Apple CEO Tim Cook Tackles Truth in the Digital Age (cnbc.com)
Apple CEO Tim Cook visited the University of Glasgow yesterday to be awarded an honorary doctorate. During the Q&A session, one audience member asked Cook to tell what the future looks like. Following is Cook's response: "The world is going through an enormous change. We used to watch three or four people tell us the news, and generally speaking most of us trusted that ... now you are growing up in an environment where everyone is telling you the news and everyone is trying to influence your opinion on something," Cook said. "Generally society hasn't moved as fast as technology has ... so all of us have been put in a position to make sure that when we hear something we automatically take it as our opinion that we think through the different views on it and unfortunately make sure it is accurate as well."
Someone will say that this is a defense of Trump and demand he stop supporting a nazi/racist/sexist/etc, then the boycotts will begin on Twitter, then he'll have to apologize.
This is the world we live in now.
And Apple has been a great influencer itself.
Why has the US embraced a Nazi like Donald Trump?
The US is an ****EMBARRASSMENT**** all over the world. Trump is a Nazi and Steve Bannon is a Nazi.
Fuck this shit.
Someone asked a question "what future looks like", Cook responds with some fake news rant lol. Time Cook is a typical reddit commenter confirmed.
Steve appears to me every night, surrounded by a bluish glow and tells me The Truth.
And those 3-4 people lied to us, everytime. Always. They still do on CNN, Fox, NYT; WaPo etc.
But by now we also have more people telling us about the news. Yes there is more chaos now, but there is also more truth.
E.g. all the mainstream news about Syria. About how the poor people of Aleppo were bombed by the evil Russians, massacred by the monstrous syrian army. Was shown on every one of the mentioned 3-4 news channels.
All lies.
So good riddance to those 3-4 people from Fox, CNN, NYT, WaPo and fuck them sideways.
Umm...does anyone else think he's really not focused on running Apple like Steve did?
As soon as someone uses that, back away slowly. It's invariably you need to believe what I'm telling you rather than testable and verifiable reality. Just look at how many conspiracy nutters, religious zealots and extreme left/right crazies use it.
And this is coming from someone that claims they invented iThing design when it's copied from Sony blueprints and uses off the shelf components made by LG, Samsung, ARM and 20 year old BSD code. But their icons, man, look, they've changed. TRUTH!
This exactly why I don't belive a word Tim Cook says!
As in "promoting", or "causing injury to"?
It's too little to make love with!
Correct Mr. Cook "Generally society hasn't moved as fast as technology has". Some of us are still engaged in practices like keeping corporate cash holdings in off shore tax shelters and claiming that there is a tech worker shortage when in reality it's just greed driving corporate profits in the form of hiring cheaper H-1B visas that are willing to put up with unreasonable working conditions so they can make more money. Some things never change.
We'll make great pets
People are generally idiots who are incapable of rational thought and will believe anything they're told. Anyone with half a brain has know this for years.
Have you ever tried to get conservative news on the Apple news app. It is impossible. Even when you ask for a service that you want for conservative news apple injects non-conservative view points into the stream and does not show you your conservative news source. News is not longer impartial or factual. Tim Cook only thinks his news is the correct news. Love you Tim. Wish you could be a little more introspective.
i refuse to be told whats what by a guy that has slaves, and is a faggot, to boot
sorry mr fag, im not taking it. fuck you, and fuck your company
Right now the world has a lot of very loud assholes. this encourages others to be assholes.
Stay away from anyone acting extreme right and left, just shut them completely out of your life as they are the scummiest of people.
If they cant have a civilized and calm discussion, eject them from your life rapidly. yes even family.
My problem is these people are infecting everything, A discussion about antenna theory and basics turns into a shitshow of aggressive posturing when you mention something like "you should not use a wire wound resistor like that because it can introduce unwanted reactance" is met with... foaming at the mouth insults and turd throwing. People refuse to back up their statements contrary to known science and education and start blathering on to prop up their strawman.
Honestly I'm really done with people in general, americans are empowered right now to be assholes and I want nothing to do with it.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.
Cook is way too optimistic. If all of us stopped for a minute to think things through, we wouldn't have been in the mess we are in. Can't blame him though. A large part of the man's job is to think, so he thinks (pun intended) it comes natural for everyone. It's the reverse Dunning–Kruger effect.
Someone told Democrat presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson in the 1950s, “You are doing great. All thinking men are with you.” “No,” Stevenson replied. “I need a majority.”
What does objective 'truth' even mean in a postmodern era, where 'your truth' is not 'my truth' and reality is just a competing set of narratives supported by carefully-selected information?
The Alt-Right is just a faction on the Right that has differences w/ other conservatives. Breitbart hardly equals all, or even most of the portion of the media that is conservative
Point Cook made was that in the past, only 3 or 4 people told us the news, and all of them were, for want of a better term, Left-of-Center. This had been borne out election after election, where 90+% of journalists would reveal that they voted for the Democrats. In no walk of life do you get such homogeneous opinions, so when that happens, people who disagree w/ them are justified in wondering whether they are lying to them. That's why we had things like Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, Drudge Report, Blaze TV, Breitbart, et al. While that may look like a lot, keep in mind that if you have just basic TV, FNC is not a part of the deal, in which case your only choices are ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS. Even the Fox Broadcast Channel does not have the same bent as FNC, and even FNC has its share of Liberals like Sheppard Smith, Juan Williams and Julie Rogansky. So even w/ all this, the Left certainly had an overwhelming advantage when it came to the media.
