Snowden Says It's Your Duty To Use an Ad Blocker (for Security)
AmiMoJo writes: In a long interview about reclaiming your privacy online, ex-NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden states that it's not just a good idea to use ad blocking software, it's your duty: "Everybody should be running adblock software, if only from a safety perspective. We've seen internet providers like Comcast, AT&T, or whoever it is, insert their own ads into your plaintext http connections. As long as service providers are serving ads with active content that require the use of JavaScript to display, that have some kind of active content like Flash embedded in it, anything that can be a vector for attack in your web browser — you should be actively trying to block these. Because if the service provider is not working to protect the sanctity of the relationship between reader and publisher, you have not just a right but a duty to take every effort to protect yourself in response." Other recommendations include encrypting your hard drive and using Tor to keep your internet use private.
I think APK might disagree with you, sir.
at least one person thinks I'm not a bad person because I don't want to see flashing ads and videos while I am trying to read a story.
A brain is a terrible thing to waste... Mind? That's debatable.
running an adblocker is almost like running an antivirus...
Be or ben't
I don't want to kill the funding of my favorite sites by blocking advertisements.
But my $BROWSER has SANDBOXING! It means it's completely INVULNERABLE! Arf! Arf!
Seriously: dear web designer: if your page/ad/whatever is Javascript-o nly, I won't see it. Period.
If your ad is flash, ditto.
I'd rather have half of the Intratubes go dark for me (probably the more unpleasant half, but how would I know?) than allowing random stuff from the Intratubes being executed in my box.
Now if the boneheads at Mozilla understood that, they'd be again my friends.
is better. You get a nice list of associated domains that allow you to trivially block the extra domains (and believe me, there are bloody loads where you won't expect). A pleasant side effect is your browsing experience will speed up over time, as it learns to ignore more skanky sites and leave less intrusive crap to deal with.
Worrying about some website not getting ad revenue is a waste of brain cells. On the whole, very few people block ads. This may be different for purely technical sites, but on the main, few do, so all of this pouting and posturing by site owners and ad companies is just that, posturing. Protecting your computer is far more important than someone getting .0001 because you stumbled through their website.
I agree that blocking ads, beacons, cookies, and trackers is an imperative much more than a few years ago. It's even more important on mobile devices. I'm pleased that Apple has Wi-Fi security built in, meaning that whilst you walk around, your MAC address is not visible unless you CHOOSE to connect to a given network. Android devices still broadcast their MAC address if Wi-Fi is enabled, connected or not.
I concur, and I run adblockers primarily for this reason. At present, malicious ads/malicious content delivered through ad networks is probably the most likely thing to infect the average user, and there's no more effective defense than simply blocking the content.
Why block it? Why block random content from unknown third parties, coming across content networks that have proven, time and again, that they don't give a rat's ass about vetting the people they're selling ad space to, let alone the content that those people are sending - and we're not even getting into all the constant invasive tracking attempts that come with that.
I don't mind reasonable ads, especially native ones that belong to the page I'm actually visiting. I mind the fact that there's been no real consequences for the rampant bad or negligent behavior on the part of the ad networks - so, like all content that I view as inherently suspicious/possibly malicious, I'm going to block it by default. The fact that there's no real value to me in it just makes it easier to not worry about that.
Once again Mr Snowden hits the nail on the head.. I just wish there was an ad blocker that worked as well as uBlock for TV and radio, but alas there isn't, so I suffer there...
THANK YOU, Edward Snowden!! Americans owe you a debt of gratitude (whether they know it or not..)
But but.. The FBI hacked Tor.

NSA Uses Google Cookies to Pinpoint Targets for Hacking
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/12/10/nsa-uses-google-cookies-to-pinpoint-targets-for-hacking
By Ashkan Soltani, Andrea Peterson, and Barton Gellman
December 10, 2013
The National Security Agency is secretly piggybacking on the tools that enable Internet advertisers to track consumers, using "cookies" and location data to pinpoint targets for government hacking and to bolster surveillance.
