Young Climate Activists Sue Obama Over Climate Change Inaction (cnn.com)
EmagGeek writes A recent lawsuit against Obama alleges he has a legal duty to act against climate change, and young climate activists, including 15-year-old Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh, are taking him to task on it. CNN reports: "Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh became a climate change activist at age 6 when he saw an environmental documentary. He asked his mom to find a way for him to speak at a rally. Now 15, the long-haired, hip-hop-savvy Coloradan is one of 21 young activists joining climate scientist James Hansen in suing the Obama administration for failing to ditch fossil fuels. 'It's basically a bunch of kids saying you're not doing your job,' he told me here at the U.N. COP21 climate change summit in Paris. 'You're failing, you know. F-minus. We're holding you accountable for your lack of action.'"
If he's 15 years old there hasn't been any statistically significant temperature increase in his lifetime. What is he complaining about?
Really, who cares.
Xiuhtezcatl .......wow....what a name
This is equally as useless as praying. Thanks for wasting time and space on the front page with this shit.
Xiuhtezcatl .......wow....what a name
Hey, at least it's not Quetzalcoatl.
Why aren't they suing Congress? The people's reps decide the nation's laws. Or do we now live in a dictatorship, much like Russia, wherein one tyrant pretty essentially crafts all the rules?
So much for the representative Republic, then.
And to think George Lucas thought it died on George Bush's watch.
Hmm... I checked The Constitution and it doesn't say anything about it being the President's job to "ditch fossil fuels". Heck, it doesn't even mention "climate change". Perhaps this kid should take a Civics / Government class and learn that it's Congress that passes these things called "laws"...
It must have been something you assimilated. . . .
Now that the precedent has been set, I'm looking forward to suing all of these students twenty years from now for their terrible career choices which have made them unemployable, thus depriving me of the tax revenue needed to support my Social Security and Medicare.
I guess he hasn't gotten to the class in school yet explaining that the Executive branch can't enact laws . . .
"People who think they know everything are very annoying to those of us who do."-Mark Twain
and only be able to grasp inordinately complex issues as being single-faceted.
In order to prove standing, he will have to prove that he's sustained damages. He will find that hard to do. The kid might as well sue for having his financial future mortgaged to a hilt while he is at it. At least in that case, he could document how he is being royally screwed.
Someone you trust is one of us.
Is this the same James Hanson who warned us in Jan 2009 that there were "only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world"? That if we fail, all will be lost? Because we busted that deadline in Jan 2014. And the world hasn't exactly ended yet.
I hope he comes out on Air Force One, bringing his limo in tow, to meet with these kids and tells them, to their faces, that he just created more of a carbon surplus then they will in their entire lives and a cost more than all their combined tax dollars will ever amount to. Let those hippies put that in their pipe and smoke it tonight.
It's the victim culture don't you know, so everyone cares. This kid should get what he wants just because he cried "FOUL" at someone. I think the song said "Money for nothing and your chicks for free!" right?
The kid might have been smarter to break^Winvent, a clock and get invited to the White House and Google before the lawsuit... but hey, that ship may have already sailed... to Qatar that is.
Is my cynicism showing?
-The wise argue that there are few absolutes, the fool argues that there are no probabilities.
I know climate change is real, and think we need to take serious action, but this kind of posturing just makes my penis retract and as a result I must compensate by pushing the pedal to the metal adding even more CO2 into the atmosphere.
Fortunately I have someone to sue over this. surely that will make everything right.
James Hansen should be immediately separated from these children.
The man is an absolute climate lunatic.
...that's not how ANY OF THIS works."
Rush Limbaugh told me just the other day that the whole global warming thing was a sham. Why would an administration set policy based on fiction?
Does he have a plan to eliminate fossil fuels from his energy mix? It's not easy. Granted, government can help and there needs to be a coordinated effort, but it's not as if we can snap our fingers and replace ~70% of energy production (stats for USA, but not unusual world-wide). Sue away, but any potential financial penalty or other compulsion isn't going to magically make it happen. It has to happen eventually because fossil fuels are not sustainable, and there are additional incentives in the form of the expected negatives of a higher CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and ocean, but it's going to take decades of hard work.
And why should we care that she is over climate change inaction?
So, he's suing POTUS for not ridding the world of fossil fuels but he flies to Paris on a jet that uses fossil fuels... Hmmm. I guess he wants every one ELSE to stop using fossil fuels.
You sue the executive because he could be liable for malfeasance ( failing to do their duty). If there is some law under which it could be shown he had some specific obligation.
You can imagine some sufficiently twisted expansionist interpretation of exist environmental regulation where that might be possible. Its hard on the other hand at least for me as a lay person see how you could make a claim against the legislative body, they have powers but they don't really have much of anything in the way of legally defined duties.
Personally I hope they win at least the first round. I don't agree with what their goals, I think Obama and his EPA have already grossly over stepped and acted in excess of their authority. On the other hand they are going to continue to imagine new executive powers and playing King until something like this comes along and shows them it can bite them in the ass.
If a law suit like this can go forward brought by the general public than plenty of other suites could too. I can't wait until Joe Sixpack is able to sue the president for not deporting illegals as required for example; or for failing to defend the Constitution of the United States because he fought a foreign conflict without a Congressional declaration of war...
Oh the possibilities to restore checks on executive power.

