Want to Change the Slashdot Logo? For 1 Day in October, You Can
The Slashdot logo has been around for a long time now; the truth is, we're rather fond of it, and have only rarely introduced substantial changes. But for the month of October, as a way of celebrating the site's 15 years of delivering News for Nerds, we invite you to help us temporarily change it. If you have an idea of what the Slashdot logo should look like for one day in October, this is your chance to see it on the page. Starting September 15th, we'll be accepting entries, and sending limited edition anniversary T-shirts to the artists we pick to show off on the page throughout the month. (And a Nexus 7 tablet to the artist who ranks best in show.) Click through for information on what we're looking for, how to enter, and the long list of rules that the legal department has provided for your reading pleasure; we look forward to seeing and sharing your ideas.
What else is there?
I'm still bitter that the constant Firefox updates broke the add-in that made that layout permanent.
Be the same old logo
And I don't see anything that would prohibit a Goatse.cx inspired logo. I can see the hands wrapping around the "o" in Slashdot now.
For a small $500,000 fee, they will make you one by using this http://craplogo.me/
I've already set up a greasemonkey script to replace the logo with one of my choosing. OK, I haven't really, but for anybody who really cared to do this, it would be a simple task. Why would you want to change the logo? What is the purpose of this?
Anthropic principle: We see the universe the way it is because if it were different we would not be here to see it.
What about a nice Jimbo Wales banner
...covered in hot grits...
(rather than Goatse, which is only better in Soviet Russia)
It's also the missing step 3
crazy dynamite monkey
How about a logo with Fonzie waterski-jumping over Slashdot while wearing a leather jacket.
"Here Lies Philip J. Fry, named for his uncle, to carry on his spirit"
And see if I can get a dupe Slashdot logo through.
Keep the geezer geeks happy. When you're going to rename the whole Slashdot shebang, what better than sh-bang.
I miss the real Slashdot, too.
For this "slashdot under new ownership" site however, I propose that the logo be a picture of rotting pig-poop (to match the smell and feel of the place).

Beware of October 4th!
Oh Pleeeezzee let it be purple, sparkly and Pony based! *Squee!* *faints*
There are not enough ponies on the Internet.!
Are there a lot of people out there who have just been chomping at the bit to change the slashdot logo?
How about fixing some of the horribly out of date and broken website code instead? Just for one day. In October!
Maybe make a mobile version of the site that is more than barely functional? For one day! In October!
Shameful.
Be careful about using rectangles with rounded corners, though. And any design with elements arranged in a grid
You've certainly got the absence of copyediting down.
Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.
"entrant agrees to allow Sponsor and its designees to use entrant's name, photograph, likeness, statements, biographical information, voice and city and state address for advertising and promotional purposes for this and similar promotions, worldwide, and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known or hereafter devised without additional compensation, review or approval rights, notification or permission, except where prohibited by law."
This is why I'm never going to participate to something like that.
The question is tantamout to:
Wanna do graphic design work for peanuts?
I suspect a few graphic design students might take you up on it, and do well. Any pro will just be offended. Any real amateur will probably fail. It'll be fun to submit a penis or something just for grins and giggles.
This is really lame, even for Slashdot actually. I suggest we "penis bomb" the submissions. Send in doodles of a penis, in whatever fashion you please.
8. PUBLICITY/GRANT OF RIGHTS Except where prohibited by law, by entering the Contest, as a condition of participating in this Contest, entrant agrees to allow Sponsor and its designees to use entrant's name, photograph, likeness, statements, biographical information, voice and city and state address for advertising and promotional purposes for this and similar promotions, worldwide, and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known or hereafter devised without additional compensation, review or approval rights, notification or permission, except where prohibited by law.
Live today, because you never know what tomorrow brings
Let's call it REDDIT.
not really. It comes from joking about the pile of strange characters that are part of web URLs:
h-t-t-p-colon-slash-slash-[x]-dot-org
Where [x] is the website name. Adding "slashdot" there makes an even bigger mouthful.
