Automatic Brakes Stopped Berlin Truck During Christmas Market Attack (dw.com)
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Deutsche Welle: The truck that plowed into a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12, came to a halt due an automatic braking system, according to German media reports on Wednesday. The automatic braking system potentially saved the lives of many more people in the recent terrorist attack. An investigation by newspaper "Suddeutsche Zeitung" and broadcasters "NDR" and "WDR" found the Scania R 450 semi-trailer stopped after between 70 and 80 meters (250 feet). The system was reportedly engaged after sensing a collision. Previous reports speculated that the truck had driven erratically and stopped due to the heroic actions of the truck's Polish driver, who lay fatally wounded in the cabin. In 2012 the European Union adopted regulations requiring all new trucks exceeding 3,500 kilograms be fitted with advanced emergency braking systems. The systems initially alert drivers and then take evasive action. The regulation was adopted to reduce the number of rear end collisions by trucks.
Could have stopped. Should have stopped.... Technology is evolving fast.
If this technologically non-savvy terrorist had no idea about automated braking, just think about technologically savvy terrorist who will be able to program automatic trucks to ignore collision by hacking certain sensors. We are talking about automatic road killing robot.
How would you stop such autonomous cargo truck with no driver to shoot at?
Perhaps you should learn german and read german news.
This was not a refugee but a planted "terrorist" or call him an insane criminal who planted himself with plenty of false documents.
If you have an idea how to handle the refugee crisis, then speak up. If you only has malice for the people suffering then please keep it for your self.

Yessir, unfortunately the biomatter sensor had been bypassed after multiple roe deer collisions.

i don't see any double edged sword : you can get a vehicle to accelerate without braking with a stone and a bit of tape, and "ignore collision" is the default mode without that system. But the problem would not be to accelerate without a driver, the problem would be to drive at all. You would need to remote control the vehicle, a much harder problem. Even if you used a driver-less car you would need to change the software to bypass all securities. Needless to say, it is much easier terror wise to get a cheap drone, attach 500 kg of remotely detonated plastic, and use that, you got remote control together with a camera built in.

After you already hit something? What would you win by not hitting the brakes? People rear ending you still have their airbags and seatbelts and crumple zones, which will protect them from the worst. People in front of you don't. So breaking and getting some 40 ton heap of steel into stillstand as soon as possible once it is out of control (and because it hit something, there is enough proof to call it out of control) is in any case better than let it run to save the people driving to close behind it a few bucks by keeping their cars undamaged.
And I'm pretty sure that the Old Testament says that kids who sass their parents should be put to death. Not to mention the large number of "abominations" outside of being gay that are routinely ignored in Leviticus.
What was your point again?
Maybe, and I'm just throwing this out there, we shouldn't base the entirety of our behavior models on books over 1000 years old. I'm just saying....
Mr. Hu is not a ninja.
Because Germany is not a "christian" country. The largest religious group in Germany is "no religious affiliation".
Quran (5:51) - "O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people."
And I'm pretty sure that the Old Testament says that kids who sass their parents should be put to death. Not to mention the large number of "abominations" outside of being gay that are routinely ignored in Leviticus.
You are comparing a book that is routinely ignored with a book that is routinely followed.

So, ... this system reduces the number of rear end collisions by slamming on the breaks after it hits something?
It's probably designed to prevent issues of runaway trucks where the driver is in someway incapacitated (asleep, passed out, heart attack, whatever) or simply inattentive. It applies after the first strike to keep from plowing on down the road or pushing the first car it hit into the car in front and cascading on down the road.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for it to be pitted against a slightly greater evil
I'm pretty sure both books are routinely ignored.
I went to school with a number of Muslim students. They didn't attack me, or condemn me, or anything like that. I was actually in a study group with a couple of them for one semester. And at least one of them routinely ignored the Koran's prohibition on drinking.
I worked with at least one Muslim co-worker at my last job. He didn't attack me, or condemn me, or anything like that. I had a number of Muslim customers (including at least one who converted to Islam). None of them attacked me, or condemned me, or anything like that.
There are an estimated 3.3 million Muslims living in the U.S. I think we would have noticed if most of them were routinely attacking Christians.
It is not the religion, per se, that is the problem. It is fundamentalists or extremists who claim to be part of the religion that are the problem.
Mr. Hu is not a ninja.
People rear ending you still have
...responsibility for following too close, the cause of the majority of rear end collisions. (The rest are caused by inattentive driving.)
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
Was that before or after he called all Mexicans criminals? (You know, where he ended with "And some, I assume, are good people.")
Was that before or after he said he wanted to create a registry for an entire religion? (Which he's since flip-flopped on.)
Yeah, I'm not sure at all (sarcasm intended) where he got this rep for being a bigot.
Mr. Hu is not a ninja.
It is not the religion, per se, that is the problem. It is fundamentalists or extremists who claim to be part of the religion that are the problem.
I think we can safely say that it is both. Idiots are a problem, and people who get them worked up to do stupid things in the name of religion are also a problem. Take away that excuse and they'll have many less takers.
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
He didn't.

