A New 'Quake' Episode Appears 20 Years Later (vice.com)

An anonymous reader quotes this report from Motherboard: The months leading up to this year's phenomenal reboot of Doom were stuffed with all kinds of fun developments surrounding the original series, whether it was mods that let you play as Duke Nukem or whole new levels from famed designer John Romero. There's now a new Quake game in the works, and already it appears to be enjoying a similar renaissance. Yesterday MachineGames, the studio behind Wolfenstein: The New Order, released an entirely new episode for the original Quake in celebration of its 20-year anniversary, and you can play it entirely for free.

Classic DOOM and Quake have been kept alive all these years by fans through source ports, maps and other custom content. Playing classic DOOM has almost never been easier and certainly has never been easier to play in a Multiplayer setting.

It's very fortunate that early on, companies like iD had the foresight to encourage the mod community instead of hoarding their IP. Blizzard has been providing map editors since Warcraft 2 (I think Orcs and Humans had an even more basic one, I can't recall now) and certainly the power of the Warcraft 3 map editor enabled the creation of DOTA and extended the life of all their RTS games.

The animation sequence for the Quake zombies shows them grabbing their ass and tossing something at the player. It could be ass, might be shit. An inside joke from the gamer developers.
