.xxx Registrar To Launch Pr0n Search Engine
angry tapir writes "The company behind the .xxx top-level domain plans to launch a search engine in an effort to drive more traffic to .xxx websites and give pornography fans a more satisfying search experience. ICM Registry, which operates the 9-month-old .xxx TLD, is scheduled to launch Search.xxx this week, said Stuart Lawley, ICM's CEO. The new search engine will give users a more streamlined searching process, help protect them from viruses and malware and help guard their privacy, he said. The search engine has cataloged 21 million webpages from .xxx sites, he said. 'It's porn, only porn, all porn,' he said. 'There's as much porn there as anyone would need, I'd imagine.'"
what... too busy searching to post?
Nerd: I invented a program that downloads porn off the internet one million times faster.
Marge Simpson: Does anybody need that much porno?
Homer Simpson: Uuh-huuh-uuuh, one million times.
srsly.
Now I can finally find some porn on the Internet. It's been so difficult before now...
For your security, this post has been encrypted with ROT-13, twice.
"There's as much porn there as anyone would need, I imagine."
Challenge accepted, sir.
"Porn is very personal," he said. "You may have been looking for Brazilian midget transsexuals, and you're sitting there at home with your kid or your wife saying, 'Let's go on a holiday to Brazil,' and the next thing, it's suggesting Brazilian midget transsexuals from your previous Google search history."
I guess that's still better than having your family accidentally bump into the midget transsexuals during the family trip to Brazil :)
... I have no idea how they are going to beat Bing. Bing is the ne-plus-ultra of porn search. It's amazing.
Honest.
Go to video and turn off the kiddie filter and search what your little black heart desires.
Google for work.
Bing for porn.

Violet Blue has a story about which major sites were suckered into publishing that press release. Slashdot FAIL.
It'll be interesting to watch the dip in Google's search traffic as half the web searches instantly move over to this site.
'There's as much porn there as anyone would need, I'd imagine.'
This man needs a bigger imagination!
Searching for 'thong' won't turn up a bunch of photos of some geeky asian dude!
This could work out well. One of my main criticisms behind the whole xxx TLD has been that it wouldn't really lessen the amount of porn under other TLD's. Having a search engine designed for it, especially if they limit the results to only the xxx TLD, would give incentive for companies to migrate over to xxx.
... porn finds YOU!
This sig is not paradoxical or ironic.
Best part is that there must be someone out there who has an FBI warning fetish.

. Not that I wouldn’t love to interview Nina Mercedez and Mr. Lawley about competitive search engine marketing and optimization for its clients, or their opinions on determining user intent, especially as related to current trends in semantic search among their competitors. Because I think that would begood fun.
:-)
Let's see who can think of the best expansion for the "ICM" acronym.
On second thought, let's don't.
Sheesh, evil *and* a jerk. -- Jade
It's not pr0n. It's pornography. Or porn, if you must.
The fuck, are you guys all still fourteen years old, sitting there snickering over how clever you are because you switched around a couple letters and now nobody will realize what you're REALLY talking about? Jesus.
The post you link to seems to make the claim that this isn't news worthy inherently because it was told to her in the form of a press release, which makes very little sense. Any real journalist would consider the story objectively, and if they disagreed with the company's standards which she seems to do write a negative post about it. Which she did. So was she suckered in then? After all, her entire post is about that very same press release.
Whether the story is newsworthy or not is a completely different issue, and you'll notice it's one she doesn't touch. Clearly she deems it news worthy since she actually posted about it, but she wants to do so in a negative way so she tries to cast a negative light on anyone else who didn't agree with her. That doesn't exactly smack of journalistic integrity, now does it?
I should perhaps note that I completely agree with her opinions on the .xxx tld and so on, but that post just made me chuckle, it's not even worth taking seriously. After all, it's based on a press release.
I always wanted an 'Unsafe search' option. If safe search removes all the pervy links from a search, I want a button that ONLY returns pervy results.
I really want to see what Google returns with 'unsafe search' turned on for truly boring and mundane words like 'Baseball', 'Database', or 'Tax return'. I bet you could find some pretty fucking weird sites with that feature....
HA! I just wasted some of your bandwidth with a frivolous sig!

Yep. All the time. Who doesn't go scouring the web for Brazilian midget transsexuals just weeks before they take a family trip to Brazil for the holiday? Surely every straight man that has ever lived who respects his wife, his family, and his own masculinity has done it...

What exactly is so surprising about a news site quoting press releases?

How long after you use that search engine do the CIA, FBI, DEA, et al come breaking down your door?
Why not grow up and type Porn in the title moron...
That's why you shouldn't aim toward the keyboard, genius.
BTW, if I ever meet you in real life, please don't let me use your computer!
The story linked by Slashdot is not a rewritten press release. There's a bit of journalism in the story, including an interview with Lawley. Sometimes, press releases actually point reporters to some actual news, believe it or not.
There were a number of websites/blogs that rewrote the story, took the good quotes and slapped a new headline on it. This journalism thing is tough work, apparently.

give pornography fans a more satisfying search experience
Umm, if the search is supposed to be satisfying, you're doing it wrong. Oh, wait.
A successful API design takes a mixture of software design and pedagogy.
But the main question is: will they have a "I'm feeling lucky button?"

and I wish I had no connection with this whole sordid business. But as the moral — repeat, moral — integrity of the United States is involved, I must first establish my credentials. Only thus will you understand how, with the aide of the late Dr. Alfred Kinsey, I have unwittingly triggered an avalanche that may sweep away much of Western civilization.
What would be cool is if you join forums and use your email address in the .xxx namespace and you end up getting spammed but for stuff you actually need.
This will be a faster way to get pwned than connecting an unpatched Windows box directly to the raw internet.

Thank you for you thoughtful response - I was of course being a bit provocative. I guess I hoped people would realise when they saw my rather immodest self-assessment.
What always irritates me when the talk is about sex or pornography, is this constant teenage giggle and the Beavis & Butthead style comments, and I thought somebody ought to give a bit of counterplay. I know there is more than Ken and Barbie out there, and I particularly enjoy the beauty of the natural women on display - but looking at sexual acts per se just doesn't do it for me.
BTW, I'm sorry you have lost your teenage enthusiasm.
Don't be. Life is still good, and I have every confidence that it will continue to be so until I pass my 110th birthday and get shot by a jealous husband. We all change as we get older, and for me it has meant that I now have other interests that I find more satisfying. I'm happy - how can that not be good? Trying to hold on to youth is a losing game and can only make you frustrated.
