DNA On Pizza Crust Leads To Quadruple Murder Suspect

HughPickens.com writes: In a case straight out of CSI, CNN reports that police are searching for the man suspected in the gruesome slayings of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper, after his DNA was purportedly found on a pizza crust at the scene of the quadruple murders. They discovered his DNA on the crust of a Domino's pizza — one of two delivered to the Savopoulos home May 14 as the family was held hostage inside — a source familiar with the investigation said. The pizza apparently was paid for with cash left in an envelope on the porch. The next morning, Savvas Savopoulos's personal assistant dropped off a package containing $40,000 in cash at the home, according to the officials and police documents.

The bodies of Savopoulos, along with his wife, Amy, their 10-year-old son Philip and the family's housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, were discovered the afternoon of May 14 after firefighters responded to reports of a fire. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the killings are likely not a random crime and police have issued an arrest warrant for the 34-year-old Daron Dylon Wint, who is described as 5'7 and 155 lbs and might also go by the name "Steffon." Wint apparently used to work at American Iron Works, where Savvas Savopoulos was CEO and president. The neighborhood is home to numerous embassies and diplomatic mansions as well as the official residence of Vice President Joe Biden and his wife. "Right now you have just about every law enforcement officer across the country aware of his open warrant and are looking for him," says Lanier. "I think even his family has made pleas for him to turn himself in."

If you click on the first link in the story it says that the suspect has been arrested.

However at the time the story was submitted (May 20, 7:20 pm CST) the suspect had not yet been apprehended. Same link, different story.

This is something I have seen news operations do before that I really don't agree with. They keep the same URL but they change the content of the story.

If a news organization changes the content of the story I think they should put an "UPDATE" at the end of the original story to reflect the changes. The NY Times does this when they make a correction or an update to a story.

Another alternative is to issue an entirely new story with a new headline and a new URL and keep the original story and URL archived for historical purposes.

One thing that I like about Wikipedia is that you can go back and look at the history of an article to see when changes are made and find out how the article looked at any specific date. I wish news organizations would use a similar methodology to track changes they make to stories.

I hope you're not an NY pizza lover. Those things are terrible. I always wondered why New Yorkers fold their pizza. It's because their local pizzerias produce floppy, barely-held-together messes.

The best pizza I ever had was in Canada. I can't really describe the style. It was from a wood-fired oven, but they used by thicker slices of tomato and such.

Say what you like, but it certainly seems clear to me that progress in criminal investigations happens much faster when moneyed or attractive people are involved. Like Atlanta police managing to capture a serial killer days after he shot a white woman, but months after he shot a bunch of homeless guys.

In DC, where 2/3 killings goes unsolved, where DNA testing was suspend last month over 'inadequate' procedures, and where 15-20% of open cases have untested DNA evidence, they manage to test and return results from a pizza in under a week and arrest the suspect the next day.

Seriously, if you think police apply exactly the same resources and intensity to the killing of Joe Biden's neighbor as to multiple kidnappings in Tremont, you're being naive.

Unlike the poster above I don't think it is due to something innate in being black. There are plenty of majority places in the Caribbean, Africa and the Americas in which the crime rate is low and normal.

There are other factors involved - oh, maybe, single-parent homes; a society which hits people with a triple-whammy: expect nothing; provide a subsistence and degrading handout; and provide incentives to not have two-parent households.

Income inequality if the largest driver of murders. Homicide has a r=0.8 correlation with income inequality.. 10% of whites are in poverty in the USA, but 27% of blacks are in poverty. Poverty (income inequality), crime, and race are all related in the USA. That's not good, but it does open options because there are a lot more levers available to pull. Reduce minority poverty, and minority crime will probably drop too. There are lots of ways to do that, but it takes a huge effort to do so.

So what do you propose? Use government power to force minority mothers to marry, and to force the fathers or children to stay at home, become educated, and care enough to raise children who will actually attend school? Are you saying that a kid who is born into a household with one young, under-educated parent is going to be starting out life with that disadvantage because other people aren't poor? Do you really think that places like Baltimore, which spend way above average per student on education, and have an endless parade of subsidies and programs to provide resources to people in poverty ... just need to have the government do more than is already being done?

The problem is cultural. Persistent poverty in the worst parts of Appalachia, or in west Baltimore, don't exist because other people are prosperous. That entire meme is just SJW hand-wringing BS. Of course police should apply more resources to high profile cases and areas where violent crimes are more rare.

My safe neighborhood, with zero murders ever, pays as much (or more) into the police budget as a violent neighborhood that has multiple murders a year.

If God forbid we do one day have a murder, I would expect cops to be all over that shit. We should be a much higher priority than the violent neighborhood because we've earned that priority.