The agency's internal presentation slides, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, show that when companies follow consumers on the Internet to better serve them advertising, the technique opens the door for similar tracking by the government. The slides also suggest that the agency is using these tracking techniques to help identify targets for offensive hacking operations.
For years, privacy advocates have raised concerns about the use of commercial tracking tools to identify and target consumers with advertisements. The online ad industry has said its practices are innocuous and benefit consumers by serving them ads that are more likely to be of interest to them.
The revelation that the NSA is piggybacking on these commercial technologies could shift that debate, handing privacy advocates a new argument for reining in commercial surveillance.
According to the documents, the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ, are using the small tracking files or "cookies" that advertising networks place on computers to identify people browsing the Internet. The intelligence agencies have found particular use for a part of a Google-specific tracking mechanism known as the “PREF” cookie. These cookies typically don't contain personal information, such as someone's name or e-mail address, but they do contain numeric codes that enable Web sites to uniquely identify a person's browser.
In addition to tracking Web visits, this cookie allows NSA to single out an individual's communications among the sea of Internet data in order to send out software that can hack that person's computer. The slides say the cookies are used to "enable remote exploitation," although the specific attacks used by the NSA against targets are not addressed in these documents.
The NSA's use of cookies isn't a technique for sifting through vast amounts of information to find suspicious behavior; rather, it lets NSA home in on someone already under suspicion - akin to when soldiers shine laser pointers on a target to identify it for laser-guided bombs.
Separately, the NSA is also using commercially gathered information to help it locate mobile devices around the world, the documents show. Many smartphone apps running on iPhones and Android devices, and the Apple and Google operating systems themselves, track the location of each device, often without a clear warning to the phone's owner. This information is more specific than the broader location data the government is collecting from cellular phone networks, as reported by the Post last week.
"On a macro level, 'we need to track everyone everywhere for advertising' translates into 'the government being able to track everyone everywhere,'" says Chris Hoofnagle, a lecturer in residence at UC Berkeley Law. "It's hard to avoid."
These specific slides do not indicate how the NSA obtains Google PREF cookies or whether the company cooperates in these programs, but other documents reviewed by the Post indicate that cookie information is among the data NSA can obtain with a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act order. If the NSA gets the data that way, the companies know and are legally compelled to assist.
The NSA declined to comment on the specific tactics outlined in this story, but an NSA spokesman sent the Post a statement: "As we've said before, NSA, within its lawful mission to collect foreign intelligence to protect the Un
Javascript has been a necessary component of almost every browser exploit over the last decade. Blocking javascript is one of the most effective ways to stop attacks in their tracks and unlike ad-blockers it also protects against the case of a site itself being compromised and made to serve up exploits directly.
Web devs take note -- NoScript is essentially tied for 4th most popular firefox extension. If you aren't using some form of progressive enhancement to make sure your website's core functions work without javascript then you are putting your users at risk.
... making excuses for for ad blockers:
and when someone points out his stupidity:
Even Mozilla has this stupid mindset WRT Do Not Track:
Absolutely. I don't block ads, but ads get blocked, because my browser security package (noscript+requestpolicy) just doesn't load anything from a 3rd party site unless I approve it, and then doesn't run javascript unless I approve it.
Its generally a bit annoying but.... I put up with it for the same reason I wouldn't have sex with someone I just met without condoms. However, that isn't really even an apt comparison....because sex with a random person is, mostly a pretty rare event, even if you are trying.
Browsing the web is like.... if we replaced the social custom of saying "hello" with anal sex, and browsing a website is like going to a dinner party with your friend, and 20 of his friends that he brought along; and they are all anxious to greet you, and quite offended that you even brought up the word condom.
"I opened my eyes, and everything went dark again"
I'm on a capped data plan and every time one of those auto-playing video ads starts in 4K resolution (despite being just a small box on the page), I lose a couple hundred MB of data.
