YouTube CEO: Facebook Should 'Get Back To Baby Pictures' (cnet.com)

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki won't divulge her biggest fear about competing with Facebook, but she will give them some free advice. From a report: "They should get back to baby pictures," Wojcicki said Monday at the Code Media conference in Huntington Beach, California. Video has been an obsession for Facebook, as it tries to swipe the most advertising dollars migrating off television before YouTube can get them. Facebook has been aggressively advancing the number of clips and live streams that bubble up to the top of your News Feed and has rolled out a central hub for TV-like programming called Watch. "You always have to take competition seriously. You don't win by looking backwards; you win by looking at your customers and looking forward," she said.

      CEO of the #1 spot don't like competition, CEO of the #2 spot does, until they get to #1.

      While the best course of action when the #1 spot gets competition, it to figure out why #2 is growing, honestly validate if you are doing something wrong, figure out why you customers may be moving away. Then make a plan of action to adjust for this.

      I think a lot of it is the YouTube algorithm, and DMCA controls in place. Which may not be current with today's population.
      A lot of content creators have recently switched off YouTube to other sources. Because the Algorithm requires them to dump content out to stay current, vs make good content, and also it is way too easy for someone to demonetize your video during its peak viewing period, by claiming copyright breach, say from a poor review of a product, or just some other fare use.

      If the content creators especially the ones who make the best stuff, isn't getting their dues. They will switch to other platforms. If your platform isn't showing stuff people want to see, then the viewers will switch too.

      However for the CEO in a public statement, can only really say their product is good and the other product is lacking.

      It's funny because you could just as easily fake all the views, clicks, and subscriptions you're depending on slashdot for. It's such a small small number that youtube wouldn't ever notice. Besides your "subscriber link" trick is already dishonest enough to get you a strike if some minimum wage tubemonkey decides they need to pad their weekly numbers, people routinely get random strikes for insanely minuscule transgressions.

      Like why don't you just get all the passwords for your google sockpuppet accounts and game your numbers over a proxy? Or ask your friends to give you that initial bump?
      I get what you're doing, a small number of clicks and shit will ensure you're near the top of the list if you generate content on topics that aren't on the social radar yet.... but what you're doing here is building a huge embarrassing internet footprint. If you ever get any sort of popularity the trolls will come. Find what you've done here, and blog about your every tiny mistake. AC posts on Slashdot used to generate more clicks before creimer decided to go crazy.

      Everybody hates creimer, especially other online marketers and although I would never do anything illegal, I hear other marketers might when it comes to creimer.

    The one thing that makes FB not worth the time as a video platform are the mid-roll ads. With YT, $10, and I don't worry about ads, or just download what I want to watch for when I'm out camping and want to watch something before crashing. FB, a 10 second video can have 30 second ads in it, making it all but unwatchable, with zero skip buttons. Because of this, coupled with the fact that almost everything on FB is a video (most static pictures have been turned into looping vids even), it is too much of a pain to bother with for any meaningful content.

      Profitable: def. 2.beneficial; useful.

      Feeding the YouTube algorithm with external traffic (50% from Slashdot) is beneficial for building channel authority. For example, the Jake Paul suicide scandal didn't blow up from internal traffic on YouTube. It blew up from external traffic as the controversy raged on in the social media for nine days before YouTube responded.

      It's fun making fun of the autistic weirdo who talks about marrying young girls but also pretends to be a young girl online.

      Also, "channel authority"? It's a channel with only 7 subcribers, where videos have only a dozen views. There's no "authority" at all, it's just a barely-viewed channel one of a million channels on Youtube.

      I mean I guess you get enough external traffic that you'll show up in search results if you start covering topics earlier than everyone else but the amount of external traffic that you get is small enough that you could have generated more in an hour by hitting up wifi hotspots with different mobile browsers on the way to the library and then used the library computer and walked home.

      That's easy enough that someone who doesn't work in IT could do it. I'd expect that you're probably smart enough to figure out how to do it from the comfort of your own home instead of pissing off people on the internet.

      You do realize this is the birthplace of the GNAA I mean people are chill here but it seems like a stupid waste of time compared to what you could be doing and it could easily blow up in your face bad. I know I wouldn't invite trolls from slashdot into my real life.

      Slashdot has a fraction of it's former traffic but is alive enough. The biggest threat to the site is funding followed by people who come here to post AT the board instead of honestly attempting to have discussion. That's YOU. Who comes here spam advertisments and SEO their other projects.
      But it doesn't matter anymore because you're safely contained at -1 and when I downvote your posts offtopic I usually find that other people are modding you as a troll or flamebait. So we can safely say you're never coming out of your -1 hole. Slashdot is full of weird race condition bugs so it'll be cool if maybe one day you can become our first -2!