There's some evidence to suggest otherwise:
Which academic pursuit has been the most prevalent among Islamic jihadis?
It’s not the oddest question to come up at a dinner party, especially at the University of Oxford. But when it comes up between a Middle East expert and a sociologist, idle talk yields to a quest for data. That’s how political scientist Steffen Hertog and sociology professor Diego Gambetta soon found themselves poring through records of 404 people from 30 countries engaged in political violence between 2005 and 2007. Their answer? Engineering.
Of the 178 whose academic focus could be ascertained, 44 percent of those were engineers—most of them in electrical engineering, civil engineering, and computer studies. The next-largest group, Islamic studies, had fewer than half as many, at 19 percent [see table below, ”Fields of Study”].

Mexican's aren't converting or killing other people to make them Mexicans. Islamist's do this, are instructed to do this in their "holy" book. Salman Rushdee was correct. The Koran is the satanic verses. Only evil would do what the insane and difficult to read Koran would have you do. Keep them in their own lands to eternally fight and kill each other over which Islamist faction is the "correct" one.
Germany is quite christian, it is just not nearly as religious as USA. Christians form the majority of German population, most German holidays are christian in nature and the chancellor belongs to the christian democratic union.

Here's a story from the anointed Huffington Post claiming 80% of migrants are raped coming to the US. That's a pretty alarming figure. Here's another story on it by Fusion. Here's an Amnesty international story citing health care professionals claiming 6 out of 10 are abused.
There already is legal precedent: 8 U.S. Code 1182 - Inadmissible aliens clause f Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by President. If you don't believe in western values don't come to the west. Show us a democratic country that is majority Muslim. Islam is more than a religion, what should be addressed upon entry is a question about supporting Sharia law. It's incompatible with western values. How do other religions work in Muslim majority countries? How do they treat women or gays? Why do you feel it is superior to the US present stance?

A stopped out-of-control vehicle is a shitload safer than a moving out-of-control vehicle.
It's not exactly a novel concept; RV's and pretty much any towable trailer containing a battery and braking system have had automatic brakes in case of hitch failure for ages (I had a 1979 RV with a stock system).

Not really, not all fundamentalists, and religions or ideologies, contribute to the problem. But for extremists, I think most agree they're a problem in every culture.
And Obama did that deporting more people than any other president ever, yet people say he's sod on immigration.

Okay, I will chime in ...
There are an estimated 3.3 million Muslims living in the U.S. I think we would have noticed if most of them were routinely attacking Christians.
You are probably in the US as well. Regardless what we may think, the US as nation and the Americans in general are quite law-abiding . And even though there may be some very extreme and mostly conservative views in that great nation, it is rare relatively that folks resort to violence due to secular differences.
Do not fool yourself thinking that moderation and tolerance exists in primarily Muslim countries. Other religions are oppressed and abused. Governments and law enforcement will turn a blind eye and non-Muslim minorities just have to grin and bear it. Check out what happens in Iraq, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Egypt.
No, you have not been condemned to your face. What do you think happens behind your back?
Islam is where Christianity was 500 years ago. Can't say that there is a perfect religion, but I'd take living in a Christian country over a Muslim one, 100% of the time.
The world is changing; more open borders, a global economy and the even Internet as an equalizing medium. There are now more cultural clashes than what we have ever seen in history. And as much as I may consider myself a liberal and socialist, one cannot be naive either in regards the realities of Islam and how they (in general) deal with other groups.
If you don't know democratic countries where the majourity is Muslim, you probably should ask google.
Or ask yourself if you still have the right to remain in your country if you ask such questions from immigrants.

