Slashdot Turns 15, What Are You Doing Later?
October marks Slashdot's 15th birthday. That's right, we're almost old enough to drive the PT Cruiser. Throughout October we'll be running a number of meta news articles about our history, plans for the future, and special interviews. We're also giving away T-shirts to people willing to organize and host the biggest Slashdot parties. It's easy to get started. Just visit the Slashdot Anniversary Party Web Page. Sign up to go to a party, or if there aren't any in your area, create your own during the official party period of Oct. 20-30. The details of your local parties are up to you. Each has a corresponding discussion so you can work it out amongst yourselves. Wherever several Slashdot readers gather, we'll attempt to mail shirts until we run out. Geeknet will host parties in San Francisco, New York, and Ann Arbor.
To be eligible for schwag, you need to schedule your party by September 27, or sign up to attend one by September 28. This will give us time to figure out where to send the shirts, and time to send them. Help us celebrate 15 years of news for nerds and stuff that matters.
Call me when you're 18.
The republican convention wasn't that long ago, and slashdot would have fit right in with the rest of the conservative journalists reporting there.

A party?! With my fellow neck-beards?! How engaging!
Who will be the first one there?

Hey Slashdot - happy fucken birthday, you fucken fagets.
Fucken faget slashdot faget birthday.
A Shirt? Thats AMAZING
What happened to the attendees lists for the 10th anniversary parties? The comments have been preserved, but they all seem to be registering 0 attendees. Losing that history is a bit sad.
Insert self-referential sig here.
Whose PT Cruiser is that? It is my neighbor and I see it sometimes when I go to play frisbee with my dog and I want to say "Yay Slashdot you are a big part of made me myself these past 15 years!"

That, is without a doubt, the ugliest vehicle in the universe.
Must be logged in to view parties. If you don't want me there, why should I care?
I don't know, I might meet some of the people I've insulted.

You know I did sell out to the corporations until I was nearly 30. How precious for slashdot.

I have been reading /. for about all the time I have really worked in IT, when a few friends and I started out Cybercafe back in Martch '97. The era of Quake and IRC, I will never forget. ;)
Thanks for all the news, and the great comments, who, most of the time are worth spending quite alot of time reading (more interesting than the actual news)
Have some nice parties, "overthere".
You forgot to count the dupes

so, imma gonna put you down as a "sorry, no".
I started reading Slashdot some time in high school (late 90's), this was the beginning of my career in IT. I was hired sophomore year to be a member of the paid IT staff and never looked back. I'm also part of a loyal bunch of pot headed IT folk by the name of "Smokedot". We've been around for almost as long, but consume a lot more dorritos.
Thank you Slashdot, even though Rob called me a noob at LinuxWorld a while back, I still love you.
640k ought to be enough for anyone.
Is there a way to see when I joined based on my ID? I think it was some time in 1997.
It'd be cool to see how membership has grown....
User Ids:
1995 : 0 - 1000
1996: 1001 - 50000
1997; 50,000 - 200,000
etc...

Please host a series of G+ hangouts. Come on guys please? I'm begging.
I can only imagine how that party plays out.
Several groups standing around flaming one another over something inane. A couple of people saying the party is a dupe. One guy in the corner talking about picking poo out of the toilet in the library. A couple of people walking around with the goatse picture trying to get people to look at it. And one or two people who seem to have Tourette's shouting obscenities for no good reason. One really loud guy saying the iPad is for hipster douchebags even though he's never used one. The odd mumble about our new Dice (or other) overlords.
Shame there's not one near me. ;-)
Lost at C:>. Found at C.
i visit at least weekly, if not daily, since then
thanks slashdot!
intellectual property law is philosophically incoherent. it is your moral duty to ignore it or sabotage it
The Slashdot party page isn't on Facebook so it must not really exist.
Sorry, but gray text on gray background is making my eyes bleed.
You know, if you have to bribe people to hold a party... and with t-shirts... it's all a bit sad.
The old girl's looking pretty rough these days.
It's a Unix system - I know this.
Sorry guys, but you're a bit late - Slashdot hasn't been this kind of community in a decade, and even if it was, the whole point of the place (Natalie Portman and grits aside) is that we don't have to interact with actual people to talk about tech stuff.
Crap like this is unsettling. We're not FARKers. We don't interact IRL.
It's like you have no idea who your readership is.
Looking at your list of submissions I wouldn't throw any stones there chief.
Is this in addition to or replacement of the logo contest?