      Users and content producers should stop donating their personal resources to private, centrally controlled, for-profit distribution platforms.

      The dream of internet video is complete freedom (as in speech) of distribution and consumption with all profit being received by the creator. No middleman taking the money, no gatekeeper controlling speech, no advertiser polluting the medium.

      That is what I've mostly seen is recipes in video format. I sure hope they actually link to a real recipe, the video does a good job of selling that I should make it, but not a great job at helping me actually do so.

    Here's what I mean: -

    They *force* ads which isn't necessarily bad. What I loathe are the their numbers. Ads are jus to too many.

    YouTube's computer interface is just unfriendly. Why do I have to lose visual of playing video simply because I have chosen to read through comments or browse through related video?

    Apparently, these small user interface tweaks aren't obvious to my learned and capable friends at YouTube. Sad!

      I only preview videos in the youtube interface. Then I download them (with YouTube Downloader HD) and actually watch them. This is the only way I can watch some content, because embedded VLC appears over the top of flash video. If I click, the video plays over the video. Jay Leno's Garage is an example. I literally cannot watch it without downloading it.

    YouTube is superior for video-sharing for three reasons -

    1) You don't need to have a YouTube account to watch videos. I can send my (77-year-old) dad a YouTube link and he can just watch it. While this is possible with Facebook, it's a pain and you're constantly told to sign up.

    2) Facebook sticks ads in the middle of videos. I suppose YouTube could do this sooner or later, but right now they don't.

    3) Facebook search is hot garbage. With YouTube I can pretty much find whatever I'm looking for fairly easily.

    One day I need someone to explain to me what Viemo is for, though.

      Viemo is paid platform for hosting videos. Eli the Computer Guy loved YouTube for five years when ad revenues was plentiful. Now he hates YouTube for diminishing ad revenues in recent years. He set up a couple of paywalled websites with Viemo hosting his videos. Subscribers pay $5 per month to see his recent 50 videos. Video 51 appears on YouTube for free so he can maintain his audience and advertise his paywalled websites on YouTube.

      Facebook was made intentionally unusable on any level for someone not logged in into Facebook. YouTube works without logging in.

      As people abandoning FB, this closeness will accelerate the decline.

      You're missing the other thing. In youtube you have a feedback mechanism. You can say why you're not interested in a video. You can't do crap in Facebook other than hit back, wonder where the post you were going to read next is... switch to chronological order because Facebook's algorithm sucks... then next month they come out with more "features" to shove more ads down your throat... meh.

      My youtube feed before I started providing feedback was just total junk with product placements and shit all over it.       I get them in Canada all the time. Look at the timeline, and see the yellow dots on it? Those are POTENTIAL ad slots. Sometimes on some videos, it will fade out, play the ad, then resume where it paused (a few seconds back,. so you can get the context).

      It depends on the monetization model - content creators can choose to have no monetization, monetization with a banner ad (the yellow spots will indicate when one will pop up on the screen), monetization with a pre-roll ad (most common, an ad plays before the video), and pre-roll and intertitial ads with breaks. These are more for longer form videos of 10 or so minutes or more - short videos only have pre-roll and banner ads.

      I have seen demonetized videos, and those are sweet - no ads anywhere.

The UI is atrociously designed, and laggy beyond compare. And my potato may be outdated, but I've got eight cores and sixteen gigs, there's no excuses for this kind of nonsense. (Youtube is plenty responsive.)

      It seems like Chris is a victim here. He keeps on reading those SEO, youtube algorithm, basically get rich quick sites. He doesn't realize that he is the fish for them since they make money off him with their own scheme. Then, he wastes his time trying to implement what those sites suggest and he ends up disturbing people.

      I mean, those crooks tell Chris that he has to build personal brands and he goes on the Internet and makes everything about himself public!

      I believe we should bring this up at our next meeting with Nancy Guerrero. He might not be our only patient victim of such on-line abuse.

    If you want to compete with Facebook do that. Twitch and Mixer treat their Creators WAY better and Facebook is the #1 social platform in the world. Amazon is also positioning itself to compete with YouTube as well.

    Why would they share them on facebook when they're sitting right next to each other?
    Though you can't judge a book by it's cover I also find it highly out of character for an old lady. Not that they have cell phones and facebook back when most people were still using dumb phones and myspace was just starting to die.

    But because sweet old ladies don't usually talk during movies. These must have been the douchiest old ladies I've ever seen.
    Since this is 2009 did they happen to be sporting scumbag steve hats along with their other douche accessories and behaviors.