... Just as soon as he shows us all HIS plan to ditch all fossil fuel use, without a negative energy balance at any time, will all the math shown, and the most pessimistic assumptions you can make about renewable availability and construction/maintenance energy costs baked in. After that, I want him to figure out how to PAY for it. Then I want him to take a good look at what goes into all those 'Green' technologies. A solar panel is energy intensive to make, and requires some toxic materials.
According to https://www.whitehouse.gov/ene..., since Obama took office:
* The EPA released the Clean Power Plan — the first-ever carbon pollution standards for existing power plants, ...and on and on.
* The U.S. increased solar electricity generation by more than ten-fold, and tripled electricity production from wind power.
* The DOI has approved over 50 wind, solar, and geothermal utility-scale projects on public or tribal lands.
* Obama put forth initiatives to help develop principles for establishing energy corridors; encourage the use of designated energy corridors in western states; expedite the review of transmission projects in non-western states; and improve the overall transmission siting
* Created the Advanced Research Project Agency-Energy (ARPA-E)
* Proposed the toughest fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles in U.S. history
* Finalized the first-ever fuel economy standards for commercial trucks, vans, and buses for model years 2014-2018.
* The EPA proposed two new rules in 2014 under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program to curb HFC's.
* Released a Strategy to Reduce Methane Emissions that builds on progress to date and takes steps to further cut methane emissions from landfills, coal mining, agriculture, and oil and gas systems.
* Committed to deploying 3 gigawatts of renewable energy on military installations, including solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal, by 2025.
* Directed federal agencies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions from sources such as building energy use and fuel consumption by 28 percent by 2020 and increase deployment of renewable energy.
What's the common thread here? Well, things Obama *can* do (EPA regulations, federal programs) he did - what required House & Senate to write laws, he made proposals - largely in agreement of the relevant industry groups...but if no laws are written as a result of all this work - is that Obama's fault?

Which was the original, and still accurate, name by which this phenomenon was known, until right wing messaging diluted it to climate change concern so that it could be deliberately confused with natural climate change cycles.
Or if you want to be pedantic, we could call it "the climate changes associated with global warming".
Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?
> do we now live in a dictatorship, much like Russia, wherein one tyrant pretty essentially crafts all the rules?
Yes.

Those fine young Activists should do their part to cut down on CO2 production by holding their breath for 20 mins.
It's clear President Obama had and has the will to act significantly on reducing CO2 emissions.
He is fighting the fossils in an obstructionist, denialist, bought-and-paid-for Republican-controlled senate and congress for every inch of progress on this issue.
The targeting of this lawsuit is misplaced.
Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?
Psychopaths always use children to do their dirty work because they are easily manipulated.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration has posted data showing monthly carbon dioxide emissions were at a 27-year low as of April 2015. Figures posted by the U.S. EPA show that the US greenhouse gas emissions have dropped 9 percent between 2005 and 2013. These figures show the US has had the largest reduction in greenhouse pollutants than any other country. The increasing use of Natural Gas is primarily responsible for most of these figures.

