Elon Musk Hints 1st Person To Mars May Go Via New Brownsville Spaceport
MarkWhittington writes If SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has his way, the first astronaut to set foot on Mars may begin his or her journey from the new commercial spaceport being built at Boca Chica Beach, just outside Brownsville, Texas. The Texas Tribune reported on Monday that Musk made the suggestion at the ground breaking ceremony of the commercial spaceport. The ceremony was also attended by Texas Gov. Rick Perry and various other Texas politicians and dignitaries, Musk's desire to establish a Mars colony and even retire to the Red Planet himself is not a secret.
I mean, "We're building a [cool thing] and [cool related activity] might happen there" isn't really meaningful outside of a PR office.
If you watch the video when Elon says this, it sounds more like he is saying it is a possibility, but doesn't sound like he thinks it is the most likely outcome. Though it is always a possibility, this statement is more likely mild pandering to those in attendance.
Men will finally be from Mars...Now, if only we could work so hard to get to Venus
It is coming back.
So Musk wants to retire on Mars. He's stll got a couple of decades left of work in him. Then, how ironic it would be if, just as he lands, Earth is hitting the Singularity, transforming our civilization's power and aspirations so radically that travelling on a slow chemical fuel rocket to another planet would seem horribly passé.
...I have a few suggestions for the initial passenger list, provided the flight is "one way".
So they did use a shovel, right?
Sing along now! Oh we'll send him to outer space, to find another race
Stuff Rick Perry's useless carcass into a capsule and send him ASAP.
One can see, geographically, what the intent of the Brownsville launch facility will be. As the first stage of the Falcon 9 increasingly approaches reuse-ability, the first stage is going to need a place to land and be refurbished--and what better place than the current assembly and launch area at the Cape?
It is probably a practical impossibility to reserve enough fuel on the Falcon 9 to do an RTB back to the cape, as staging occurs right around 2000 m/s and reversing direction from that sort of velocity is surely more dangerous, inefficient, and mechanically wearing than launching from Brownsville and letting the first stage follow its natural 2 km/s parabolic path over Florida instead. A possible confirmation might be provided by our rocket guys, who should be able to plot an un-guided first stage fall of a Falcon 9--I'll bet that thing would naturally land a couple hundred miles off the east coast of Florida.
The savings generated by saving the first stage is potentially huge. A Falcon 9 Heavy would expend 27 Merlin engines at over a million bucks each just to get through the first stage and its two identical strap-ons. If one can get ten launches out of those rockets instead of one....
The position of Brownsville might also still allow for short-round reentry, landing and transport of the Falcon 9 second stage at for example Edwards or White Sands, or that spaceport thing that Branson is doing. A full once-around for the second stage is probably also costly in fuel and weight, while landing a couple thousand miles short may be well worth it.

If I recall correctly, several pages of From the Earth to the Moon were devoted to the choice of where to place the giant moon-gun. The choice eventually fell to one between Brownsville or "Tampa-town." Florida eventually won in Verne's book, as it did in real life.
Where they apply ON TOPIC (or are brought up 1st otherwise, like by yourself now (& I don't really perceive you as trolling here)).
Yes - THAT has been going extremely well for me, & yes, there *IS* a reason I do it:
Hosts work, & do more for added speed, security, reliability, + more for users of them, AND more efficiently than inferior competitors in MANY browser addons... that's all.
* Guys like Mr. Musk ARE, & have been, inspirational to me in that capacity, as is Linus Torvalds for example (per my post about him today here as well -> http://linux.slashdot.org/comm... )
Why? Well, ok - These are men I truly admire, as they're out doing THE RIGHT THING by others + following through on their visions/dreams in tech, & by being of service to others, their world gets better too!

P.S.=> Things are going VERY well on the hosts project I have in APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit http://start64.com/index.php?o...
So much so, that the best in the antivirus/antispyware industry MalwareBytes, via hpHosts, best in the industry as of this recent test -> http://www.av-test.org/en/news... who feature AND RECOMMEND my APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit as "best of breed" @ the top of the hpHosts website here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... had to move to AMAZON un-DDoS'able servers AFTER I started "p.r.'ing" my app here on /. - why?
TOO MUCH DEMAND!
Which, for me @ least, is GOOD news - means my app's being used like mad, which only makes sense - it's using what you ALREADY natively have, for better speed, security, reliability & more (vs. "bolting on more layers of complexity" which potentially leads to room for breakdown, if not exploit due to more "moving parts"...).
(I've been VERY successful in this effort: Why? REACHING YOU "GEEKS/NERDS" here is how & why: YOU guys are the ones folks reach out to for advisement - you've all turned out to be the best "p.r." in the world! Made it worth the effort...)

