US Drought Brings A Surprise Benefit: No Tornados (cnn.com)
Slashdot reader turkeydance tipped us off to news that America hasn't had a single tornado in November, even though last year it experienced 99, and averages 58 every November. CNN reports:
Drought is overwhelming Southeastern states this fall, and temperatures have soared, depleting ground moisture. Storms need moist air to develop, and the lack of moisture this fall has inhibited storm development both for the much needed rain and the formation of supercell storms capable of producing tornadoes. Precipitation has been near or at zero for weeks in the region. The last measurable day of rain in Birmingham, Alabama, was September 18... As a result, wildfires have become the main disaster threat this fall.
The last five years have all seen a below-average number of tornados, and between 2012 and 2014 the U.S. saw fewer tornadoes than any previous three-year stretch.
Interesting.
As they say, everything is connected to everything else.

Will climate activists blame the drought on global warming and try to argue that we should have more frequent/severe tornadoes?
Another benefit of climate change...bring on the emissions!
As Big O departs DC the Paris Climate Warming Alarm is all but dead.
The problem was always a sever, as in no measurements or observations to back-up the claims (alarms).
I live just outside of Birmingham, AL. Back on September 18th I bought the best umbrella I've ever owned. It works so well that it won't let rain come within a hundred miles of me.
That's the honest truth and I don't know what to do. I really want to keep the umbrella, but my yard needs rain. The grass crunches when I walk across the yard. It's drier than my ex-wife.
No more liberals! Off to Canada you go babies! No free college for you!
will love this and spin it as much as possible into the "right" direction.
This statistic will not really be interesting until November is over. We are less than half way through it. So really this story is saying that the US has not had a tornado for less than two weeks so what it should be compared to is how often that happens. If they really want to pull stupid stunts like this they should at least try to make it really sensational. They can run a story half way through January claiming that that US has had no tornadoes all year, Britain can have one claiming that the sun has not shone all year due to the clouds and in Canada we'll have the story about snow on the ground all the year....ok so that last one is true otherwise all our igloos would melt but you get the point.
This will end come January 20, 2017. No more droughts or tornados.
Louisiana saw historic flooding in August. We had something like four months worth of rainfall in three days time.
I'm OK no rain for now!
Calm before the storm, i think the US will get a few mega tornadoes in the next 4 years starting when trump is in office...
has there been an increase of wind farms in this area?
We were analyzing what might happen to North America due to global warming. As long as you didn't live on the coasts, global warming would actually make things nicer in the higher latitudes. (With the massive caveat that the glaciers and snowmelt that the West gets most of its water from would probably cease to exist.)
Captain Freedom should be appointed Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense. Nobody messes with Captain Freedom.
Learn to love Alaska
And then when the farmers realize they just salted their crop fields, they'll cry so hard they'll get a second watering for free!
So here we are with radical weather changes and a president elect that appoints a climate change denier to lead the EPA. They just can't live in the real world but they are killing off innocent people who do have normal minds and beliefs. For Halloween do not have a pumpkin. Make a TRUMPKIN. The orange face is just right and a bit of yellow straw or a blond wig will match his hideous hair. Use everything, everyday, that you possibly can to bring down Donald Trump. Try not to break any laws but create as much havoc as you can, amplify social unrest. Do what it takes to save our nation from the orange TRUMPENSTEIN.
DAMN that global warming!
Thanks to the drought, there have been *no* sharknadoes either!
WARNING: Smartphones have side effects--most of them undocumented.
No where did he say anything about global cooling or the 70s.
He's talking about the modern era of AGW global warming you've been on about since gore made his thoroughly debunked movie and got a fake Nobel prize.
I believe the answer is zero.
But nice try.
We had one for near a decade which has mostly subsided the last few years, sadly
As an asthmatic and hayfever sufferer, the difference is night and day. I honestly thought I'd 'grown out' of my asthma and hayfever as I basically didn't have symptoms for near a decade, or exceedingly rare / lite symptoms.
Last 2 years and especially this year, just a disaster, not fun at all.
The weather around here seems more like dust bowl days of the 1920's and 30's than anything else in recent history.
The NOAA tornado statistics only go back to 1955.
Does anybody know of any source that goes further back?
Can anybody show where somebody predicted that we would get less tornados.
Ideally, somebody with a low false alarm rate.
The state of understanding our weather systems through modeling seems pretty limited.
It seems to be stuck with whenever we see X happen, Y usually happens next.
At this point, I'd settle for what is X.
That is what major circulations (ocean currents?) are doing what to make the SE as dry as it is?
Did this happen in the 20's as well?
I believe the answer is zero.
But nice try.
Sorry, but we're talking rabid insanity, which doesn't require a specific set of actions, but covers all the crazy stuff Republicans did to show how completely fucking unhinged they were. Which is important, since if you focus on a specific set of actions, you can be mislead into ignoring all sorts of craziness.
But, you remember something they did claim they'd do? Lots of other talk too. Don't deny it. Links abound.. Huh, maybe the difference is that the right-wing makes empty threats, while the left actually gets off their asses. Or maybe it's all Haymarket Square type things. Since the right is big on accusing the left of setting up false-flag operations, that means they have to admit the existence of such things. Right? You can wonder if outside agitators are leading peaceful protest rallies astray, right?
Or not. Doesn't change the craziness, it just means the right-wing is a bunch of posers. All hat and no cattle.
Which by coincidence, describes the Trump. An empty-suited bombastic sack of hot air.
Firenados are up 9000% in the Southeast.