...whenever I think I've heard about the stupidest lawsuit imaginable, somebody manages to raise the bar.
In an ideal world, this would be tossed out like the steaming pile of shit that it is, and the defendants would be awarded costs.

* Coloradan -- Dude, you can hook people up, ya know.
I'm sure he's a total hero with his brave, hip-hop flavored anti-authority, not to mention probably getting more dewy-eyed hippie chicks than even a 15 year can handle.
I get how as a scientist watching things you want to push people to action. That being said, James Hansen has gone a little overboard IMHO and into the realm of damaging the credibility of scientists in general be politicizing things himself. He's written things like:
Mountain glaciers, providing fresh water for rivers that supply hundreds of millions of people, will disappear - practically all of the glaciers could be gone within 50 years
This despite the IPCC estimates that gain/loss in glaciers will be regionally dependant on precipitation changes(and this based on admittedly poorly modelled precipitation).
The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired power plants are factories of death.
This isn't precisely a statement backed by peer reviewed evidence either...
When people are angry about the science being politicized, it does NOT help for the scientists to go over board politicizing things themselves in the hope of being a counter-balance. It doesn't work between FOX and MSNBC counter balancing each other from Rep-Dem sides of things, and it doesn't work for educating people on the science either. You just get more and more grandiose hyperbole, half truths and flat out propaganda from both sides.
Phase two will be the exhumation those responsible for the industrial revolution and the summary defiling of their corpses. That'll show climate change!
Agnosticism is the only logically defensible position, since there is no test that can prove, nor disprove, the existence of a supreme being.
Be that as it may, there is no logically compelling reason to believe the Bible, the Koran, or any other religious teachings about God. The evidence on hand makes this fact plain: the teachings come from other humans. Other humans who have no way to prove that they have any special knowledge on the subject.
People try to escape this fact by claiming that their favorite religious text actually came from God, using other humans as a medium. A notion which itself comes from other humans. The most heroic of mental gymnastics can't hide the fact that religious teachings are humans all the way down.
So, when you put your faith in a religious text, you are actually just putting your faith in other humans. And humans can be wrong.
"at age 6 when he saw an environmental documentary"

The plaintiff does not have legal standing to sue on behalf of the climate. The lawyers need to recruit Gaia as the plaintiff.
Climate is secondary to geo-politics, and considering that about a third of the world's countries survive on fossil fuel revenue, from Nicaragua to Iran to Mexico to Russia to Sweden and Norway, removing the US from fossil fuels will cause a massive shift in oil prices that will send these countries into bankruptcy and cause a major global economic and social crisis leading to terrorism and war.
So in a sense he has protected your generation kid, by not just dropping fossil fuels entirely (if that were even feasible) and not sending the world into a major global depression.
Well, that does it! Climate fixed, we're saved! Thanks Quetzalcoatl!
We don't have a state-run media we have a media-run state.
This case has no chance. (IANAL, but I can google) The president can not be sued or prosecuted criminally for any act he does (or does not do) in the execution of his duties as president.
(from http://definitions.uslegal.com...)
Executive immunity is an immunity granted to officers of the executive branch of government from personal liability for tortious acts or omissions done in the course of carrying out their duties. The U.S. president's executive immunity is absolute; however, the immunity of other federal executive officials is qualified.
A lawsuit demanding that the government usurp even more power that the people never granted to it? Fuck that kid, and the asshole tree-huggers who put him up to this.

The only title of honor that a tyrant can grant is "Enemy of the State."
Clearly Obama is on board with enacting more renewable energy sources and reducing what he and some believe is a slight rise in overall world temperature. I certainly think everyone is going about this all wrong in convincing the general world public of such a crisis. In fact many latest polls show people generally feel that climate change if indeed is happening which a good percentage don't would doubt any real effect given the limited power of man to affect climate in general. As if Obama could wave a wand and instill real significant change quickly. His action is not the action that will provide any effect if its even possible. The effects on climate will come gradually as the world goes through many more regional industry growth spurts such as India. China will also have to become more determined to clean up its industries and so far that is happening very slowly. To file suit against Obama is to file suit against the very hand that is trying to help. This is the problem with many young people. The inability to see the solutions and the problems correctly and to address them in a way that is acceptable and doable.
If we can start suing the president (and/or congress) for their failure to do what we want them to do, where will it end? Sue Obama because he failed to even try to secure our borders or enforce our immigration laws? Sue him for failure to defend the Constitution? Sue him for all the far-left social experiment failures? We could easily come up with 100+ things that he has failed to do that at least a few percentage of the electorate think that he should have done. You could say the same thing about each of the past 43 presidents too. If climate change turns out to be a good thing (who is to say that a warmer planet is not a better planet), will we get an apology from all the protesters? Fat chance! Would anyone prefer the climate of the last ice-age to the one we have now?

