Russia Moves From Summer Time To Standard Time
jones_supa writes: Russia's legislature, often accused of metaphorically turning back the clock, has decided to do it literally – abandoning the policy of keeping the country on daylight-saving time all year. The 2011 move to impose permanent "summer time" in 2011 was one of the most memorable and least popular initiatives of Dmitry Medvedev's presidency. It forced tens of millions to travel to their jobs in pitch darkness during the winter. In the depths of December, the sun doesn't clear the horizon in Moscow until 10am. The State Duma, the lower house of parliament, voted 442-1 on Tuesday to return to standard time this autumn and stay there all year.

They knew that people will be swearing when the new time will become official, as such they made two laws at the same time. Russians themselves are, actually, unhappy and in their view this is a pure restriction of the free speech.

So... How is this even tangentially related to being newsworthy for a tech site? Like, seriously, WTF?!
Every March a story about DST is posted on /. and the posts are about 3 to 1 against the entire concept of turning clocks ahead and back twice a year. Big waste of time and money, government bureaucrats looking to justify additional staff, etc.
Hey, maybe the coders and IT admins here don't know everything about everything even when they reach a consensus? Nah... couldn't be.

Consider the inherent illogical move of banning words. Everybody has to know the words if you want to ban them. They have to know the banned word in order to not use it, thus someone has to use it, to teach them not to use it !? One assumes Russian will simply use the English words khuy (cock), pizda (cunt), yebat (to fuck) and blyad (whore) instead.
Surely the craziness of teaching people words they are not allowed to use to make sure they can adhere to the law and not use them will dawn on them.

We also have tempurature ranges from -45ÂC to +45ÂC,and 9 months of winter, 3 months of potholes. :-)

It also forces millions to "suffer" through really long summer days. Those of us who live in NYC also call it the "running of the boobies' and you can pry it from our cold, dead hands.
What is more concerning is your switch from ranting about day light savings time to an aside about censoring, well, everything.
Shifting time an hour is the act of a mad-man but telling other people what they can say and how they can express themselves is an aside? You should get your priorities in order.
The time change must be either due to, or the cause of global warming, otherwise it is not true.
In Russia? Are you fucking kidding me? The Russians are artistes of swearing! No joke, they have a 2 or 3 syllable short little word which translates roughly to "strike on the cunt with a spatula", just for one example...
DST should be eliminated. So should time zones. I live pretty far north, where your days get shortened more than an average american, but i dont use DST since i moved here and its awesome. but why even have time zones? it was basically a system for "high noon" being the same in places, aka: sundial based. who cares if you work 9-5 or 2-10 or 16-00. its still 8 hours. and it would be magically delicious

Some things have their own time implementations. Other things are not updated without manual intervention.
Personally I see some merit in the Chinese option of having the entire place on Beijing time and adjusting work hours regionally instead - or just doing everything on UTC for the rest of us.
I can't wait for them to publish the list of words that are illegal to publish...

Hail UTC. Everyone should use it. I mean, what's in a number for keeping track when you have to do stuff? Local time is hard enough and then comes daylight saving. Ever travelled by boat from Europe main land to the British isles? Ever had to calculate tides and/or water flow? Ever had an uncomfortable/critical email exchange between Europe and British isles (where the feet-dragger typically abuses any possible source of unclarity)?

Great move! And I guess that means it will take another three years before it sinks in that DST does still make sense in summer, when instead of being woken up by daylight two or three hours before the workday begins, you can have that extra summer daylight at the end of the day, when you can actually enjoy it in peace.

Russia is a modern fascist-governed country. The chief ideology that replaced democratically-aimed Yeltsin era became Russian Christian-Orthodox Fascism. It is evidenced in prohibition on much of the freedom of speech, freedom of expression, murders of critical journalists, arrests and trials of the anti-government activists, arrests and trials of the gay activists, rampant government-sponsored homophobia and xenophobia, and even aggression and annexation of the land of her neighbors.
That's why I don't understand American left (from the group of those who always defend Russia no matter what). It is more then obvious that Russia is in the business much worse then the USA when it comes to human rights, privacy, freedom of speech and expression, and respect for other country's territories. Even the famous American anti-spying pro-privacy whistle-blower Snowden after finding refuge in Russia became its internal praiser (few months ago he was the one that threw a "softball" question at Putin's press conference if there is any electronic monitoring is going on within the FSB (renamed KGB) walls, question that was obviously designed for him to be asked and for Putin to be answered, even though Snowden never had any journalistic accreditation to be in that press conference in the first place.
A rampant anti-Americanism and anti-Europeanism allows even the highest in power to call Americans "Pendos" (a derogatory Russian word reserved for the Greeks) and Europeans -- "Gay-ropeans" -- an obvious reference to the Russia's extreme homophobic stand in the years of Putin's reign.
Russia has actively supported the most corrupted regimes in their vicinity. When Ukraine has decided to rebel and depose its corrupt leader because it wanted to live like civilized people -- Ukraine's political leadership was quite ironically accused of being fascist, and the Crimean peninsula was annexed through a "referendum" under the barrel of unmarked Russian solders' guns (which was later admitted by Putin to be actually Russian soldiers.), and even that referendum's results were corrupted. (A commission appointed by Kremlin specifically admitted that only 43% of the people of Crimea wanted to be part of Russia, not 98%., and only people of the city of Sevastopol (where the Russian fleet has a base) voted at close to 80% to be a part. In one famous press conferences Vladimir Putin gave at the time of annexation, on the question what would happened if the Ukrainian military in Crimea will not give up their arms and start fighting invading soldiers, Putin answered that the soldiers will stand behind women and children, and he will see how will Ukrainian soldiers shoot at them.
For the last few months after the Crimea's annexation Russia has been blowing up tensions in Ukraine's eastern regions, sending their weaponry and thugs, paying and training these thugs to terrorize and murder the Ukrainian people. They have done it before in 2008 in Georgia.
I can give many more examples of this, but Russia is most parallel with the Germany of 1930s. The same Goebbels' style propaganda is across all the Russian TV channels and newspapers, with lies, falsified information and imagery and unprecedented paranoia (Russian political idea that Americans want nothing but to enslave the Russian people), at times antisemitism (recently one of the TV presenters had a flat-out said that Jews are guilty of Holocaust), xenophobia (against all nationalities, even the Slavic ones that do not support the policies of Putin), homophobia (the chief of the Russian main news agency, Dmitry Kiselev said that homosexuals' hearts should be burned upon their deaths), and many more things.

Funny how everybody suddenly loves DST now that Russia is abandoning it completely.
So from now on they’ll have the luxury of seeing a glimpse of the sun when they drive to work, yet they’ll have to resort to pitch black darkness when they get back. In summer, the sun will rise at 4 in the morning and it will be dark before nine in the evening. It won’t be long till there is a popular backlash against it – people will demand their DST back because they want their beauty sleep unimpeded by the overly early sunrise, and they want their evenings to be light longer.
At least that’s precisely what happened in my country when the government abolished DST for a couple of years. Plus there were ramifications regarding time differences with adjacent countries that had previously been in the same timezone. All in all, the experience that looked nice on paper (and I was initially for it) turned out horribly wrong. Even DST all year round (in effect moving the timezone one zone eastwards) is a saner approach, as long as humans are involved.