So, I use AdBlock, FlashBlock, Ghostery, and a few others, just in an effort to prevent the 2 Kbytes of information I want to read consuming 200MB of my data plan.
Here's my carefully thought-out response to being accused of short-changing the advertisers: I just don't give a damn.
You actually believe that? Your username is ironic here
I do it because even without Flash, the ads are now javascript + canvas + video + audio + animation.
1. My bandwidth is limited, I only have a 5 Mbps connection. And at the rates the only ISP in town has, I'm not interested in paying for a higher speed.
2. I have a monthly data quota which is below 50GB. Again, we only have one ISP in town so I'm stuck with them.
3. I have an older computer with a Core 2 Duo CPU. When there's a few ads using javascript, canvas, etc. it slows down my browsing and takes seconds before a page becomes responsive enough to be able to scroll it.
4. Using Activity Monitor, I see my CPU usage spike up when there's ads. Without ads I'm averaging about 5% CPU usage. With ads it can go to 50~80%.
Non-static ads cost me bandwidth and electricity, they slow down my browsing and my computer and they just plain fucking annoy me while trying to shove their unwanted products in my face.
We also have those "hover your mouse cursor to expand" ads, which means you can't even leave your cursor anywhere now, you have to move it to the right to make sure you won't trigger those damn things.
Instead of trying to data-mine every single fucking website we visit, which inevitably gives them false data - I don't care about product category XYZ, I only viewed a website once because I was looking for something not related to category XYZ - how about letting us tell you what we're interested in?
You must be new here.
Perhaps he is really laughingtroll, rather than laughingskeptic.
Score: clueless moron
3) Sanitize ads and pay for cleanup if they deliver malware.
See I'm not willing to even take a chance on the malware delivery. If there is even a remote chance of malware delivery then their ad will remain blocked until the end of time. I don't care if they are willing to pay for cleanup or not.
Because the sad fact is that I was willing to put up with annoying, but I am NOT willing to put up with security risk
You are more generous than I am. I'm not willing to put up with annoying OR with a security risk OR with tracking. If they want to pay me with cold hard cash, then and only then will I consider the limited circumstances under which I'm willing to be watched. Under no circumstances will I countenance a security risk or any irritation from advertisements.
I use Adblock + with Firefox. I have used it since it became available, and I will continue to use it. We are constantly assaulted by hucksters in all the media, electronic and print. ENOUGH! NO MORE!
two of the biggest attack surfaces closed.
I think some updates have removed read write ability on my hosts file.
Windows Defender in Windows 8 and later treats .../etc/hosts as a protected file because some malware has operated by redirecting facebook.com to a phishing site. If you want to manage the hosts file yourself, exclude it from Windows Defender.
But hosts files do have other disadvantages. For one thing, the syntax doesn't allow wildcards or explicit NXDOMAIN. For another, most operating systems' built-in resolvers use an inefficient linear scan for every resolve call rather than loading the file into an efficient data structure such as a Bloom filter, and they don't allow each of a machine's users to maintain a separate blocking list. Finally, iOS and Android don't even let the user edit the file at all unless the user wipes and roots the device and voids its warranty.
Also, his stuff is free.
APK Hosts File Engine is not free software. It's proprietary, and APK intends to keep it that way. When I told him that proprietary software inherently has strings attached, here's what he said, with cleaned-up formatting:
So it's not the best choice for someone who is switching to free applications in preparation for switching to a free operating system.
Assuming the author is male constitutes a microagression.
If that's the first microaggression, it'll take 999,999 more of them before there's even one real problem.
Anyway, a more reasonable person uses hosts files when they are the correct tool for the job, frequently combining them with a good ad blocker in order to gain the multiple layers that good security demands.
APK agrees that hosts files are only one component in a layered security strategy. Eight years ago, he wrote a detailed article about the other layers.