15 years of an almost daily ritual, and yet 99% of the time I don't post myself. Still, good times!
Hecubas
Probably not nearly as many as the ID's would indicate. Probably half or more are abandoned and another quarter are sockpuppets, astroturfers, and other bogus accounts. I haven't logged into my own account in years as it just doesn't seem worth it.
Let's give the users some birthday presents. How about bringing about some features that people have been asking for?
Mobile Application - how does a technology based website /not/ have a mobile application? /whatever/
Mobile Support - actually trying to use slashdot on a mobile platform is painful.
Simple Status Change - a simple delta of how people have modded you or commented on your comments?
A disagree button - it's 15 years on and their is still no simple 'disagree', instead fanbois simply -1 any comment against their pet
Comment activity - if you've got a comment that's being heavily modified you can't get the stats for it anymore, as memory serves you used to.
Your user stats - once upon a time these were available, now your limited to your number of +5 comments
Better shill detection - I wouldn't think this would be that hard to program, but I'm not a programmer
Editor - enough said!
In a lot of ways, things are more or less the same. The SNR is lower, but that's true for the internet as a whole. :-(

So your new foster parents are a little uptight about stuff, eh? Too bad about that. You may be no fun to play with soon, but at least the worst trolls will be dismayed. For a while.
deleting the extra space after periods so i can stay relevant, yeah.
Somehow I imagine a pubescent, teenage personification of Slashdot rushing home to his mother's house after school, whacking it off once or twice (or thrice) before anyone else comes home, and spending the rest of the day between the Simpsons and putting stuff in the microwave to see what sparkles and what doesn't.
Where will one find time to code in that laundry list of shenanigans?
What are you doing later?
Borderlands 2 four player co-op. No, you are not invited.
I've been reading since year 1, and feel the only reason I even come here anymore is just force of habit. The quality of the site has continually gone down, the stories are half flamebait and half trollbait, and has strayed far from the originally news for nerds idea.
Not the mention the comment moderation still remains horrifically broken and prone to abuse, the ugly layout has barely gotten any better. This place kind of reminds of myspace or RIM- early pioneer that couldn't innovate and adapt to changing times.
Just wanted to second this, even though I know I'll receive retaliatory moderation for it. Slashdot's approach of 'give random people a badge and a gun with no accountability' has created an environment best suited for long-term flame wars. Please fix either the reqs for being a mod or our ability to kick the assholes out of the mod-pool.

Cheers and happy birthday! :D
What if Dice content standards is actually lower than Reddit's? (and, it follows, lower than /. current ones)
Where is OOG? What will he smash now that there are no more open souce CDs? OOG SMASH TORRENT LINK.. just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Is Natalie Portman still naked and petrified after all these years? :-)

I got a email awhile back about a slashdot app, has this come out yet? I figured they would on anniversary.

So Why don't you two start submitting stories you like yourselves then..?

The well-known news web site Slashdot, along with open source project hosting provider SourceForge and software index Freecode, has been bought by Dice Holdings for $20 million in cash. Dice Holdings, which provides career and job listing web sites, plans to integrate the acquired sites into its own online presence....
Because I'm unaware of a technique where submitting a story will fix our moderation system.

But no, apart from editorial deficiencies I think the site is still doing pretty well. I'm just less interested in it. The internet's a bit larger too.
Coincidentally, 15 is also the median age on slashdot nowadays. You can tell by the highly sophisticated ways they dismiss non-mainstream technology for being, well, non-mainstream.
This has better be part of some truly not funny practical joke.
WTF are Dice content standards violations? Wrong type of plastic?