The way Social Media changes all this is that everybody is a potential news source, and w/ that, comes all the trolling, but seriously, this is no different from Usenet - for those who remember. Flame wars are just a part of it. Also, w/ media bias being what it's been, people on the right who are disgusted by it have left them in droves, and are either turning to these alternate sources, or even hearing directly from the horse's mouth. I mean, why would a Trump supporter go to CNN or NBC or even FNC when they can directly read his Twitter account. And the same goes for Trump haters - they can go to Hilary, Bernie, Schumer, Warren or any number of Trump haters out there.
The thing that the Left is bitter about is that their monopoly and control on information flow is gone. If anyone can pull out their smartphone, videotape something and then put it on Facebook, how do their 'journalists' who simply sit in their studios and bloviate justify their 6-7 figure salaries?
That's the new cliche of you people - that 'reality has a Left Wing bias'. If it did, everything Obama and your side told us about the economy and how great we were doing would have been true. Our kids would have been at the top of the world in education, and companies wouldn't have been searching for talent abroad.
Actually, the 'alt-right' is real, but not in the way that Leftist clowns like to depict it. It's a genuine fissure on the Right
Traditional Conservatism - of the type that the Bushes and the GOP establishment loved - was the international, free trade, open borders & immigration, service Wall Street policies across the board. Also, they were stuck in the Cold War era, and Russia simply succeeded the Soviet Union as the #1 enemy. For those who think it's a personality issue w/ Putin, they were not supportive of Yeltsin either. But even though Communism was dead - at least in terms of losing the Soviet Union and all of Eastern Europe, they pretended that Communism was still the major ideological enemy. Granted, it's making a strong showing in the US w/ Sen Warren and in the UK w/ Jeremy Corbin, but it's not the threat to the rest of the world the way it was during the Cold War. Islam has replaced it in that aspect, but the traditional Conservatives are still cozy w/ the likes of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Islamic countries.
The Alt Right has for the first time put a lot of these sacred cows to the slaughter (being a Hindu, I don't like this analogy, but it's all I can think of at the moment). They recognize that Islam is the biggest threat to the West, which is why they're not obsessed w/ Russia in the way that the Republican establishment is. They recognize that trade deals like NAFTA haven't worked for the US, and are happy to revisit it. They are the only ones looking at H1B abuse: the traditional Conservatives want to service the businesses that want them, while the Liberals want the future votes of the new citizens. They are the ones questioning whether NATO is still relevant, given its inclusion of Turkey, which is on the Islamic side of this conflict.
While Trump may have moved this a bit, and Bannon is key in getting a lot of alt right policies in, the party as a whole hasn't yet shifted that way, except maybe in the Rust Belt states that Trump won this time around. Hopefully, by the next elections, they succeed in taking over the GOP, and purging the likes of McCain, Graham, Collins and so on.
Society doesn't need to evolve past greed. What society needs is to evolve past coercion. In the absence of coercion, greed is merely something to point and laugh at.
All of the real problems in this world can be traced back to coercion, whether legal or illegal, public or private.
You remind me of the people who say that religion is the root of all evil. That's just as absurd. In the absence of coercion, religion is merely something to point and laugh at.
People on here seem bombarded by massive amounts of mostly partial but generally conflicting data provided by many news sources. Each news source appears more focused on quantity as opposed to quality and news is far more about opinion than fact.
I am impressed that the typical person today prefers to receive news that makes them feel smarter because it is always possible to find a news source that simply tells them what they want to hear as opposed to properly informing and even educating the consumer.
Slashdot is generally frequented by a "more educated readership" and yet we have such diverse backgrounds and interests that we favor debate over discussion or exchange of opinions of common observations. We display clear signs of choosing teams or camps. Many people (often myself included) favor arguing in favor of opinion with lack of regard or respect for others.
Imagine a less informed and more easily influenced general public.
Consider that often we express our own flavor of popular opinion. We universally lean towards expressing black and white opinions. Moderation and cooperation is often perceived as pandering or weakness. We almost never express positive opinions either. We favor criticism and rarely the constructive type.
If we the "educated few" sell ourselves to others as intellectuals with a clearer understanding of our world behave primarily in a purely negative and critical fashion, imagine the example we are setting for others. They will learn that to sell their appearance to others as more intelligent than they are, they should present themselves as combative and contrary to other people's opinions.
I hope that instead we could teach ourselves to behave more intelligently as better role models that learn to speak before we speak. We can use our intellect to solve problems as opposed to simply always identifying them and blaming others for them.