It may be happening but it's not us
Ok it's happening, but it's all those poor people who are trying to catch up with us
Ok it's happening, but there's nothing we can do about it.
Ok it happened, but there was nothing we could have done about it.
Yes. You could have done something. Finding yourself it a hole, you could have stopped digging.
You could have kept your friggin' traps shut with your destructive obstructionist bullshit and got the hell out of the way of the smart and motivated people trying to solve the problem.
You've already cost us 35 years of inaction since the problem was well known in scientific circles to exist.
So I say again, shut up and get out of the way.
Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?
The long-haired, hip-hop-savvy Coloradan sounds like a little cunt...

The militaries of the world are working in concert to spray chemtrails across the skies in an attempt to genocide the world (except Germany who was sued to be stopped). Obama should and could stop the us military from participating in this madness. The pilots are propagandized to believe things such as "They are patching the ozone holes". "They are fighting a loosing battle", "The earth is doomed". The National weather service is under gag orders not to discuss the modification of the weather. The huge storm that recently hit Mexico was an example of weather warfare. This has nothing to do with pollution, and everything to do with military objectives to control the weather so that people will believe they themselves are destroying the planet. Its a weird mind twist sort of psychological warfare as well. Forgive my scattered communication style... Could we theoretically get off fossil fuels? Yes. Could we do it overnight? No. The spice must flow. To unilaterally end the usage of fossil fuels in transportation would be to "End all commerce among the Great Houses". There simply is no replacement for fossil fuels when it comes to transportation. Especially once you consider the infrastructure.
This doesn't even begin to cover the power of fossil fuels, specifically oil, when it comes to medical technology. Did this kid get a vaccine? If so, he has benefitted from fossil fuels. Has he ever been to a hospital or a doctors office and been examined or received a physical? Again, fossil fuels made this possible to do. Before plastic, many many many kinds of procedures were simply not possible to do safely. Lost large amounts of blood? Die well, either from the blood loss or from playing Russian roullette with a blood transfusion (did these even exist prior to refrigeration and plastics?).
We may reach a day where we do not rely on fossil fuels for transportation. I very much hope so. But Rome was not built in a day, and neither will this effort to reduce fossil fuel usage. Fossil fuels have built over the last 2 centuries, they won't be undone in 1 decade.