Apart from Wikipedia, free works other than software haven't caught on to nearly the same extent as free software. Even video games tend to be non-free because there's so much to a video game other than software.
Well, if they server their own ads, fine
How should a smaller web site go about seeking advertisers if its operator wants to stop sucking on the AdSense tit? This article recommends the equivalent of leaving "Your ad here" banners, but "if you build it, they will come" doesn't pay the domain, hosting, and certificate costs, let alone feed and house the writers. How should a site's operator even know what to charge?
How would a real-time chat application or collaborative whiteboard "gracefully degrade" without scripts and without Flash? All I can think of is "read-only, press Ctrl+R to refresh". And how would a game such as Pirates Love Daisies or Cookie Clicker gracefully degrade? By providing native versions for fourteen different platforms?
Done.
What makes you think that anyone maintaining a scorched-Earth policy with respect to JavaScript gives a flying fritatta about any of those things?
You aren't viewing just one site you are viewing every site that site has ever crosslinked with.
It really doesn't help when you want to support a site by adding some exceptions and the cross link list has a @#%@%^ scroll bar. Oh hey you want me to let you cross link to what 30+ other sites ..... yeah uh... no.
That isn't even getting into the obnoxious adds that pretty much kill your desire to even attempt to go about figuring what in that spaghetti list of cross links will actually get them some revenue. I flat gave up whitelisting one of my favorite sites because even tho I ultimately decided I liked them enough to risk dealing with their third party ad partners. Within a week of whitelisting them I'd start getting half screen video ads that PURPOSEFULLY blocked their close button so even tho there was in theory a way to close the video while it was playing you had about a quarter second to hit it while the movie was maximizing before it shoved it out of frame until it minimized again. More frequently resulting in a click through than actually closing the damn thing. Miss that window and you can try again in ~2min when the video finished...... nope.avi
I have no problem with ads if they can meet to criteria, security and not being obnoxious. Thus far they fail on both aspects and instead of addressing those, choose to blame the consumers for blocking their obnoxious potential vectors.
It reminds me of TV/movie piracy. I waited a long time for them to sell me non-DRMed files. Many people pirated; I abstained. But years went by without them ever opening for business, presumably because my money wasn't of use to them.
Eventually I gave up on waiting, and now all my TV and movies are pirated.
It's easy, automatic and hassle-free. It's the always high-bitrate regardless of whatever else my internet connection is being used for, unlike streaming (which I once might have settled for, had they standardized it). It's ad-free. It always works, and I can watch it on any computer with whatever software is currently my favorite. It's nearly perfect, the only defect being that they don't get paid.
That one last point is less than ideal. That's not how I wanted it to go. It didn't have to be that way, and it still doesn't have to be that way. But if they ever do seriously open for business (start selling the files) would I go back? Seven years ago I would have; four years ago I seriously might have. But I'm used to how things are now. They have inertia as their lame-ass excuse, but some day they might finally come to the table with a serious offer, and then maybe inertia will be my lame-ass excuse. Or not. I don't know, but every year that goes by without them even trying only further solidifies my piracy habits, occasionally teaching someone else how, and the tools' developers just keep making things even better. The sooner the video business comes to market, the better their chances. The longer they wait, the lower their chances.
But their best chances are with the people who haven't yet stormed off in disgust.
The ad industry has the same thing going on, and they need to stop the exodus ASAP. Every ad blocker installed is someone giving up on them, perhaps forever, but at the minimum, the uphill battle to win them back will only get steeper with each passing year.
They might not get people to come back, but they still get to decide whether or not more people leave. Not everyone is at the same level of fed-up-ness, just like how some people are still trying to work with the TV/movie industry. Cherish those people and figure out how to keep them.
It will become your problem once more and more of the sites on which you rely make the decision to "charge membership" or "starve and close your website".
