Tokyo 2020 Olympic Medals To Be Made From Recycled Phones (silicon.co.uk)

Mickeycaskill quotes a report from Silicon.co.uk: The medals for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be made from recycled mobile phones in an effort to engage the Japanese nation and meet sustainability criteria. The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee has called on the Japanese public to donate their "discarded or obsolete electronic devices" to provide the eight tonnes of metal required for the production of the medals. The production process will reduce this eight tonnes down to around two, enough to produce 5,000 Olympic and Paralympic medals. Collection boxes will be installed in the stores of partner organizations NTT DOCOMO and the Japan Environmental Sanitation Center (JESC) from April, with the collection ending when the eight-tonne target is reached.

  It is odd but usually the "Workers Party" is opposed to Immigration because that is who competes with their jobs. And the pro Corporation party is for immigration because it is source of cheap labor. The alignment of these positions are upside down in the US political arrangement.

  The worker's parties came to realize that progress and movement of labour are good. Just like they don't advocate smashing machines any more. Rather, they favour support for workers who need to retrain and gain new skills. Better to swim with the tide than against it.
  It is interesting how conservatives have no adopted the politics of anger over immigration now.

  Republicans, yellow cowards really. the numbers don't match some kind of threat to the country. But X-ray my balls at the the airport, Yesiree! Make the local police into the Stasi to inform to immigration, of course. How can we staff farms with slaves with no legal protection if they can rely on the police.   If you are talking about the GOP, I have seen 0 platform positions to indicate they have an issue with LEGAL immigration. No one, not even progressive Europe is for opening the borders and letting in all who come. Why do you think that porous borders are a good thing? All the GOP is trying to do is secure the borders, not reduce the 2 million legal immigrants we have now. The H1B position could possibly be looked at this way, but Trump's current direction with this is not to reduce the number of H1B workers, but remove the slave labor portions of the H1B program by forcing H1B wages up where they should be since these are supposed to be people so skilled that no US citizen can do the job.

  Looks like they're talking about metric tons. This page says that it'll take a total of 1,999,200 grams of metal (9,996 g Gold; 1,232,840 g Silver; 736,372 g Copper; 16,660 g Zinc; 3,332 g Tin), which is about 2 metric tons. At market prices, that's 114,781,936 yen or $1,019,462. Guess they're saying it'll take four times that weight of actual phones to get that much metal ("The production process will reduce this eight tonnes down to around two").

Let's see, the current medals are mostly silver and bronze with traces of copper and gold. Do cell phones have a lot of silver in them?

  Lead-free solders in commercial use may contain tin, copper, silver, bismuth, indium, zinc, antimony, and traces of other metals
  Companies go to great lengths to use as little solder as possible (ours saved almost 10 grand a year on a single low volume product by reducing paste by 20%) and of that tiny amount of solder only a minuscule amount of it might be silver (silver is not required for lead free solder)
  so the amount of effort, energy and nasty ass chemicals to extract the possible silver would be a ridiculous waste of time

  Obviously wrong. Some materials recycle economically. eg.
  - Asphalt
  - Paper
  - some fabrics
  - Lead in Batteries
  - rare earths in auto catalyzers
  - some plastics ....
  Basically, when your application uses a lot of the stuff, it's often economical to recycle. For small quantities, like phones, not so much --> needs a push from Taxation.

  It isn't "silver-based" it's silver-baring. For reflow solder, in terms of lead-free solutions, the most common these days is Tin-silver-copper. The most common alloy is only 3% silver. Some alloys are as low as 0.3%. The amount of silver in a cell phone is on the order of a couple micro-grams at best. The same is true for gold; since it's electroplated only a couple atoms thick. There are tons of websites and YouTube vids about reclaiming precious metals from electronics, and absolutely no one in their right mind uses cell phones because they just leave you with a mess of ground plastic and silica and noxious chemicals and nothing to show for it.

  99% of statistics are made up to prove a point. Source on that? There are things which lend themselves to recycling quite well, either because it's easy (such as in paper), the results are valuable (such as lead acid batteries), or the removal of some waste from the environment is desired (Lead batteries again)

Even though I mislike President Trump (nee: Drumpf), rhetoric and sheer energy are extremely unlikely to be of any use in opposing him. If we (collectively) leave off anger and knee-jerk reactions and instead choose to exert a calm continuous opposition to the current administration I suspect we will gain both a more receptive audience for our views and a far greater effectiveness in our efforts.

  Perhaps you should point out specific policies you don't like, and why you don't like them. So far all I have seen in opposition is people who didn't even bother to read his EOs. Even the courts haven't actually ruled on the legality of the EO to fix the immigration from the 7 countries who failed to upgrade their systems.

Olympic is the biggest event all around the world. I think is is a great idea to promote recycled products and make people aware about recycling terms and their importance. The Environment also recycle its composition to make something even better. In today's universe people see recycled as if it's not new, it has been used by others. But guess what, everything that we use has been used by others earlier. Recycling should be part of life because the elements present inside the Earth is limited and the population of World is very big in comparison to the resources that Earth have.