That said, cops are largely idiots when it comes to dealing with problem areas. I don't know why they tolerate them so much, except the cynical view that they are more interested in making money than stopping crime. A great example is prostitution... why are they the clients of prostitutes? To make money. If they wanted to end coercive prostitution, they would do this:
1. Hire a prostitute
2. "Do it"
3. Refuse to pay
4. Wait for the enforcer/pimp/whoever to show up and make a threat
5. Shoot him (or arrest him)

There are far fewer pimps than prostitutes and clients. So attacking the pimps is the logical way to end it.

Instead their sting operations are to arrest the guys who DO pay as they're supposed to. WTF??

They could do something similar with drugs:
1. Buy drugs
2. Refuse to pay
3. Keep doing that
4. Wait for core violent element of the gang to come attack
5. Shoot them (or arrest them)

But nah, they'd rather set up a sting and arrest a couple users, or maybe a dealer so they can confiscate his property... pretty ridiculous.

That study wasn't comparing income inequality to other drivers of murder so it's not evidence that it's the largest driver. Also the conclusion says:

So maybe countries with high homicide rates result in a breakdown of social trust, and that lack of trust results in lack of investment and achievement among certain groups, leading to higher income inequality.

Martinique has the lowest rate, with 4.2 per 100k. However, it's only 300k people, compared with 2.7 million in Jamaica (the highest murder rate), so I'm not sure it makes much difference to the overall crime rate in the Caribbean.

That's interesting. I will have to look at this more carefully. I know people from the Caribbean - Grenada and other places. There was a murder in Grenada the other year and EVERYONE (the expats here in NYC) were talking about it because it was so unusual. The whole island is like a series of small towns. Homes aren't locked. It's described as "old-fashioned" small-town country life.

It's true that there are concerns that the drug-trade is coming to with its violence.

That's interesting. I have no idea what the overall statistics are, but the most disturbing prostitution stories (to me) generally involve pimps. There was a good episode of "Vice News" about prostitution and they told the stories of girls who were being manipulated emotionally by pimps, and occasionally hooked on drugs or beaten... but mostly emotional manipulation and financial threats (kicking them out).

To me that's the bad part of prostitution. I'm not sure legalizing it would make it much better... you're still going to have very damaged girls engaging in it, even if it's legal. Who wants to be a prostitute after all?

And yes, of course, that same cycle can apply to white people, but, come on. Initial conditions in the 1970s. A far greater percentage of blacks are poor than whites. The poor person's neighborhood will be patrolled with suspicion more often than the middle and upper class neighborhoods, meaning the poor person is more likely to be caught. Undoubtedly a poor person will come out of the justice system with harsher punishments for the same crime. Combine this with the institutional racism of harsher punishments for "black" crimes than "white" crimes (like 5 years for selling crack vs 2 years for selling cocaine) and the actual racism of some police/prosecutors/judges/jurors, and apply that system over 40 years, and there you have it.

I think it will get better, as prohibition is on its way out. States are falling like dominoes to legalize or decriminalize marijuana and probably eventually other drugs. Still an uphill battle, though. I explained this reasoning to my Republican Boomer parents and they agreed with my logic, but still wanted drugs illegal because, and I shit you not, "if the black people can't sell drugs to make money, what else will they do? Rob people, that's what!" I was at a loss for words to argue with that kind of logic.

Not because there is no prospect for a comfortable life in the world, but because those prospects are being squashed by the local culture. In some cases, that culture is no larger than the single parent. Or it might be the size of a multi-generational household. Or a whole city block. Or an entire nation-state. But it's cultural, pure and simple.

In order to avoid having to give up on your moral relativism and turn in your PC/SJW card, you'll pretend that you just read someone talking about skin color. The fact that you so reflexively resort to that perspective in order to avoid talking about the real problem is, ironically, a stellar display of either disingenuous, craven intellectual dishonesty (or just a juvenile lack of rhetorical skills) on your part, or the sign of someone who really hasn't thought this through.

Ah, an "addressor" in our midst. Say what you, mean. Tear down people who have something so you can spread it around, right? No. Places like west Baltimore are saturated in lavish education spending, free or heavily subsidized transportation (and walkable blocks from places without even needing it), awash in grant money that's just looking for ways to turn abandoned properties into livable homes and viable businesses, and it's been run by people at the legislative and executive levels (since you're so obsessed with this) roughly the same color as those who live there. Health and legal expenses? Covered by taxpayer-funded medical care and legal clinics where you can hear the crickets chirping for lack of interest in use other than when someone's arrested for street crime.

We've been "addressing" those issues, lavishly, for decades. Miles away, there's prosperity. In that spot? People living in fear of the local street gangs and those squatting in abandoned homes and businesses. Why? Because the members of those gangs, the thugs who make that area intolerable as a place to live or run a business, have safe haven, culturally, in the households in which they were so passively raised. Ask the people who live there, and they'll tell you that's exactly the problem. "Addressing" that problem means (ready?) not tolerating the crime. And that means police presence and activity. But we're being told, by the president no less, that what's really needed is a less visible and active police force. And indeed, the police in that area have dialed it way back in the last few weeks ... and surprise! The violence level, including murder on the street, has surged hugely.