He might prefer paying in cash than with his privacy; then this change is not a problem but rather an improvement. You could argue that the walling-off approach would reserve important content for rich people, but then it is the seller's fault who fails to extract money from his visitors in a proportional manner. Rather than walling off the content you could use the "tip jar" already mentioned. It works for some people. I do not belive in limiting ones audience, I believe it to be counterproductive.
I wonder: How could an online whiteboard or browser game work without JavaScript?
They would not. They are a required for that kind of interaction. Displaying static text however, does not. It is either really bad web engineering or intentional degradation. Both of these lowers the value of your content for me, as it requires me to jump through hoops to selectively enable content on your site. Unless you offer something truly unique, I will go elsewhere. It is called competition.
Again, we only have one ISP in town
FlyHelicopters, Bengie, and Zero__Kelvin might reply that there are other towns.
I don't care about product category XYZ, I only viewed a website once because I was looking for something not related to category XYZ - how about letting us tell you what we're interested in?
So would you be happy if every single website put up a survey wall in order to read more than one article in a month?
You could argue that the walling-off approach would reserve important content for rich people, but then it is the seller's fault who fails to extract money from his visitors in a proportional manner.
How would the seller determine what is "proportional" without tracking visitors across websites to obtain evidence of their likely income?
Rather than walling off the content you could use the "tip jar" already mentioned. It works for some people.
And not for others.
It is only libel if it isn't true. Are you ready to submit to a psych eval to prove us wrong?
Indeed, the truth will set you free, admitting you have problems is the first step in correcting the problems.

Pretty bad I'd wager, considering you STUCK YOUR FOOT IN YOUR MOUTH AGAIN, ramming them down your throat spiced & washed down w/ "the bitter taste of SELF-defeat" to me yet again - you did it to yourself (just like your enumerated 'fails' list vs. myself I put out here full of lies, libel, & other reprehensible crap from you directed my way I easily disproved... lol, but nobody ever technically validly disproves my points on hosts though, including you, lol!)... apk
Therefore I don't need javascript allowed over the internet at all.
And not only that, but ad blocker doesn't need to block and disable all javascript.
So you ALWAYS go this far out of your way to make up the most pitiful excuse for allowing every javascript moron site to hijack my computer?
What would you think if I hacked into your B2B computer and took up processing to do a bit of SETI at home or something? You'd be pissed off, right? Then why do you think it fine to hijack MY computer. Not just fine, but HIGHLY immoral for anyone to not want you to do it? If you want to use my computing resources, feel free to ask permission and get ready to pay.
See subject:... for his indigestion & malnutrition "eating his words" vs. me http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... YET AGAIN, lol...

Top that off w/ his enumerated 'greatest hits fail list' I posted here as well? Come on, lol!
(He needs the help... his continued trolling, fails, & butthurt 'signatures' project he has issues, along w/ the FACT he is the mentally abnormal one w/ his 'delicate condition' in 'assburgers & outism', not I... lmao!)
He came in here sowing the wind trolling me yet again or talking about me when I wasn't even here to see it?
Wel - ok:
Now, he's reaping the whirlwind & it's hilariously easy for me to do - he provided the ammo for it.

To be infected? YOU HAVE TO CATCH IT 1st - my program lastly prevents via a simple principle:
You can't be hurt by what you can't touch & it can't touch you either!
APK
P.S.=> It's more work (probably impossible for typical end users) to create firewall rules in Windows (especially if based on host-domain name, Windows native firewall uses IP addresses NOT host-domain names (which my program gets from 10 reputable security community sources) AND IP addresses are BY FAR less used vs. host/domain names (fastfluxing is why in botnets/malware - makes it hard to pin down & destroy simply by moving it to another dirty hosting provider).
Plus - most common end users don't know about reverse DNS pinging (which my program does for them by the way) to convert host-domain names to IP addresses for firewall use in Windows... apk

How would the seller determine what is "proportional" without tracking visitors across websites to obtain evidence of their likely income?
