NYT: Lynchings Around the World are Linked To Facebook Posts (bostonglobe.com)
An anonymous reader quotes the New York Times:
Riots and lynchings around the world have been linked to misinformation and hate speech on Facebook, which pushes whatever content keeps users on the site longest -- a potentially damaging practice in countries with weak institutions and histories of social instability. Time and again, communal hatreds overrun the newsfeed unchecked as local media are displaced by Facebook and governments find themselves with little leverage over the company. Some users, energized by hate speech and misinformation, plot real-world attacks.
A reconstruction of Sri Lanka's descent into violence, based on interviews with officials, victims and ordinary users caught up in online anger, found that Facebook's newsfeed played a central role in nearly every step from rumor to killing. Facebook officials, they say, ignored repeated warnings of the potential for violence, resisting pressure to hire moderators or establish emergency points of contact... Sri Lankans say they see little evidence of change. And in other countries, as Facebook expands, analysts and activists worry they, too, may see violence.
A Facebook spokeswoman countered that "we remove such content as soon as we're made aware of it," and said they're now trying to expand those teams and investing in "technology and local language expertise to help us swiftly remove hate content." But one anti-hate group told the Times that Facebook's reporting tools are too slow and ineffective.
"Though they and government officials had repeatedly asked Facebook to establish direct lines, the company had insisted this tool would be sufficient, they said. But nearly every report got the same response: the content did not violate Facebook's standards."

Good for Facebook. Why doesn't Slashdot remove similar hate speech? Why do the editors allow the comments to be filled with anti-Semitic spam? It's truly embarrassing that Facebook, with orders of magnitude more posts, can police hate speech, but Slashdot refuses to do so. Perhaps it's time to let Slashdot's advertisers know about all the hate speech appearing with their ads. Slashdot's management should be ashamed of all the hate speech that they allow and seem to condone by not deleting it. And make no mistake, Slashdot occasionally deletes posts, yet there's so much hate speech. Truly embarrassing for Slashdot...
I mean, six months ago there weren't these constant drumbeats of anti-facebook stories. Now they're everywhere. Is this tied to the idea that Zuckerberg wants to run for President? The well is being poisoned so he won't pose a threat? After all, he's an outsider with no political experience. Trump was a total outsider, Sanders was a Democrat outsider, and look at all the dirty tricks that were played against them. Personally, I think insiders are the problem as they run our system for the benefit of themselves, not us. Plus, it would be very interesting to have Zuckerberg as America's first Jewish president.
Shutting down free speech with violence isn't fighting fascism. It IS fascism!
Why does spam like the parent not get deleted? I wonder what Slashdot's advertisers would think if they saw all the hate speech appearing with their ads.
yes this is a good thing unless of course you are new york times and involved in a war on the side of the deep state.
Yeah. I hate facebook, I recognize that the vast majority of what they do and their motives are totally evil, and their users are totally dumb. But blaming Facebook for stuff that happens out in the real world? That's just....sooooo fucking stupid.
People say shit, people get riled up, people kill. It's been this way since forever. Maybe it's worse now, or maybe it's just so transparent that more people see it for what it is.
Remember when we all thought that the internet was the great democratizer bringing free speech to the world and was going to rout out corruption whenever it lid?
Two-three years ago I considered it obvious that most web services are neutral carriers of other people's business. That anyone can anonymously sign up for youtube, reddit, facebook, steam, or any internet forum, and use them to carry your message, sell your product, or provide whatever service they provide. Within their rules of course, but otherwise any bad behaviour is not the carrier's business. The concept that a website is responsible for its user's comments was outrages to me.
For the most part I've changed my mind. First thing that made me re-think that was Steam and its deluge of basically-fake games. Some smart people pointed out that a shop is typically responsible for its merchandise and it's not normal for a shop to simply allow any suppliers to put anything they want on their shelves.
And then I asked the question: is it any different for youtube? Why would youtube allow any supplier to put anything they want on their shelf?
Now, facebook is even further, but if I keep going I have to ask: why the company owning slashdot allows me to put this comment on their website without any verification that they want me to be their partner? They don't even know who I am. This is not the usual method of conducting business at all...
So anyway, I am not going into any extreme here. But I did start asking those questions to myself.
NYT and Facebook can fuck off. That is all.
And then you go to this nazi party, and it's a bunch of fatty mixed race nerds that will shit their pants and run when they see a Jew, afraid he will shoot terrible mind control waves or something.
Remember when we all thought that the internet was the great democratizer bringing free speech to the world
Internet is not a walled garden
Facebook is
In Internet one can post counterpoints
On Facebook they actively censor you if your viewpoint does not aligned with theirs
In Internet everyone carries the same weight
On Facebook someone is more equal than others
You can blame facebook all you like; Or the bigger 'social media' giant if you want.
But it's less to do with the platforms and more the access and dissemination of (mis)information.
We live in an age where the technology facilitates communication at great speeds. Something pre-technologically advanced societies didn't have. This means people can rally and co-ordinate some form of action much faster.
What makes it worse is that most anybody can have a device that enables communication (Two way, so it's no longer one-way from publisher-to-reader); and that these devices have become so simplistic, anybody can use it (more or less).
Where just 10 ~ 15 years ago, this wasn't the case, and the number of people 'constantly connected' was vastly smaller.
He's a troll. He's to be ignored.
You're a fascist. You're to be fought.
Islamic nations overwhelmingly more likely to carry out lynchings: "you can't blame that on Islam, most Muslims are peaceful!"
A handful of Facebook posts are linked to some lynchings: "uhrmaghurd, Facebook is teh worst, someone needs to do something!"
When do we get to the "most Facebook users are peaceful" excuse?
I would like to apologize for begin the raging asshole all the time. I am now undergoing a treatment program in an attempt to resolve my many physiological issues. In going through this self discovery process I have discovered that a lot of my problems, especially with my inadequacy, centers around the fact that I was repressing my homosexuality. I now understand that homosexuality isn't bad but that the repression of it is. Most notably this repression caused me to act out at anyone who rightfully pointed out my expansive failings. I realize now that so much of what I said was just wrong. I also realize that I have developed serious problems such as stalking, harassment, poor physical health, and feelings of inadequacy. To this end I would like to apologize to the entire slashdot community.
APK
P.S. => As part of my treatment I have been forced to read what I wrote and realize now that all the mockery and insults I received were fully justified... apk
He's a troll. He's to be ignored.