Security through obscurity is not security.
Sort of, from what I've seen it's pretty hard to prevent attacks especially if the attacker is suicidal. It seems that a lot of these folks use the easiest least common denominator way of doing attacks. Can't get a gun, use a pressure cooker. Can't even get that use a truck... In the grand scheme of things a lot of these folks are trying to get publicity on the news which the media does indirectly help but I don't see how that will ever change. Well unless we want the government to start covering up all incidents as "accidents".
The only way to prevent all terrorist attacks is to have draconian security measures and an end to all personal freedom. That's not a desirable option.
The next-best thing is to deny attackers the information they would need to improve their attacks. That won't work for all attackers, but there are far fewer meticulously-planned attacks than there are half-cocked affairs. If we can help a few attackers to remain ignorant and ineffective at no cost to society, why not?
No, the system is designed (in this case, this is not an autonomous car or driver assisting car) to give an audio alarm. This alarm has to be acknowledged after a second or two by the driver. If the driver does not hit the 'dead man switch' the car performs an automatic break.
The attacker in this case did not know about that system and/or where the switch is.

As your parent already pointed out: germans are not christians, 80% or more are agnostics or atheists.
Going to church on christmas or voting for CDU or even being a member does not make you a Christian.
I bet minimum 30% of the non Jew, non Muslim and non others even explicitly left Church to safe the church tax.
After France Germany is most likely the country with the biggest 'non Christian' population and in Europe most certainly the biggest 'non believers' population.

The Koran actually does not prohibit drinking. ....
It prohibits 'getting high' (as in loosing control) from any drug.
In other words it allows drinking with measure (and in plenty of islamic countries drinking is common).
But then came the Sharia

I drive a DAF CF Euro 6 with this fitted. It will slam the brakes on hard. Unfortunately it currently suffers from too many false positives, for example if there is a car stationary in a central reservation waiting to turn into a side road on the outside of a sharp bend the truck will decide you're going to hit it even though you're going round the bend and slam on the brakes.

Well unless we want the government to start covering up all incidents as "accidents".
Might not be a bad approach. Deny them their notoriety, and terrorism becomes even more pointless than it already was. Isaac Asimov described this in his Foundation books (the 'Moron decree').
You're right, he only called the one coming to America criminals, or do you think they not only fake the news but fake the trump giving the speech as well.
I'm pretty sure both books are routinely ignored.
The one book directly forms the basis of government and law in many countries; it is, indeed, routinely followed to the letter.
[snipped anecdotal evidence]
It is not the religion, per se, that is the problem. It is fundamentalists or extremists who claim to be part of the religion that are the problem.
In case you hadn't noticed, the fundamentalist followers of one of the books number so few that they are hardly a rounding error, while the fundamentalist followers of the other book (while still in a minority) comprise a significant percentage of the followers.
Your point that both the books prescribes barbarism is correct, your conclusion that both the religions are practiced in an equally barbaric manner is not.
I'm a minority race. Save your vitriol for white people.
Don't say that loudly in rural Bavaria.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever" -- David St. Hubbins, Spinal Tap
He was referring to illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, the press as a whole - the ones going on the whole tirade about "fake" news - has decided to call them "undocumented" immigrants. Which is probably what led to your confusion since most people are unfamiliar with that word in this context, so tend to ignore it. (Which is probably why the press is doing it - to try to shape policy by confusing people into conflating illegal immigrants with legal immigrants. It worked on you.)
There's a lot of reasons to dislike Trump, but this isn't one of them. If you're upset about it, direct your anger at the press which intentionally misled you. I'm wondering why people making unauthorized withdrawls at the bank and unlicensed executioners aren't getting the same treatment from them.
Secrecy avails little to nothing. THose that want to know will figure it out and abuse it, but others will not have accessibility to find solutions.
Silence is a state of mime.
Islamists pick and choose verses to follow out of the Koran, just as Christians do with the Bible. The Koran also calls for mandatory assistance to the poor(it is in fact one of the central rules of Islam), if you give food or drink to a person you are bound to protect them with your life and can do them no harm (think the story of Sodom and Gamorrah/Lot), and mercy; meanwhile plenty of Christians get divorced or remarry, let women speak in church, judge other people , and very few donate 10% of their incomes/possessions to the poor. I took care to only mention rules from the New Testament to avoid the whole "Christianity focuses on the NT vs the OT" argument, even though that argument itself furthers my argument that both sides pick and choose which rules of their religion they follow.

