Fairy Penguins Send First Email
An anonymous reader writes "Australian researchers have successfully connected a Tasmanian colony of fairy penguins to the internet. The research effort was part of the Interspecies Internet initiative, promoted by Google's chief internet evangelist Vint Cerf and former Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel in a TED talk earlier this year."
At least fairy penguins can make up for the lack of ponies.
What are some other sites similar to Slashdot that I can use today (and maybe longer)?

I read /. for info for techie news from other techies. The posting of this nonsense I making reconsider coming to /.
Too bad Linus is probably too busy at Microsoft to respond.
It's "Gay" not "Fairy".
We need to stop this bigotry. Like when the media reported on the failed lesbians who caused the flooding in New Orleans a few years ago. They called them "dykes" - please - stop it!

ROT13! How 1980s!
Nothing will ever approach OMG! Ponies!
I actually enjoy Slashdot taking a day of the year out to just be silly. In past years some of the jokes have been hysterical. I enjoyed the "achievements" thing. The rot13 though is just irritating. So much fun having to paste all the summaries into my terminal so I can read them; I just love obvious repetitive tasks.

/. has been going down hill for a while now. Today's ass-hat-ery ISN'T HELPING!!!
This sucks. Really.
It's not an April's fool joke if you can tell by looking at it for 2 microseconds.
April 1st is just the day when Slashdot is utterly useless. Every Single One of the news stories is a ridiculously badly camouflaged "joke".
Too bad, 'cause I'm in bed with a flu. Oh well...

Today would have been the perfect day to kill Google Reader. I mean, I've already closed it because all my feeds are full of lame jokes on the wrong date
P.S. April's Fool is on Dec. 28th where I'm at (Día de los Santos Inocentes)
I, for one, welcome our internet connected, email sending, fairly penguin overlords.
Are you getting the link "Click for a FREE PREVIEW of the decrypted version of this story!", which should show you the summary below it after clicking?
Compared to the general web population, Slashdot has a lot more people who are paranoid enough about browser security to run something like NoScript.
It is a quick and easy way to determine that they are still doing the lame April Fools schtick.
Otherwise its kinda OK .. a little below slash-dot standards i'd say .. sometime ago i went to digg .. digg got so pathetic that i came back to slashdot ... in spite of their april fool jokes :)
You do realize that getting a rise out of you,
IS the joke, right? It's funny to the people doing it, and yes does reveal the contempt that just about anyone has for most other people.
While I agree that the "stories" are lame and unfunny, there are several levels of joke here.
The only winning move is not to play.
They're called "little penguins", you insensitive clod.