That's about how the climate-change conversation goes on The Hill these days.
Are YOU using the TOOL, or is the TOOL using YOU? Think about it!
...and why is she finally over climate change inaction? :-P
We're not perfect but we try. The most important thing is we are fully willing to subject ourselves to a significant and steadily increasing simple carbon tax on all our fossil fuel use.
We've super-insulated and sealed air leaks in our small house and have double and triple-glazed windows. In late-October through April we set the thermostat to 19 or 20 C when we're in and awake, and 17 C at night, so using a lot less natural gas heating. May through Mid-Oct the gas is off, and no A/C just windows open and tree shading in summer. We're all LED lighting, and converted to a small electric hot water heater from gas. Our hydro-electricity bill is about $300 a year, and will be reduced to near nothing once we do our next two steps: Replace fridge with super-efficient DC fridge and DC freezer, and put in a 5-panel PV array on the roof to run a DC sub-panel through a lithium ion battery.
We ride our bikes and walk and take transit most of the time, reserving the vehicle mostly for weekend trips and occasional hauling items.
We've reduced our meat consumption (but not eliminated it). The reduction is a healthier choice anyway.
While it's hard to do as much as is needed while living in our current cities, with our oil-fueled supply chains, what's most important in my opinion is to advocate for tax-shift measures of a scale needed to significantly, steadily change behaviour through the operation of the (tilted-playing field) market; to be willing to be subjected to significant fossil-fuel taxation, and to work to come up with clever new ways of doing things that use less fossil-fuel.
Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?
Git off my tundra!
Yet, it may not be the problematic wheel.
0bama hasn't been doing his job since he first took office. He apparently has an aversion to actually doing anything, and would rather just talk about it.
Oh, but he is an accomplished master at vacations and playing golf (like most Presidents).
We may actually be better off with a President and Congress who don't get much accomplished, because just look at all the bad stuff they do when they get around to doing something.
My advice, kids, is to get your panties out a wad and grow up a little before you start demanding stuff. It may not be what you think you're getting.
Not suggesting that war is a good idea, but look what nations can accomplish quickly when they have to when they go to war.
Look at the societal and production changes Britain and the US did for the six short years of world war 2.
Look at the Manhatten project that developed nuclear weapons from scratch in a few years. Imagine if that sort of effort was put toward something constructive.
If we start working together in the right general direction, politically and technologically, change can happen fast. And we have political ways of helping people who are disrupted by the transition, and that's all part of it. The challenge is staggering, but that's when things get exciting and when the best people are required to step up.
Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?
It's okay, the GOP's existing ACA and immigration lawsuits toward O have backlogged the courts through a president or two down the road...

Check out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... It seems to suggest that this is the FIFTH time the global temperature has spiked in the past ~420K years. There appears to be some periodicity to the graph as well, which makes me think this time is right on schedule.
The magnitude of climate change to come if we continue business as usual cannot effectively be prepared for.
It will be at least 4 degrees C and up to 9 degrees C warmer global average for 1000s of years.

he's seen no statistically significant growth in his height. You see, the problem is that you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
Within his lifetime, the temperatures that were extreme when he was a child have now become normal. THAT is a significant change. The measurement of the TREND may not reach statistical significance, but then again he's not talking about the trend, he's talking about the change.
Or is that carbon and oxygen taken from somewhere else and your breathing is just letting it go again?
And do tell, how many people chug down a barrel of crude of an evening?
If you sue the US Federal Government and the case is dismissed, especially with prejudice, can't the court fine you for wasting the government's time?
I predict the case will be laughed out by the judges with a "no/lack of standing" summary judgement.

Is this the larval form of a hipster? Smug little twat.
Typing his retarded name creates more carbon dioxide than driving a typical car twenty miles.

A judge in the Netherlands ruled over a similar case against the Dutch state. The ruling was that the state was not doing enough to reduce greenhouse gases.