Show us a democratic country that is majority Muslim.
All of these are either Islamic democracies or Islamic republics:
Iraq
Iran
Egypt
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Tunisia
Lebanon
Morocco
Turkey
Kuwait
Gambia
Mauritania
Now, to be fair they do have different degrees of freedom, but they all qualify as democratic governments.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for it to be pitted against a slightly greater evil
Or ask yourself if you still have the right to remain in your country if you ask such questions from immigrants.
Hah, we can't even secure our borders you silly man. Fear not! Germany is slowly catching up to America, once you quadruple the immigrants in your country you can proudly lecture others. I'm looking forward to the New Years event and the press suppressions of the mass gropings.

The difference is: the Bible has a New Testament. It's primary message? Scripture can be hard to interpret, so if you think it's telling you to hurt someone, that's how you know you're reading it wrong. That Jesus guy just wouldn't shut up about this: turn the other cheek, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, etc., etc.
The Koran desperately needs its own New Testament, just as Islam desperately needs it's own Reformation. That can only happen from within, of course, but we should recognize it for what it is.
Just in 2016 there were 2455 Islamic attacks in 60 countries, in which 21152 people were killed and 26499 injured. If that number surprises you, it's because the western press doesn't care to report attacks without western victims. Your false equivalence is obvious and foolish.

If all those rules of the OT aren't important, then why did the Council of Nicaea and subsequent generations of scholars and clergy leave them in there? The OT is still part of the Bible, so by choosing not to follow those rules you are proving my point that both religions pick and choose (and different followers of the religions choose differently than others) which to follow. As for Jesus saying turn the other cheek, you are correct. But simply read the Wikipedia page on the Bible and Violence and you will see how Christians have still chose to interpret the Bible as advocating violence, and the page on Christianity and violence is also enlightening.
Personally, I am of the opinion that, as Islam is roughly 600 years newer than Christianity, if we look at what the Chrsitian world was like 600 years ago there are a lot of parallels between Christianity then and Islam now. Christianity had its reformation which left it a much less violent and (as it has modernized) more tolerant religion (there is of course a lot of intolerance left). Islam has the dual issue of not having gone through a reformation and being judged on modern terms while still in it's ancient form. The problem is that change has to come from within and it has to come organically, it can't be forced. And right now I don't see any indications of anything that could cause that change. Maybe if the Mosul Dam collapses and kills hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and displaces millions more it may be apocalyptic enough and attributable to ISIS (and therefore extremist Islam) that it might trigger a reformation or a rise of moderate Islam, but even that is a bit of a stretch.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for it to be pitted against a slightly greater evil
Upon inspection it appears half of those don't even have decent civil liberties. Other useful considerations include stable systems and institutions, reasonable means of holding elected officials accountable and redress, minorities having reasonable access to economic, educational and health resources. Freedom of the press and separation of church and state would be worthy considerations too. Iran is a theocracy with an elected president. Morocco is a monarchy. Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Bangladesh were left out. Uzbekistan had a president for over 45 years. Bangladesh has had 8 coups over the last 45 years, Afghanistan is still super new, so it looks like Indonesia is the best poster child. Indonesia was ruled by two men Sukarno and Suharto for 40 years between 1959 to 1998. Suharto was overthrown and since 1998 it's a functioning multi-party democracy which follows Sharia law presently allows stoning. Thanks for compiling the list of these extremely desirable places to live.
Man blir trött av att gå och göra ingenting.
You asked for Muslim-majority democracies. Those states that I listed all have elected governments. If they are less free it is because they chose so. That's one reason why the US isn't very popular in the rest of the world: we spout on and on about democracy, but whenever a state elects a government or ruler we don't like we call foul. We have to decide what we want for the world: let people chose their own government (very often against their best interests as we just saw for ourselves less than 2 months ago), or force Western-style liberal democracy on people against their will-which of course is kind of the antithesis of democracy to begin with.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for it to be pitted against a slightly greater evil
Desperate people do desperate things. Iran was a moderate country with "Western" values before the Shaw of Iran forced them to support religious extremists. If you want to eliminate extremists you need to eliminate desperate people. Ensure everyone has food/clothing/shelter/basic healthcare, and eliminate systemic violence and abuse. Do this for everyone on earth and the extremists will fade away.
He may well be a bigot. But the line is taken very much out of context.
What Trump is saying is that a lot of the people arriving here aren't the hard working immigrants after a better life that many on the left want us to believe. Some of them are actually criminals. A disproportionate amount of them are.
Now, he may well be wrong. I don't know if he is or not. But nobody gives a shit about the actual point he's making because it's so much easier to quote just that one line and dismiss him as a bigot.
But Trump's supporters know what he's saying. They realise that the people who say "look see!!! See! SEEE!!!!! He's a BIGOT!!!!" completely failed to understand this simple point, despite their fancy college education. So not only are they failing to address the point. They're discrediting themselves so they're no longer taken seriously when they do have a point to make.
And people wonder how Trump won.
Most of these are democratic like Russia is democratic or even North Korea. All candidates in Iran have be approved by the ruling Guardian Council a group of right leaning clerics.
Fantastic, how about addressing the migrant rape. If they're being raped prior to entering the US, who is doing the raping, and why is it considered bigoted to point it out? I specifically cited liberal sites since they're evidently more credible in some circles.

