Rumors Pointing to September iPhone 5 Ship Date

tekgoblin was one of many submitters to send in rumors about the next iPhone's ship date. "Reuters in a tweet have just confirmed that the iPhone 5 will start production in July and ship in September according to their sources. Originally rumors had stated that the iPhone 5 had already started production back in March."

  I love this attitude, because it means when the iPhone 5 gets released I'll be able to get an iPhone 4 on the cheap. My iPhone 3G has definitely been showing its age lately, but I've been holding out until the iPhone 5 is released so the iPhone 4 price will drop.

  People sometimes rewards jokes with other Karma. Why? Because there is truth in humor. Some people may already know all there is to know about the joke and just accept that it's funny; others will be inclined to ask questions after hearing the joke, and so it could be Insightful, or Interesting, etc. Just because it's not funny to you doesn't mean it's a Troll. Trolls present reality in a way that it is not so that you must react to and correct them; this post did not represent reality any differently than it actually exists.

  The Jailbreak is not a solution that answers that question. Can I use it to write or download my own programs without missing out on security and stability updates from Apple? No. Does it void my warranty? Yes. Does that go against the principles of sale and ownership, and even trades and descriptions laws? Yes. Does anybody care? No.
  I'l tell you what else I don't like. Making a valid (if sarcastic) point about why I don't care about the new iPhone 5, and being told something I already knew, which is not a full (or legal) solution for the problems I mentioned..

  It's a phone, dear. If I wanted to ./configure, make, make install programs, I'd build a small computer and run Linux on it.
  ...oh, wait, I already did that, over fifteen years ago. Then I got over myself and moved on.
  EVERYTHING is or contains a computer today. When a company manufactures a phone and advertises it gives a user the ability to do Linux-y things, it's just their way of trying to get the "geek" buy. Kind of like how, when they make a pink "Hello Kitty" case for it, they are bidding for the tween girl buy. It's all just Marketing; don't let yourself be a victim of it.
  People want a phone to make and receive phonecalls, text, answer e-mail, and play Angry Birds. They also want to be made to feel special and part of some elite cadre as well - that's where the Linux-ness and Hello Kitty bits come into it.
  Too bad the folks at Droid didn't realize until too late that they could have captured the same "geek" buzz -- and more of it -- more inexpensively by just shipping a bunch of phones with "limited edition" Bobba Fett cases.

  "and play Angry Birds" - an unforeseen use for a the locked down device they want me to shup up and put up with, which could never have become popular if not for third parties like GameLoft getting their heads around programming Symbian (yuk! but worth it!) and selling the results "back in the day".
  Let me introduce another few unforeseen uses for phones - VoIP, laptop tethering, camera phones, and so on.
  The age of innovation is over when you can't innovate at home, with nothing but the computer itself. That's my point, but you had to read into my comment a little bit.
  I wish Richard Stallman could turn up and defend my corner on this one - locked down computers are always bad for innovation. I like many things about the iPhone, not least the smooth sexy multi-touch, I would have one by now if I could program for it and distribute my stuff without permission from Apple.

  Ok fair point, I'm glad it's not illegal. But imagine this scenario:
  The phone is destined to break, because of some heat fault in the CPU that exist anyway.
  I jailbreak the phone, the phone dies later on from this problem. I'm in no position to flash back to original firmware before sending it off for repair.
  Apple say "the phone died because of the jailbreak". That's why one of my rants mentions the right to run my CPU at 100% for 6 months and expect it not to die (unless I don't provide adequate cooling, but that just complicates the point)
  That's the basis for me saying that Jailbreak isn't a solution. It's wonderful, and I admire those who can create such a thing, but it doesn't solve the buyer's problem with Apple's policy regarding lockdown.

  But why would I want to? It's a phone and a computing device with a specific (marginally expandable) use. I can't ./configure, make, make install programs on my rice cooker, but it makes fantastic rice and pretty darned good porridge. That doesn't make it less useful.
  If you want a little computer, go get a an OQO, or a computer-like device that lets you customize based on android. If you feel left out because you can't have a cool looking iPhone, well I can't help you there. Don't worry, though, I don't find the current crop of iPhones all that aesthetically pleasing - the previous one's were nicer, but all of them still lack basic notification functionality, and no amount of software can fix that.

  You're right, but you're also right about the computer in my car, my Blu-ray player, my central heating system... the world was full of Turing-complete computers locked down by the manufacturer well before the iPhone came along, including plenty of consumer devices, and pretty much all mobile/cell phones. The difference is that Apple have made it easy for anyone to write apps using a laptop or desktop computer and get those apps onto their own phone, or sell them to the general public.

  That about sums it up really. You are rallying about something but you can't quite remember your reasoning, which you got from someone else.
  The iPhone has only been as successful as it is because it restricts apps. They have quality standards which creates a good, competitive ecosystem. I know because I have a blackberry, a platform "open" to any 3rd party development, and the available apps suck. Quality is hit or miss, most of them are terrible.

  This is nothing more than a rumor. To my knowledge, there hasn't been a single verified incident of anyone being turned away from warranty coverage because their device was jailbroken.
  Besides, you can always have your phone registered for development and do whatever you want, no questions asked. At most it will cost an additional $99... register as a company with a few other people and the price quickly goes down. As a bonus, you might even come up with something worth distributing to other people for fun or profit.

  Is it? Maybe it is an exaggeration of the way I use computers; but put it this way, I don't turn them my personal machines off unless I have a good reason to; that includes portables.
  I only used that example to illustrate that not all cooked iPhone CPUs will be due to jailbreaking or mis-use - and I don't think using things to their manufactured tolerance the whole of their service life is unrealistic, I'd call it getting value for money.