Can the Administration counter-sue for wasting the court's time?
The Democrats took control of both the House and the Senate in 2006 when Bush was President. They were in control in 2007 when Bush sent people up to capitol hill to ask for legal authority to stop the financial craziness at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the congressionally-overseen home load outfits at the core of the 2008 meltdown) and every Democrat US Senator (including then senators Joe Biden (now vice president) and Barack Obama (now president)) voted "no" depriving Bush of any legal authority over the mess that was growing. After the 2008 meltdown, Barack Obama was elected President and the Democrats achieved a super-majority in Both the US House and the US Senate, giving the Democrats the power to pass any law they wanted.
The Democrats had the super-majority in the Senate until February 4, 2010 when Republican Scott Brown was sworn-in after he won the late Ted Kennedy's senate seat, after which the Democrats still held a majority in the Senate and a super majority in the House and they were still able to push through Obamacare without a single Republican vote. The Democrats did not lose the House until 2010 and did not lose the Senate until 2014.
This continuing claim that the feckless Republicans in DC who cannot even cut $1 from Obamacare or Obama's immigration actions, were unable to even take a vote against his Iran nukes deal, and fully-fund Planned Parenthood every year against the demands of their own voters and in morbid fear of Obama and the press are somehow responsible for blocking every utopian fantasy of the far left is insanely dishonest, but great for revving-up the liberal base of the Democrat party. The truth is that the Democrats could have banned all petrochemicals and coal in 2009, and converted the nation to single-payer socialized healthcare if they had truly wanted to. Their power was so high in congress that they made a game out of locking Republicans out of meeting rooms in the Capitol and held all the healthcare "negotiations" between Democrats and lobbyists for their big campaign contributors in the insurance lobby (which is how we got government ordering every American to buy a product from the health insurance industry)
The East Anglia "Climate Gate" e-mail scandal PROVED the long suspected FACT that the warming alarmists were rigging the peer review and paper publishing business. So, having rigged the process so that nobody who disagrees can get published, cult members now get to run around screaming that there are no published peer-reviewed refutations of the beliefs of the cult!
There is now no such thing as "peer reviewed", "published", or "science" in "climate science". That was all killed by the cult members and there is no way to restore credibility short of doing EVERYTHING including data collection, data analysis and communication between so-called researchers IN THE OPEN IN PUBLIC. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
C'mon culties: what are you hiding? EVERY DAMN THING IN PUBLIC NOW! Nothing related to this multi-trillion-dollar scientology-like cult should be in any way concealed, obscured, paywalled, "adjusted", etc. EVERY person on the planet has a vested interest in every detail of the data, procedures, instruments, and analysis being fully in public. In fact: why are we now having hearings in congress to see what the government employees at NOAA are hiding from their taxpayer employers, and why are they all screaming and whining that they should not have to disclose what taxpayers are paying for? It's very interesting to see so many of these vile slugs trying to hide their work-related materials under the veil of a president's right to keep his political contemplations within the excutive branch from public eyes... (NO real scientist needs such a political shield for political activity)
Strike "Young Climate Activists" for "Brainwashed Young Cult Members".
The left has always historically organized young people who are too young to know the dreadful history of leftism into brigades of mind-washed monsters who've been taught they are smarter, wiser, and better-educated than their elders who object to the "new order". This was done with:
1. The "Red Guards" in China waving their "little red books"
2. The "Pioneers" in nearly every communist country
3. The Marxist Khmer Rouge did the same thing
And, of course:
4. The Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (National SOCIALIST German WORKER PARTY) had its "Hitler Youth"
All these leftists tell kids that the old folks are stupid and backward and hold views and values that must be left behind.
Right-leaning orgs like churches and the scouts tend to teach the opposite: that old people have wisdom and that society has developed the way it has for reasons, some of which are important. And, no, there is no honest way to call the NSDAP "right wing" except in comparison to international Communism, which is indeed further left; BOTH are creatures of the far left arguing for government control of nearly everything and supremacy of the masses over the individual only really differing over degree and the importance on national identity.
Although i think this kid has some good intentions ultimately its not going to do anything positive for his position, if anything its just giving more ammo to those that already doubt that climate change is happening/can be fixed. What we really need it something more like this: https://www.ted.com/talks/amor... Either way its going to cost us a lot of money sometime in the future to change our energy habits, we can either continue to fund something that we know will fail or even possibly kill us at some point or invest in cleaner and cheaper technologies and slowly reduce our need for coal and oil. Not only does this help the environment but it will also save lots of money in the long run, something I think everyone can agree on. The problem of the 1-2C temperature is sadly unavoidable at this point but the sooner we start moving towards other sources of energy the better for everyone involved.
A question for everyone who thinks that CO2 controls the climate. How long with rising CO2 and flat or falling temperatures before you admit your theory is wrong? 20 years? 30? Never?
Both of the satellite datasets (RSS, UAH) show no warming for over 18 years. In that time CO2 has risen 8-10%.
Why do I use the 2 satellite measurements?
First they have the greatest coverage. RSS goes from 82.5N to 82.5 S and UAH, 85N to 85S.
Second they are the least adjusted. Unlike NOAA which makes completely unjustified adjustments by raising good data (ARGO bouy temps) to match what they themselves admit is bad, corrupted data (ship engine intake temps).
Lastly they are run by 2 scientists with good credentials (Dr Mears & Dr Spencer respectively) and despite looking at what is almost the same data come to different conclusions. Dr Mears thinks CO2 does control the climate and Dr Spencer does not. I like that. Not only does it keep them honest it makes me think and read both sides to see why they are so different in their conclusions despite almost identical data. So far I side with the position of Dr Spencer.
When he said: "The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired power plants are factories of death.", he was not employing a shred of science, he was being an incredibly dishonest and irrational partisan propagandist. One (sadly) expects such hyperbolic insanity from a bunch of unwashed college-age protesters in hemp clothes and in extreme need of a haircut, but not from a reputable scientist. Hansen has been the patron saint of the global warming alarmists for a very long time; he was at the forefront of the hype back when Al Gore was a senator and involved with him before the Clinton administration - so he cannot be easily dismissed as "some guy nobody heard of" as often happens when people of any political strain are hammered by the words of one of their activists.
Here's the big problem with Hansen's quoted statement:
Like all these sorts of anti-coal and anti-oil rants, it does not pay attention to the full impact of the thing being condemned. It's like renouncing all aviation because some birds are killed in the process. Millions of people have been, and continue to be, saved by coal. Coal provides affordable energy that heats and cools homes and schools and hospitals, allows people to cook food, chill or freeze food for preservation, chill and preserve medications, etc while also powering the transportation of millions of people allowing them to work to earn the money to have better-than-subsistence lives and longer lives. All the wind and solar power on Earth will not be saving as many lives per year as coal does for at least another century and possibly never (nuclear might manage to overtake wind and solar in that roll before they ever attain it.
I will turn against coal when it becomes a net-negative, but not one minute before then. There is something supremely evil in the idea that poor people around the globe should have to suffer NOW so rich elites can pretend they are saving the planet from 1 degree C of warmth 100 years from now. It's extremely arrogant and elitist for today's rich people and the politicians they buy to order middle- and lower-class people to sacrifice NOW and have poorer lives NOW for that 1 degree of cooler weather that MIGHT result in a century while the elites themselves refuse to even reduce their personal luxuries. As they operate personal palaces, super-cars and super-yachts while jetting around the world in private and government planes, toasting each other with fine wine and food at exotic super-expensive elite resorts, they insist that any middle class person who doubts the need for emergency action is insane or greedy or toxic. This behavior is VILE.
Climate change has ALWAYS occurred; there's no question that it will always occur no matter what we do.
Technology is always advancing
It's quite likely that over the next century new tech will arise that makes it far easier, cheaper, and more efficient for people then to get along with any effects of whatever climate change occurs than it is for us now to mitigate it at great cost and inconvenience and by consigning millions of people to poorer lives. People a century from now will be far better equipped to deal with any sea rise that MIGHT happen, than most are able to currently deal with reductions in fossil energy now. For example, in just the one winter of 2013 thousands of people in the UK alone froze to death because of the increase in costs of heating... just how do those lives lost stack-up against the future imagined deaths that might happen in a century if people then are too dumb to get into boats?
but do please, Brer Fox, don't fling me in dat brier-patch
This is pure stage-play. Obama couldn't have asked for a nicer gift, some jerk suing Obama to make Obama do what Obama wants to do.