Germany has no borders to secure.
We are surrounded by Schengen states.
Regarding the groping we will see how tha goes this time.
The painfull truth is not that it happened, but that:
a) so many veilants got away with it
b) basically no german man stood up and beat them up
c) and most women silently endured it as well
The police only got 'informed' days later when more and more women realized: oh, I was not the only one!
And after all, as it most obviously was some kind of organized action, we still have no clue about the men behind.

You're right, he only called the one coming to America criminals, ...
If someone comes into the country illegally, that (by definition) makes them a criminal.
"I'm wondering why people making unauthorized withdrawls at the bank ..."
I think the preferred term is "undocumented withdrawals" these days.
Oh you must be Trump's campagin manager. Thanks for clarifying that trump didn't actually say all the things he said and that criminal means something different in this context.
Did you try showing them your own hand drawn image of Mohammed? Did you criticize Islam in any way? Did you ask them if violent jihad or suicide bombings against civilians could ever be justified? Did you tell them you are gay or had gay friends?
.
If not, then it doesn't mean anything that you say all the muslims you've ever encountered have never attacked or condemned you
Ah, but the religion isn't the problem, yeah sure. Try telling that to Molly Norris. Radicalizing your peaceful, everyday friendly muslims into murderous maniac is so easily, apparently, that we have to censor cartoonists in our own country and make sure armed police are present for any mohammed themed art shows.
To even say that it is just the fundamentalists or extremists that is the problem is to pretend that they appear out of a vacuum, and to completely ignore that it happens almost exclusively with this particular religion. If that isn't disingenuous, I don't know what is.
Not really. The FBI did a really good job over the decades. So did European governments. Problem is, they're bringing in a lot of people that have been taught from the age of 3 that it's ok to kill infidels. They teach them that every year. A few people they can deal with, 10's of thousands is a lot harder.
It's simple, don't let them into the country. Send 'em back.
The alternative is we won't have a Europe in probably 10 years. Probably won't have a United States either. We'll all be slaves, under Sharia law.

There's no call for gun BANS. Only better gun control.
This is absolutely wrong. Not only do people call for completely banning specific guns (like the AR-15), plenty of people call for banning guns in private hands entirely.
Why do you assume TVs are insured? They simply aren't, for most people. Moreover, I can't be sure that the robber only wants the TV, and in any case, they have no right to be in my house. If they refuse to leave when told to, I have every right to use force to make them.
