Now when I poke my eye out I can still enjoy 3D!
Every time I start to have faith in humanity, I ruin it by driving to work between 7 and 8 am.
Its fun to look for one slightly plausible "april fool" among genuine articles. A whole stream of them just gets boring.
Is there going to be any real news posted today? Or just all "jokes"? Kinda ruins /. for those who actually enjoy reading real news...
And enjoy the whole world in SIX DEE! For the price of TWO!
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
I'm getting a kick out of this because I have use of only one eye.

It's true.. with the monocle, you can watch a 2D movie while travelling forward in time. Given that time is regarded by some as a dimension, then it is indeed three dimensional. I'll get me coat.
Never email donotemail@WeAreSpammers.com
This one is slightly plausible. The monocle could selectively change focus of parts of the image, or apply any of several other non-binocular depth cues.
No! NOOOOO! But possibly, yes.
Now I can finally have the Sir Patrick Moore look I've always wanted while still enjoying epic 3d TV, I hope they release "The Sky at Night" back catalogue that is 3d-monacle supported!
Bi-Winning
was "Hogan!"
Sad, isn't it?
putting the 'B' in LGBTQ+
Now all I need is a 3D tuxedo!
Hogan!!!
Do not look into videos that show lasers with remaining eye. Double without the monocle.

Am I the only one editing each world with "porn"?
I woke up and Slashdot is covered in drop down menus. I'm going back to bed until April 2nd.
Someone at Toshiba is watching too much Futurama and must have fallen in love with imaginary being called Turanga Leela.
Is it just me or do all the photo's of the people wearing that thing look like they're squinting in massive pain. That or they're in the process of evacuating in their trousers due to immense 3D excitement!
Aren't April Fools jokes supposed to be funny and, you know, fool you?
Yet another endorsement for Netflix.
Sure I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?
Any company with that kind of humor is worth paying money to. (puts in monocle) I say, Well done, sir, well done!
And for you April Fool's haters: get a sense of humor! :-P
First, two polarizing filters in series will filter out all the light.
. /cheap to manufacture because of its hardness and would be far heavy enough to be uncomfortable to wear given that you have to squint to keep it in place. Titanium would have been a much better choice!
Second, tungsten carbide is not lightweight! Tungsten carbide is very heavy, dense, and extremely hard material. It is often used for cutting hardened steel. Its not easy
Besides that. what would be the point of having 3D for just one eye?
Good bye for good slashdot. This has always been a pretty lame place. But 4/1 just sets it over the edge.
A monocle for viewing of digital-ized images created by a difference engine and projected for the enjoyment of fine gentlemen? BRILLIANT!
Besides that. what would be the point of having 3D for just one eye?
Just ya wait 'till the 19th o' September, galley rat! You'll understand!
Why, without your clothes, you're naked, Miss Dudley!
Is the De-3D glasses http://www.thinkgeek.com/interests/looflirpa/e8be/?pfm=AprilFools_homepage_Featured_5
is that I was given mod points and now I have no decent stories on which to actually use them :( Stupid April Fools.
OMG!!! I can't wait!!! OMG!!!
You can get a 3D effect by darkening one eye using the Pulfrich effect. Back in 1993 the BBC had a special 3D week where using 3D glasses with one clear eye and one darkened eye. Shows shot in a specific way would look 3D with the glasses but appear normal to users without the glasses.
They even did a 3D Dr Who Special.
Where can I preorder?
You just gotta love April Fools Day!
at least I hope it's a joke:
Surgery
[While watching Jersey Shore and Big Brother]
"That's my third monocle this week; I simply must stop being so horrified."
Now more people can ruin their eyes!
Can I have your stuff?
"Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies."
Where's Colonel Klink when you need him? I can hear General Burkhalter yelling, "Kleeenk!!!"
If you wear two of them, you see in six dimensions* instead of just three.
* LSD not included.
I was so excited to send my brother a link to this article... but luckily had the good sense to look in to it first. Now I'm just sad. He will never get to revel in 3D.
The joke is on you and Toshiba's writers. You can, indeed, have a 3D monocle -- that is, a device that makes a 2D display appear 3D by only affecting one eye.
There were a number of 3D television experiences in the mid-80's that worked with a pair of glasses, where one eye was covered with a semi-transparent dark film of plastic and the other eye was covered in either clear plastic or nothing at all. You might expect that this would lead to both eyes seeing the same thing at the same time, but you'd be wrong... It turns out that dimmer images travel slightly slower to the brain than bright images, so the device effectively introduces a slight time delay between the two eyes. So if you have an image moving horizontally across a 2D display, the eyes will perceive the image at an offset proportional to its horizontal speed, making it appear to be on a plane in front of or behind the background (depending on which eye is dimmed and whether the object is moving left or right).
Thus, if you view a 2D animated image with horizontal parallax scrolling using these glasses, it will appear 3D. This is known as the Pulfrich effect. There are a number of YouTube videos where you can try it out yourself (use a lens of a pair of sunglasses to cover one eye -- works best in a darkened room).
Because the effect only works with scenes with horizontal motion, you don't see it used very frequently. But, yes, you can have a 3D monocle.