  I see your point, but remember those aren't designed to run 3rd party programs like a smartphone is. Sure apple artificially limits their device so the simple answer is 'buy something that fits your needs', there are a lot of other options out there - many that are far superior in terms of hardware and performance.

  Not that easy. You can only install apps from the App Store. Android lets you install them from anywhere, including the SD card, email and random web sites.
  So Android apps can be free as in beer to the developer, but iPhone devs have to pay Apple.

  If your cell phone provider is allowing you to re-up your contract sooner than normal (as AT&T did with a lot of 3GS owners when the 4 came out) it's not crazy at all...right now used iPhone 4s are going for around $400-500 on eBay, give or take. They'll probably go down in price somewhat when the 5 comes out, but still, if you can sell your current, used, old phone for $300 or even just $200, that means you're basically upgrading to the newest generation phone for free. Why wouldn't you want to do that?

  AT&T didn't let anyone with 3GSs upgrade. You had to have been at least, what was it, either 15 or 18 months into an existing contract to qualify for an early upgrade at the iPhone 4 launch. Given that the 3GS had only been out for 12 months at the time, no dice.

  Jesse Jackson Jr.'s comments were complete bullshit, but then again, so are yours. It's not a bad thing that no companies in the US can build these things cost-effectively. Labor costs here are high compared to everywhere else, which means people on average are earning more money and not willing to work for less. That means that we're, on average, better off than countries that perform the fabrication for these devices.

  could soon be over? it will soon be over one way or the other, US debt levels continue to rise. Last time I saw the exact numbers they were at 25% of tax revenue going towards paying the interest, that has only gotten worse, I wonder at what % it becomes irreversible without complete government collapse.

  You can't just churn out iPhone from any old factory, they have to be tooled up which is a major part of the manufacturing costs. Machines have to be reconfigured, software implemented, staff instructed, quality test procedures put in place and tried out on a sample run etc. Even if a Japanese factory making LCDs is shut down for three months it wouldn't make sense to move it to the US, and chances are the contract is for x number of screens and they can't just say "we are moving to the US permanently now".
  That is of course assuming that there is a suitable LCD factory that can be retooled and isn't busy making something else right now. Building one from scratch would take years and years.

I love how /.'s editors love to post stories railing against the end of a free Internet and the abuses of tech by authoritarians in western society, yet continually post these infotisements for two of the biggest players in the movement to abuse and restrict technology (AT&T and Apple). What's next? Are we soon supposed to start loving Disney?

My first AT&T subsidized iPhone was the 4 I got last summer at launch. Since they'll give me a sub'd phone every 18 or so months (I'm eligible in December), this just means less time for me to be _not_ on the cutting edge of the release cycle.

I wonder if you'll be able to ./configure, make, make install programs written on this small computer? That would make it something worth shouting about...
The question you should be asking yourself is, "Why would I buy a product that lacks a feature that I want?"
If you want a cool looking phone, that can play angry birds, and that you can install your own stuff on, get an Android-based phone, not an iPhone.
Cell phones have been small computers for a very long time now, and have all had varying degrees of lockdown.
Heck, I had one of the first phones with a color screen and Verizon forced you to hack into it just to load your own pictures into it.
You want to get worked up about lockdown when there are other non-locked-down choices available? That's just pointless.

  And in the same way, why should anyone care about Microsoft's proprietary software and dubious business practises when they can just build their own computers and use Linux?

I work in a very technical environment, surrounded by, well... geeks. For the past several years I've listened to most of them acquire and then bitch about their various android devices, while simultaneously lauding them for being just so awesome. Busted GPS, Touchwiz problems, crappy interface response (don't worry - the update will fix that!), manufacturers that don't update... it's always something. Except for problems making music apps - failure to do low latency is an OS problem.

In the meantime, my 3gs just quietly keeps working. I got bit by the daylight savings time bug, and it did, in fact, crash once last year, but it's been a very well behaved device in all other respects.

A team member just got a Nexus S, with pure Android. That might work out well. But when the iPhone 5 comes around, I'm in.

  If this was a post about a Win7 phone, everyone would be crying out "MS shill". But because it's pro-Apple, it's OK.
  For the record I have an Android phone and tablet (as a customer) and have had no real problems, assuming getting used to a new UI and poor battery life would apply to any smartphone.

Apple is obviously amazing!
I mean, how else would it get free publicity for a possible upgrade to almost each object they sell?
Don't get me wrong, I like their hardware and use some of it, but the hardware is NOTHING compared to their marketing... (well, actually their hardware/software solutions ARE extremely good in most cases, but posts in almost all blogs and newspapers over what will probably be an incremental upgrade... madness)

The word on the street is the iphone5 is about to make its appearance in June of 2011, the month all iPhones have made their debut. Details are sketchy, but the iphone 5 is rumored to be the most powerful in the iphone line. True iphone fans are speculating the design of the iphone 5 will be all new and improved with added enhancements and the already installed good stuff tweaked for improved usage. The big issue for iPhoners is the antennae problem in the iPhone 4. To some it was an abdominal mistake that Apple will never be able to make up for no matter how high profile the iPhone 5 becomes. Returning to a previous antennae design is the same as admitting failure to some and that is unacceptable to them. While everyone, even Apple, admit there are flaws with the iPhone 4 antennae, it is a technology that might need more time to be redefined and fine tuned before it is working at the level it should and everyone, including Apple, expects it would.