You shouldn't even demand to know people's earnings. If you offer the basic content to everyone for free or with non-tracking, non-invasive ads you can then add premium content like removing the ads, early access, bonus content etc. Sites like channelawesome.com (of Nostalgia Critic fame) offers this premium membership model (but still has crappy ads).
If you want people to consume your content, do not make it harder for them to do so. The media industry did this to the extent that even senior citizens learned how to use Bittorrent; it was still easier than the legal alternatives. The game changer here was Spotify, it stopped even die-hard pirates because it was less of a hassle.
Things should become simpler and cheaper, not the other way around. I have never spent so much on computer games in total since Steam arrived, because the prices are lower. I am now moving over to GOG and Humble Store. Because they offer DRM-free stuff. It costs more, but I value my privacy. Still cheap though, since I buy older games (because of the DRM-free requirements).

I never doubted that a good hosts file is useful. I have used one myself since about nineteen or twenty years ago when I first discovered Linux. At that time, I was unaware of any good browser add-ons for blocking ads, though I did use the Junkbuster proxy (a local filtering HTTP proxy). I could be wrong but I believe this was before your program existed, or at least before you promoted it by spamming Slashdot.
The only real differences between your advice and mine: I only give mine when either directly asked, or when blocking advertisements is relevant to the discussion; and for me this is not a religious issue. I don't invest my concepts of self-worth or self-esteem into methods of blocking unwanted sites. I use multiple overlapping tools to get the combined benefits of each.
I find the performance of my system (including my browser) to be more than acceptable and I like the experience I have when using it. I also accept that someone else might have different goals and might be more satisfied with a different setup. I can accept that because it's supported by real-world observation and because again, this isn't a religious issue for me. I have no need to win converts and I don't care about treating others as heretics. It's called emotional security, and it's at least as important as host security. For me the important thing is that we all have the ability to customize things as we please.
I'm glad you are getting positive feedback about your hosts program. It sounds like those users are pleased with you, and to that degree you've done them a nice service. I just wish you'd grow up a little. That's all. If you need to hate me for saying that, I understand, but I hope you don't.

Actually I clearly said "in my opinion". It's right there in the first part of the first paragraph, in case your reading comprehension has failed. I also said "I believe he may have" followed by ".. should find a qualified therapist". Libel doesn't apply to opinions, but of course you already knew that. You just enjoy raising a stink when you know you're cornered.
Isn't it funny how nothing in your reply actually rebuts any part of my post? You falsely cry about libel when I was giving a clearly labeled opinion, you call me a worm, and you quote the Bible. You haven't replied to a word I said, not really. If you're afraid to do so, I understand. This is how most childish people react when they know someone else is right but they can't stand it. Oh, and if I thought I were a shrink, I would have provided something more than my personal opinion. I didn't do that. Instead, I said you should FIND a qualified therapist. That way someone who really is a shrink can diagnose you.
If you're too cowardly to actually tell me what I said that was wrong, that's okay. It's what I expected. You have only validated my expectations. I notice you aren't celebrating your "great victory" this time. You can't win them all, APK, and you clearly lost this time. Act like an adult and be a good sport. For once. Just to see how it feels.
Have a nice day!
While I agree with the sentiment, surely that same logic applies to all websites. Any random site could serve up malware at any time.
It could but advertisements have some extra bonus features that make them worth blocking. First, I haven't ever gone to a website looking for advertising. Any advertising that is present is at best a distraction that consumes my bandwidth. They serve no useful purpose to me. Second, most random websites do not attempt to track my activities outside of that site. If Facebook wants to know what I do on Facebook then that's fine. Facebook knowing what I am looking at on eBay is not acceptable. Third, there is the general obnoxiousness of the ads as well as the sense of entitlement by the folks serving them. Pop ups, pop overs, interstitials, huge banner ads, flash, etc. These things basically do nothing but cost me time and money to get rid of. Every once in a while I have to use a computer without ad blocking software and wow is it annoying. If they want to advertise to me, making increasingly obnoxious ads is not how to get my goodwill of make me pay attention to an ad. Fourth, most random websites take a little more care in what they display. They don't generally run random content from companies they aren't familiar with. Ads are a vector because no one is paying any attention to what is displayed.