Just what you look for when deciding where to build your next fire-proof retail store, right?

Abusive pimps and johns would quickly find themselves in jail as sex workers are able to go to the police and report crimes against them. The need for pimps would also decrease as likeminded sex workers could form houses of business with security personnel. Or others make clients go through more thorough screening while they work as private contractors.

It would also be harder to spread disease as you could make licensed sex workers go through regular STD screening.

You could also put a vice tax on services similar to alcohol or tobacco.

Your first scenario is not permissible (the "Do it" part is proscribed); a cop can't have sex to make an arrest, nor could the department legally require officers to have sex as part of their job.

The second scenario is plausible except that you assume that the LEOs have as much or more "firepower" than the gangs. In fact some kinds of crime pay so well that law enforcement is way over their heads trying to fight back. Maybe not so bad as what's going on in Mexico but bad enough. For example, http://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RB9770.html suggests that the combined spending on the four drugs {marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine} is about $100 billion USD per year; more than half that figure remains even if you remove marijuana from the list. Compare that to the total federal law enforcement budget of about $28 billion https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2012/assets/justice.pdf which covers the whole gamut of criminality, not just drug sales. OK, stop the "war on drugs" and the cost will drop to zero. Organized crime (gangs) will just move on to a different lucrative area, whatever brings in the cash.

New York City's police budget, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Police_Department is $4.8 billion and it covers everything from jaywalking to terrorist bombers. Police Commissioner Bratton can't even get the mayor to hire an additional 1,000 cops because the money just isn't in the budget.

Furthermore, LEO has to "play by the rules" when going after criminals; the gangs don't have to play fair, so they don't have to waste their resources doing things that don't benefit their illegal activities.

It would make a cool movie though :-)

Scenario #1: The pimp won't show up to threaten the cop (playing a deadbeat john). What will happen is that the pimp will beat up or kill the prostitute for not bringing home the money.

True but I'm assuming the entire gang isn't going to show up for every incident (unless it's quite a small gang to begin with). Confronting a john who tries to hire an undercover cop as a prostitute poses little risk if the officer is armed. Little compared to waiting for the enforcer anyway. Busting a guy trying to buy weed is little risk compared to setting up a sting with a big gang and showing up in your MRAP and getting into a fire fight. Is it worth risking your life to put a negligible dent in the drug trade or the sex trade? Maybe not.

Statistically, that "cow" (ground beef) would be from ~200 cows. Sausage could be as few as one, but much more likely to be just as "processed" as the cow. Ham or Canadian Bacon might be from a single animal, but I seriously doubt Dominion's uses anything from the "quality" side of the market. The chicken is the only thing likely to have been from a single chicken -- unless they used "McNuggets", which is entirely possible. ("mechanically separated" is the term used.)

Those shows should be watched and shown as part of grade school curriculum. It's important for people to know what they are eating and to know what their alternatives are besides going to buy Factory Farmed Meats at Supermarkets. Even buying a joint of meat at Safeway comes with so much crap that it's not much better than processed.

Until people start caring about the quality of their foods, we will continue on this race to the bottom -- the Average American already eats on par with a pig anyway with all the processed crap made from fillers and byproducts. All that's needed is for Americans to ditch table dining for a troft.

Yes genetic variance between individuals of the same race dwarfs variance between races. Everyone really is a unique special snowflake especially when environmental and tribal conformity is excluded from the equation.

Are you familiar with any details of this story, or do you just like complaining about stupid things? A child was tortured in front of his parents, to extort money. Then when they got the money, they killed the child anyway, and his parents and their housekeeper. I'm not trying to minimize how terrible and sad this really is, it's an awful situation. This doesn't quite add up, though it may just be sloppy reporting. The pizza was delivered on May 14th. The next morning, ostensibly the 15th, the assistant drops off $40,000. But the bodies were found on the afternoon of the 14th in a burned out house? And DNA was preserved through a fire on a piece of pizza crust? It seems more likely that the pizza was delivered on the 13th. Otherwise the assistant would have delivered the cash to a burned down house.

Running from the law is a crime. Just as resisting arrest is a crime.

Although rather absurdly you can be arrested with "resisting arrest" being your only charge, meaning that you're guilty of not wanting to be arrested for no crime whatsoever?

Because it's not legal to contest illegal or erroneous arrests by physically resisting them. It's legal to contest them by pleading not guilty or by negotiating to get the charges dropped. It's also legal to sue the ass of the cop who arrested you.

Interesting. That would not have occurred to me either. I originally came to reply to GP that maybe this whole media stunt is related to an NSA parallel construction job.
I mean, the pizza baker (post oven) must have been cleared in advance with some police cooperation before taking this public to avoid a big goof...

How much other routine stuff was done between crime time and media time that the public is talking for granted?
