an upcoming kite festival. It didn't even contain any swear words. Go figure.