Only it's not really the same "Slashdot" any more now, is it? It's like a sex slave being passed around from one plantation owner to another, but none of 'em likes her enough to cough up a weddin' ring.

How exactly does anything to do with story submission fix the moderation of comments that follows? See, you're precisely the sort of shoot-from-the-hip knee-jerker that the moderation system should exclude. You would moderate before you think. What's done is then done, even if you do belatedly bring some introspection to bear; you can't change your mods. Well... you could if you posted in the discussion, but would we really wanna hear what you have to say after you shot from the hip in the first place?

My feelings about Slashdot can be summed up in the words of a great philosopher: "I've never felt so accepted in all my life. These people looked deep within my soul and assigned me a number based on the order in which I joined."
Thanks for providing one of the best internet forums for intelligent discussions. Some people will claim that this site isn't what it once was, but many other sites have come up and none of them provide a better format for progressive discussions. Don't ever lose that, Slashdot!
Dear Slashdot,
It was good while it lasted.
Happy Birthday.

I'd say that the moderation system is working well. I've been banned from moderating for years now. My karma is probably just about infinite, but I like to balance out every (+5, interesting) with a (-1, troll). It makes life interesting.
And, yes, I have been diagnosed as bipolar.
Dice.com bought slashdot. It was on the front page yesterday.
BTW, moderators, a heartfelt thank you for modding my previous post and the one I responded to as offtopic. Seriously, it was indeed offtopic and I'd hoped you'd mod it and its parent down, my karma remains excellent and I like to see slashdot retain its excellence as well. Good work!

congrats /.
I used to get mod points sprayed in my face like a porn star. Fifteen points per day and sometimes they would refill while I was moderating. One day, I made a post that got downmodded and now I rarely see points.
I see your sig is back; this anon feels influential today.
Hah! I had forgotten I took it down for an experiment.
And, yeah, I lost my mod points not long after (fairly) modding up a comment that failed to paint Microsoft as some sort of cartoonesque villain. I doubt that was a coincidence.

I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it. It's easy enough for you and I to write exactly the same thing in a post. If I still had mod points (used 'em up yesterday) I'd have modded them down.
I found after 15 years, Slashdot is a day late and a dollar short. (Literally on the first, metaphorically on the latter.)
Back in the good ol' days the Slashdot newsletter came just after midnight. It used to be plain text, which made it useful for cutting and pasting and forwarding to friends.
Now it comes at Noon a half a day late with old Stories. If I want fresh stories I have to be mindful to go to the web site, which I rarely do anymore. The newsletter is now html which is not as convenient as it once was.

Well done /. I'm doubly pleased because I now have something to buy with the ThinkGeek voucher I've had sitting on my desk for the last year. (I'm not saying ThinkGeek doesn't have lots of cool stuff, I just don't have any more room for cool toys, but I always have a need of more t-shirts)
Okay, I somehow have been living with Slashdot for the last 10+ years, sharing some part of my life with it, through good and bad.
So I want some 'party', maybe not the usual, outgoing splurge; it is getting cold in Germany anyway. And yet, I will be sitting in my favourite place in Duisburg that evening, and wonder if anyone wants to come along?
Just check the parties, and find your way!
You're not the only German here, but Duisburg's too far away for me.
You are my "internet newspaper"!

And isc.incidents.org, my 1st 2 stops everyday.....
Can't say how long its been, 1999?
keep it alive!
Will Slashdot give me a fund to conduct a party on my locality? Don't worry, the money would be worth it, I'll send pictures from the party pepz...
What is the likelihood of there being a party in the UK. Or anywhere else in Europe?

Duisburg is fine. I'm planning to attend.
And I'll be pleased to shake the hand of a 3-digit-Slashdotter!
Hopefully a few more people can make it? And maybe-maybe we can get a T-shirt? Who knows!
Which party is Natalie Portman attending?
