GNU MediaGoblin 0.5.0 "Goblin Force" Released

Good luck to them in doing that while they're still giving their high-profile work ridiculous neckbeard titles like "GNU Media Goblin", "GNU SIP Witch", "GNU Tools Cauldron" (the GNU prefix is required; one or more of their devotees will show up and throw a shit fit over it in public if you omit it).

It's like the FSF want to embarass the FOSS world into avoiding them and the ideals they're preaching; they're like a church offering libre enlightenment but the only entrance is through a municipal sewage tunnel with no catwalks.

FOSS may have GIMP, but Microsoft has WiMP and WinCE. But software names are far less stupid than automobile names.

I just saw a truck in the parking lot with the trunk emblazoned "Toyota TRD". I had to do a double take, Toyota Turd? That's what it says in txtspk.

How about the Dodge Startus, er, Stratus? The Chevy Nova? "No va" is Spanish for "doesn't go." Worse yet is the KIA. What damned fool named a car company the military acronym for Killed In Action??

How about Nestea? Yassah, I'm gonna love me some o'thet Nasty!

Does your town have an oriental restaurant named the Dynasty? Come on, I'm going to eat in a restaurant named "die nasty"??

"TRD" does remind me of turd, but all the other examples are absolutely ridiculous.

WIMP is not a product, and it's the only word you can make out of those letters. It's memorable. I think it's a lot better than PWIM.
It's not Wince, it's Windows CE. Kia is not Kay-eye-ay, it's Kee-ah.
Nestea: interesting. I have never thought of that. Dynasty: not interesting. In fact, the thought of being more reminded of "die nasty" than actual dynasties tells me you need a better education.

Chevrolet did reasonably well with the Nova in Latin America, even exceeding its sales projections in Venezuela. The story of the Chevy Nova is a classic example of an urban legend, a story that is told and retold so often that it is believed to be true even though it isn't. Like most other urban legends, there is some element of truth in the story (no va indeed means "it doesn't go")

Does anyone actually _use_ MediaGoblin? Their wiki lists a couple of sites, but they all seem a lot more "I installed this to try it out" and much less "this serves a need for me."

Yeah, myOpenID is just an implementation of OpenID. That it was sort-of the first and most open version is the ironic bit - GNU MediaGoblin is mostly going to have to rely on closed implementations (Facebook, Google, Yahoo, etc.) of the standard to do the actual authenticating.

"Goblin Force" sounds like either (a) a really goofy, family-oriented fantasy movie that's the favourite of the kid who always gets beaten up in middle school (*), or (b) a pornographic movie that has absolutely *nothing* to do with mythical creatures.

(*) Partly because he's the kind of kid geeky enough to like "Goblin Force" and partly because he was naive enough to actually *admit* that "Goblin Force" was his favourite film.

I already use Wordpress for posting articles, but I'd rather have something that allows me to have a more open wiki structure to ideas, scripts, etc. So is this a blog/media/wiki all in one? Or should I just try bolting a wiki onto my wordpress and hope they support using a single user database some day. (it's been a while since I've checked into Wordpress/Wiki integration so that may already have happened) - HEX

GMG is like Youtube. Except, you don't only post videos. You post one item, which can be any number of different media - an article or "blog post", a song, a video, a 3D-rendered image, a video game... Anything. People may comment on this item to say "Wow, nice job" or "Eww that sucks!"

Now, further imagine that all files are hosted on your own equipment.

Now, further imagine that there are thousands of these servers, and they all speak to one another, and they never require you to sign up for anything in order to comment and create "video responses" and whatnot. Sounds good yet?

Obliquely alluding to the potential of this or any FOSS app to de-cathedralize a social media site by having p2p circles of association that is secure, private as one wants, self-maintained and owned and hopefully has a plug/module for dydns or like; only makes a wooshing sound below the din of /. aspies and critics.
Tho the point on naming is wisely taken. Goblins, daemons, zombies.... oh my....