"If you have (or are getting) a STEM degree, you are likely to get shunned" (by environmentalists)
Rubbish.
Most environmental concern is BASED on the findings of science,
whereas lack of environmental concern is based on either ignorance or selfish greed.
There are very few definitions of 'environmental concern' that fit your description. The large environmental movements from groups like the Sierra Club and the Greenpeace are hardly based on sound scientific principle.
One of Greenpeace's top 3 bullet points on climate and energy is preaching AGAINST nuclear power, the one technology that can do the most today to reduce our climate impact.
The Sierra Club's website right now has one of it's biggest bullet points as "Save the Bees". This in spite of the fact that bee colony numbers in the Us are at a 20 year high. The activism is lobbying to abolish evil neonicitinoid pesticides that are killing bees. The same neonic pesticides that were adopted to replace ones much more harmful to bees... Not sure we really are helping bees by going backwards, and the alternative of simply banning all pesticides means jacking food prices so high that the poor go back to eating far worse diets again.
Sorry, but environmental concern as represented by the largest self-proclaimed such groups is anything but 'scientific' and is rountinely pushing agendas contrary to the science,
How exactly does a carbon tax whose revenue is either
a) given directly back to taxpayers in the form of other tax reductions or dividends, or
b) spent on clean and renewable energy R&D
enrich bankers and the elite?
You need to unload that huge (and racist) chip on your shoulder.
Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?