"Here Lies Philip J. Fry, named for his uncle, to carry on his spirit"
Sorry, but not from me. The powers that run Slashdot probably have good intentions, but more often that not, these design contest are really just cheap ways to get work for nothing (or relatively little). Considering graphic artists are already chronically underappreciated and underpaid by clients, this really isn't fair.
But hey, don't let me discourage any of you aspiring artists out there ...;)
Btw: yes, this is a real concern: http://www.no-spec.com/ http://www.aiga.org/position-spec-work/

Yeah. Here's my idea:
<h1 title="We are sorry for the crap we have been posting">We know we need an editor</h1>
they have no idea who their readers are or why they read Slashdot.
Isn't the root of news for nerds more exciting than your working directory?
/. makes no sense as a path. It's been bugging me for fifteen years. Fix it.
Amusing to see those old Slashdot headlines. Since I was working at Sun at the time this one is particularly poignant.
could have been "change the content on slashdot to 'news for nerds, stuff that matters' for one day"
or change the logo to $la$hdot(c), and continue tossing in vendor-sponsored articles, thinly veiled advertisement in the form of video reviews, inflammatory political and social baiting to increase click traffic, and bugs into your site code for no other reason but sheer profit-driven nature of the operation.
another idea is for one day in october, we can all upgrade to Reddit.
Good people go to bed earlier.
Yeah ! As suggested before, colondot could use a goatse logo ... Fits well ! ( what wouldn't ?)
Plaid. You can never go wrong with a good plaid.
Here's some 2012 logo design trends I stole from another site with absolutely no attribution whatsoever.
Twixt – These contain odd little interlinks between points that suggest connectivity.
Angle bombs – These contain highly angled geometric shapes, oftentimes triangles, and are usually chaotic and without symmetry, like an explosion of sharp pieces from a central explosion.
Leaf amalgams – Leaves used to build cars, people, other leaves, whatever.
Copy – These designs use minute words as a graphic component, but the words could never be read. It is texture, not text.
Penumbra – Think of a halo of layered and colored light circles that are not quite centered on each other.
Monoliths – Squares or rectangles that are in perspective and that appear to be drifting.
So take these, hire some artists for, like $75,000, wind up with something so horrible you have no choice but to bury the only copies of the design in a lead casket far underground, and finally just toss up a loose variant of the Starbucks logo with "Slashdot" in Helvetica and the "d" rotated at a 90 degree angle like the M in the Animal Planet logo.
Keep the new logo up for a week. Quietly revert back to the old one at midnight between Saturday and Sunday. Never speak of it again.
A sword on the neck of Dot Matrix. That's your Slash Dot logo right there.
Does is matter what country you're located in? (obviously, I'm eyeing the possibility of winning a tablet or a t-shirt!)
If you guys are really seriously want to change Slashdot, changing the logo ain't gonna make Slashdot better
You should start changing the modding system
Nowadays too many of great comments have been modded all the way down to "-1" just because their opinions do not fall within the "norm" of those who have tons and tons of mod points
You have to understand that the Slashdot crowd have changed - it ain't the same Slashdot crowd in the beginning, the crowd which tolerated a lot of different views
The original crowd will argue with you, if they disagree with your post, but will not silence you by modding your comment down to '-1"
Nowadays the Slashdot crowd we have are much less tolerable. They rather come on line as "AC" and post ridiculous "goatse" comments and then mod down comments that they disagree with
So, if you are truly seriously want to give Slashdot an overhaul, change the modding system
Or at least - implement a "tracing" system for who mod whose comments so that you can put a trace and flag out those who have abuse their mod points
This is what I have to say, for now
Muchas Gracias, Señor Edward Snowden !
Does this remind people of Missy the lost cat? http://www.27bslash6.com/missy.html
Or asking for a logo to be designed to a certain specification? http://www.27bslash6.com/p2p2.html
This will most certainly be hilarious.
