Apple Announces New 10.5-Inch iPad Pro With Narrower Side Bezels, 120Hz Refresh Rate Display (9to5mac.com)
At WWDC 2017 today, Apple unveiled a brand new iPad Pro with a 10.5-inch display and 40% narrower bezels. The new iPad features a 50% brighter True Tone display and "ProMotion" technology which increase refresh rates up to 120hz. 9to5Mac reports: The new iPad Pro includes dynamic refresh rate adjustments, screens move from 24hz to 48hz to 120hz. This maximizes battery life and performance, when you need it. The A10x Fusion chip improves CPU and GPU by at least 40%. Cameras have also been upgraded with the same sensor as the iPhone 7 on the back and the front. Apple demoed a photo app called "Affinity Photo," to demonstrate the 120hz refresh rates. Apple says new iPad Pro performance compares favorably with a desktop computer. This includes incredibly fast selections and fluid Apple Pencil interactions. Both iPad models start with 64GB of memory and maxes out to 500GB at the high-end. There are also several new software features for iPad, coming this fall with iOS 11: A new customizable Dock that provides quick access to frequently used apps and documents from any screen; Improved multitasking, including a redesigned app switcher that brings Spaces to iOS, making it easier to move between apps or pairs of active apps, used in Split View and now Slide Over; Multi-Touch Drag and Drop, which is available across the system to move text, photos and files from one app to another, anywhere on the screen; A new document scanner in Notes, which lets users easily scan single or multi-page documents, removes shadows and uses powerful image filters to enhance readability; and Deeper integration with Apple Pencil, with support for inline drawing to write along text in Notes and Mail, Instant Markup to easily sign documents, annotate PDFs or draw on screenshots, and a new Instant Notes feature, which opens Notes from the Lock Screen by simply tapping Apple Pencil on the display. New searchable handwriting makes it easy to search for handwritten text or characters.
i dont think im the only one who has this sentiment..
My 2012 LG television has 120Hz refresh too.
Will Apple be adding 3D next? My TV came with four pair of glasses... but I've never opened those boxes.

You may need the 120 Hz refresh rate to monitor changes in Apple's stock price.

Surface Pro can run Visual Studio. Android can run AIDE. I guess by now, it takes courage to make a tablet that can't build apps for itself.
I liked my prehistoric ipad 2 a lot, great when relaxing in the sofa, on trips for browsing and light photo editing and presenting, a colleague and I even used ours in 1-1 customer meetings - it was a more relaxed kind of presentation / demo than using a laptop. Unfortunately one of the last system updates it could handle made it terribly slow, it was since relegated to being an oversized wake up alarm.
I had thought of buying a kindle fire hd8, maInly to save money, but this new 10" ipad pro looks excellent, and it is of course well integrated with my other apple devices and software.
No cynical hate from me - I bet a few will call me gay now etc etc, I do think that it seems like a very well engineered tablet. I get that between ios and android, they are both great and different rather than one is better than the other.
All I want is to be able to delete apps from the search screen. iOS is becoming mature enough that apps are being retired. I have no idea where they are. I have hundreds of app on my iPad which have been collecting dust over the years. All I want to do is type in the name, swipe left, and have it gone.

a tablet you can only use in landscape mode without smudging the screen.
If true, the single threaded performance of an iPad Pro will now rival that of the MacBook Pro - and be about twice the speed as the fastest Android device. From Geekbench - 4667 (A10x) vs 4282 (i7-6920HQ) vs 1953 (Exynos 8890).

Dude, maybe it's because Apple's WWDC is going on right now?

Six separate Apple announcements on slashdot's first page : enough !
Can't you just summarize all announcements in a single post ?
zzzzzz
I want a workstation.
Like the iMac Pro you got in the same set of announcements?
Both iPad models start with 64GB of memory and maxes out to 500GB at the high-end.
No they do not. They start with 64GB of STORAGE, going up to 512GB at the high-end. Not exactly surprising that an Apple user doesn't understand the difference.
None of the released specs state how much MEMORY they have, but the previous iPad Pro had 2GB so maybe they'll be couragous and go all the way to 4GB now.
It has more to do with the fact that it is Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this week.

No he is not. There is no 120Ghz content for tablet. So there is not practical reason for it. On workstation, it's justified, because computer games, video editing, 3d programs, etc...
Sure, but why not do it as a single "News from WWDC" rather than posting, what is it now, six, seven, eight articles all on what seem like pretty minor announcements from Apple? Like these guys did, for example. The only thing in that whole pile of little tweaks and updates of any real significance was the HomePod, and even then it's just a catch-up to the Echo and Google Home.
Steve would have given them something to post about...
I think the iMac Pro sounds good. I like the many cores etc. Since I am a video editing hobbyist, I sure can use them. I have a fully loaded 27" late 2013 iMac today which did cost me a small fortune. I have an extra cinema display attached to it and external RAID enclosure for more space and speed.
But I would really like a more modular machine. Right now I could use a better GPU for rendering. Of course the CPUs are maxed out too, but a new GPU would be great and could extend the life of the machine.
I hate that I have to ditch a perfectly fine 27" monitor, well the entire machine just to upgrade. At least I got the better CPU and GPU.
Since I don't have a money tree in my garden, it becomes expensive. :D
Besides from OS X, it is mostly FCP X that keeps me on the Apple platform. Not having to tinker with hardware was also a part of it, but I guess that is why you pay the premium price. I thought about building a Hackingtosh as that would enable me to do small upgrades.
I guess I have to start saving up money to get a new machine next year. :)
Dude, maybe it's because Apple's WWDC is going on right now?
There's still no need for six posts from the user's standpoint. You can have a WWDC roundup every day, instead. The only way having it in six separate posts helps anyone is that it helps Slashdot fill its front page. An easier way would be to put some more of the better suggestions on the front page, any fool can see that this is not what is happening. The quality of content on Slashdot continues to deteriorate, because the active user base continues to shrink. There's only about two dozen people writing most of the comments, and every one of them has about two dozen trolls, and that's about it that's left on this site.
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
It's not even new. Lots of mobile devices have had variable frame rates for years, to save battery life. 120Hz might be kinda new, but it only really exists to make up for crappy LCD transition times and it doesn't say if they are combining it with backlight modulation to improve video.

The new MacOS will support external GPU cards. Right now only available to developers, but that is bound to change.
Can I develop for the iPhone(swift) on it?
If you read the original article, the 40% improvement is in GPU performance. Thought it was a little too good to be true - but impressive all the same.

and but its from apple; Yuk.

Oh, apparently, at least in the sound department, the HomePod is head and shoulders above everyone else. Hardly "just catch-up" when you fly past the others in the first stride...