Once you add on the security problems basically ad companies have dug their own grave as far as I'm concerned.

Your opinion doesn't make you qualified to judge others mental condition moron. Get over your delusion of grandeur you're a psychiatric pro.
Did you see the part where I recommended he find a therapist, that way "someone who really is a shrink can diagnose you"? It's right there in my post. Hard to miss. Did you somehow miss that part? Or do you not understand the concept of having a medical/mental health professional perform a diagnosis? It's pretty basic, you know. See, the point of saying that, is to recommend that someone who IS qualified to judge his mental condition does so. Inherent in that statement is the implication that I am not.
It's amusing but also pathetic the way you APK fanboys have to clutch at straws like this. Still waiting for anything I said to be rebuted... guess that's not likely to happen. If you could have, you would have by now.
Can ghostery do 16 things hosts do for speed, security, & reliability:
1.) Protect vs. malicious sites (past ads)
2.) Protect vs. fastflux botnets + stop talk to C&C servers
3.) Protect vs. dynamic dns botnets + stop talk to C&C servers
4.) Protect vs. DGA botnets + stop talk to C&C servers

13.) Speed up surfing by adblocks & hardcoded fav. sites
14.) Work on anything webbound multiplatform.
15.) Give you easily controlled data
16.) Block ads more efficiently in cpu + memory use vs. addons
* ANSWER ="NO" to each on Ghostery doing all or @ all + hosts = on devices natively.

P.S.=> Addons do FAR less than hosts do & FAR less efficiently - hosts by way of comparison, do MORE w/ less + Hosts start w/ the IP stack before REDUNDANT inefficient addons BEGIN to operate (as 1st resolver queried):
Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
---
Addons add complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).

It also reminded me how much time I must've spent over the years "debugging" Ad Blockers. It's far better to do wthout them if you can. I run 3 web browsers on my Mac. One of them (guess which it is), I run with Javascript turned off. It's fast and clean. I can always turn JS back on if I really need to for a particular web site. Alternatively I can simply switch to another browser with JS turned on if I want to handle it that way.

At least apk has us fanboys as you call us. You don't have fans. You haven't done anything worth being your fan for troll.
If the whole purpose of an ad is for website owner to make $$$ off alternative form of revenue and they know users will continue to come back to the site, then it seems these site owners have no intention on removing advertising (to help cover costs of smaller websites, or add profit potential to others). Since they don't plan on removing the ads, why can't I pay my service provider for it and they block it? If the advertising companies think they are entitled to this $$$ (which is a racket since they created advertising on web, tv, newspaper, big sign on side of road) then they do not plan on decreasing the advertising. If they want to cry to someone wheres their advertising $$$ due to people running a pop-up blocker, go talk to the FCC. If ISP's want to charge $5-10 bucks to ensure the end user gets 0 ads and that $ (or a tiny % of it makes its way back to advertisers) then maybe they will have reason to have an advertising flag on the site (so the ISP can easily block that traffic before it hits end user). I wouldn't mind paying few bucks more for no commercials on TV as well but that is another battle which again goes back to the FCC. I hate ads on websites, it ruins the whole experience if you ask me (especially the big intruding ones that completely block the whole reason you went to the site, or the ones that you click "Close Ad because it covers this page, and it still covers that portion of page after you try to close it." These ads are too intrusive. If i was watching a TV show on cable TV and a friggin ad came up blocking the whole show I would turn it off (bye bye ratings system....).
Ads need to be less intrusive, and would be nice for consumers to be able to "pay to opt out" which again is still shady Mafia tactics at play but seems these ads aren't going away so what is best answer for everyone to be happy???