An example, people ask me regularly what I feel about Donald Trump as president. I explain that while I don't like his behavior and don't know enough about him to properly form an opinion, I would rather support him when he behaves well and explain to him in a civil manor when he performs poorly and hopefully recommend a means of him doing better while still achieving his goals. I believe his primary goal is infamy. I believe he wants to leave a mark on the world and is willing to do anything he believes is necessary to achieve immortality. I thibk he believes that by manipulating the loudest and most dominant people in leadership, he will be given free reign to build a wall that can be seen from space and maybe even set the world on edge. He will achieve his goals too. I am sure that when presented with sound reasoning and concepts he would be willing to support it and make it happen if it will help him achieve greatness. I believe we can manipulate him into doing great things that are good for us all... all we need is an angle which will feed his ego sufficiently.
Is that really true? I doubt it.
Tim Cook is gay. I hate gays. Can't be trusted.
I have not bought a single Apple product since Tim Cook is gay was made public.
Boycott gay Apple!
Whilst it's true that anyone can influence you online, the missing and important point is that social media is built around a small number of platforms, and whoever controls the platforms controls the narrative.
the people using violence to intimidate their political opponents, and the people starting fires and breaking windows and boycotting businesses are (as ALWAYS) the people on the LEFT (just like the National Socialist German Workers Party in the 1930s - some things never change).
After all that talk about violence at Trump rallys, it turned out that the Hillary team was funding, training and organizing the thugs that went to those rallies to start the fights and Trump was right that his people were not the instigators when he told them to punch back (go to YouTube and look at the undercover project veritas videos of the Democrat campaign thugs bragging)
Of course, the violent right wing theme was proven by all the violent riots in 2008 when people on the right were freaked-oout by the election of Obama.... oh, wait, there WERE no riots by people on the right back after the Obama elections. Right-wing entertainers in 2008 and 2012 did not tell Americans to boycott Democrat businesses. Right-wing politicians in 2008 did not oppose Obama's cabinet picks en-masse (the Republicans in the Senate nearly all voted to confirm even the nomiinees they found highly objectionable). Right wing college kids burned nothing, broke no windows, ran no Obama supporters off of campus to prevent their free speech. Right wing mobs did not march through the streets blocking traffic and intimidating the public.
The full-on accusation of "NAZI" does not truly apply to either side of the spectrum in the US where neither side has massacred millions of people of a specific ethinicity, but YOUR side has been flinging that 'NAZI' term around like monkeys flinging poop, so its only fair that you face the facts on the below-the-level-of-geneocide similarities.
The brown shirted violent intimidation and business boycotting is and alway has been leftist. NAZI brown shirts trashed the businesses of their opponents, demanded boycotts of the businesses of their opponents, beat-up their opponents, screamed and yelled and marched throught the streets in huge mobs, while blocking the speech of their opponents. Neither you nor Bannon has killed millions, so neither is NAZI-like at that level, but if you want to look at tactics then Your team is the NAZI-like team, and you're too stupid and ill-informed to even notice that YOUR side is the side using EXACTLY the same tactics as the actual NAZIs
his first name is Robert, and he used to work for Bill clinton. He can now be seen, like most left-wing flunkies, "teaching" the young-and-gullible at a university.
oops
I thought you were looking for 1/4th Reich.
My bad
What's unfortunate about making sure something is accurate? The former "gatekeepers" weren't that good at it.
Eh, tl;dr version: We are on our own
“He’s not deformed, he’s just drunk!”
Are Nazi racists fascist bigots!
Way to make innovative products, Tim.
Nice job with the watch.
The only people buying your crap are people who already own your crap.
Please fire Tim. He has no idea what he's doing and is putting all of his employees in jeopardy as he polarizes needlessly.
Get back to making insanely great stuff.
Throughout the 90s, nobody even thought about Islam: everybody assumed that since the Cold War was over, we would live happily ever after. That despite things like the First WTC bombing, the Khobar Towers bombing, the Embassy bombings in Kenya & Tanzanya, the USS Cole and finally 9/11.
And since 9/11, there have been more that 30,000 deadly Jihad attacks worldwide, this before there were any US troops in Afghanistan or Iraq. Yeah, there were US troops in KSA, but that was at the behest of the Saudi government in response to Saddam Hussein's 1991 occupation of Kuwait. People make the same assumptions you do b'cos they know nothing about the Islamic doctrines of Jihad, and the necessity to keep spreading Islamic law worldwide until Islam becomes supreme
And as everybody knows, bottoms make crap tops :)

... in the comment section.
The fucking "press," died a few years ago. Journalists have all but disappeared.
"Reporters," are actually actors who go from the makeup chair to the anchor desk on visual media to read the teleprompter.
MSM is tapping into external content like YouTube as filler. I tell my wife, while watching David Muir talking up a cute kid tublet, "That video snippet was viral two days ago in the intertoobs.
"News," has been monetized and is actually, "entertainment."
Know who's fault all that shit is?
Surprisingly, it's you and me.
We are served that which which attracts our eyeballs.
We don't want no fucking real news.
We want sensational stories and we enjoy criticizing ourselves for our goddam tastes in "news."
It little behooves the best of us to comment on the rest of us.
You have to triangulate to the truth by being open-minded to all opinions and then practicing critical thinking. Obviously a problem these days - but the recipe/process is 100% clear and well-understood for many generations!
People want an easy answer and the simple truth is there is none.