A lot of people died just trying to cross the Atlantic ocean for the first time... and that's in an environment that is actually hospitable to life.
I suspect that making the months-long trip to mars to be just as fatal for many before we succeed.
File under 'M' for 'Manic ranting'
At best, there'll be nothing but hard work on Mars. Growing plants there with less sunlight, poor soil is not going to be fun when you're 70. Maintaining the habitats isn't going to be easy either.
I wish him all the luck in the world, but its going to be one heck of an uphill battle. The financial and technical hurtles are bad enough (though not insurmountable) but the political & corporate hurtles make those look like childs play. The government has cultivated this mentality that "space is hard" and that only through massive expenditures & defense contractor involvement is it possible. The government is going to fight tooth and nail against anyone who threatens to disrupt that image and the defense contractors will be right there with them in the hopes of protecting their lucrative launch/development contracts.
Proof's in the pudding (244++ of my upmodded posts) http://it.slashdot.org/comment... circa 2009-PRESENT.
Admittedly, I don't post as much on as many varied topics due to working on my hosts program, acquiring data for it, & supporting it too + of course "real life" outside of the internet too!
So, I had to put a *LOT* of effort into posting on it to reach others - where it applied to the topic @ hand.
(Yes, again - MAINLY for reaching 'geeks/nerds' for the reasons I noted last post)
*IF* you haven't done such a project in your time? Heh - you wouldn't *believe* how much time that takes but it *HAS* to be done too.
However: Between that, home remodeling, & taking care of rental properties I have interests in? There's ONLY 24 hrs. in a day & all that, lol... takes time/effort.
So, it dominated much of my postings since late 2012 to present is all... thus, I don't *DO* as many varied topics in posts anymore (@ least NOT like I used to is all).
Still - As I said last post?
The "wheels are now in motion" for me on it is all & it's really started to show (practical DDoS of hpHosts between my app & 1 other, so moving to AMAZON "Un-DDoS'able" servers was paramount).
Still - I couldn't have done it MINUS using /. as a "p.r. platform" really & the 'geeks/nerds' (fellow ones, proud to be considered one actually - funniest part is? I am NOW the GUY I WOULD HAVE LAUGHED @ 25++ yrs. ago - stupid, this is a BETTER way of life!)

P.S.=> On your reply? You have a point: I used to "idolize" various figures in my time (e.g. - In sports, I was a lettering NCAA athlete in the sport of Lacrosse for a national champ decades ago in that period in my life) yet I have my "tech heros" too!
STILL - you find out they're MORTAL men (with foibles), but it's good to see there are GOOD men out there (especially in a world full of corruption in politics & industry etc. - et al) - they're inspiring, & *may* occasionally "slip up" but the mark of "great ones" are ones that can pick themselves up off the floor, especially in times of adversity, & do it again (+ even better than before especially)
... apk
And I say "fiscal", because I don't ever think this will ever make sense commercially. Prove me wrong. But until then (5000 years from now), it's going to be governments who would need to fund such efforts. And give out contracts to their friends. As long as the research into space travels adapts well to military application of the same technologies.
I posted about Mr. Musk before the person you replied to, here http://science.slashdot.org/co...
APK
P.S.=> What I find to be great for him lately, particularly, is his greatest feat in a way, in business (others mentioned other of his accomplishments, ala Space X)?
He has CAR DEALERSHIPS "on the run", doing the ONLY thing they KNOW how to apparently:
E.G.-> Bribery, other forms of coersion, to political figures etc. - et al
(I.E.-> All the 'great things' (not) men are capable of when threatened, especially the wealthy for fear of their "money tree" being chopped down - especially when it's inferior)
That, takes some doing - "fighting the power" is 1 thing, & essentially "sticking it to the man", but winning that race/battle? It's QUITE another - & imo? HE is - their reactions show it... apk
It was predicted ages ago!

Musk is just trying to escape US and South Africa taxation systems and the butt-zillions he owes each.
Ha ha
I'm thinking that a good first step would be something a little closer like, I dunno, that big whiteish thing that we can see in the sky at night... what's that forgotten thing called again?...
It takes 60 days for a seller on ebay to get paid. By then the seller is probably in default, possibly homeless, and yet paypal can keep YOUR money for 60 days and collect interest on it.
But Elon Musk has a spaceship!
Building a spaceport in Brownsville is a brilliant idea. Presumably it will save a lot on rocket fuel, as rockets will take off by sheer force of will just to get the fuck out of Brownsville.
When it is completed, the Clinton administration will seize it and convert it for housing "temporarily undocumented immigrants". Brownsville will become the preferred entry point for all those entering the United States who "lost" their paperwork.

Many CEOs have emergency plans for a retirement out of reach from shareholder class action suits, but this seems a bit excessive.