Oh really ?
I've hunted game for over 40 years.
You would not stand a chance, son.
It was reported last year and recently that national Buddhists use Facebook as a channel to post things that help to incite violence towards minority Muslims called the Rohingya in Burma. A monk called Wirathu was banned, by the government, from public preaching, and that included Facebook.

Lets face it, this speech gets around because it is popular. Facebook's mechanisms amplify it further, but not by much. Even if FB posted counterpoints to every 'hate' post - and the line can be very blurry - these counterpoints would do nothing but make the believers believe the content _more_ (there's actual research on this).
It has taken you 40 years to find game ? I'd not advertise that fact. I generally find game within 24 hours. Set your browsing level to something at level 0 or better and you'll not be subject to so much of the jetsam, and lagan.
BTW Game doesn't shoot back...
Not meant violently of course. Trolls here end up at -1 which hides them by default, probably quicker than most other mechanisms would delete their posts. But censorship must be fought always.
Please mod as Informative this and all such posts from the new & improved (((APK))).
In Sri Lanka there were anti-muslim riots. Why? The mainstream media can't suppress the truth about muslims anymore and when people see how they reaally act they sometimes become so angry riots arise. Good, that should happen in the west too. It's about time we fought back against the muslim threat and the Soros agenda of killing all cultures with more muslim immigrants.
Someone won't get violent because of Facebook... The real issue is that governments and media LIE to us to avoid unrest and that facebook often shows the (uncensored) truth.
In Europe, we got many muslims coming "from Syria" (well, most are in fact NOT from Syria). This is not well accepted by a big part of the population... And this bring lots of problems... but...
- media only show those who are supportive of these "refugees". Although many (most ?) people don't want them here, the only people shown by media are those who help refugee, who hide them from the police, who "protect" them,... ... End 2016, there were massive sexual assaults in many cities of Europe around Xmas... The only place that showed up in the news was Köln... But (thanks to Facebook and other social media) we could learn that it also happenned in many other big cities, in Germany but also in Austria and other... ... many of these were mostly eradicated from our countries (leading to the anti-vaccination movement)... Most media don't talk about it (you need to get into specialized (medical) media to find some information)
- These refugee (and some muslims who were present before ?) commit many sexual assaults on women... Most of the time, it's hidden... Police don't even make some investigation (it's "useless"), media don't talk about it,
- Many health problems are coming with these "refugees"... Scabies, Polio, measles, tuberculosis,
- increased criminality thanks to the refugees... but media coverage is only limited to a few acute problems (like what happened in Calais)...
Facebook, Google+, youtube and other let people talk... There have been videos posted on youtube of riots made by these "refugees" in a big city... while there was no news coverage... The above mentioned problems have been made visible to many people, ...
It's not the social media that did create these fact... they just suppresed the censorship imposed to "normal" medias... they allowed people to see what really happened... But those taking action are usually people from the places where the problems arised... who didn't need the social media to know about these problems...
The root of the problem is that politician DON'T WANT TO FACE THE PROBLEM... they want to leave it for whoever will succeed them... so they try to hide the problems, to prevent people from talking about it... What generate the violence is both these initial problems and the behaviour of politicians... If it was not uncovered by Facebook, it'd be uncovered by other way... maybe a little later... but it'd eventually happen... And things could get worse as the unrest would have lasted longer.
I guess FB annoyed the wrong person - now, there are daily attacks on FB when for years they've been using the same dubious 'business' practices without issue.
Requiem for the American Dream
and when everything gets censored , nothing stands in the way of "governments" to fully abuse any and all of their citizens.
You wont be able to complain about anything cause you are hatespeeching according to the failed pharao's.
Yes ! If we allow freedom of speech the people will all lynch each other! Therefore we have another wonderful reason to stifle free speech. It is rather like the gun controversy. Obviously if we allow people access to guns some people with shoot each other. And yes, when we allow razor blades some women kill themselves in the bath tub by cutting their wrists. Thus the nanny state is our new imperative. Obviously for every freedom there is some really negative result that attaches. Surely we must erase freedom completely.
World War I - Germany engages in a multi-front war against British Empire, France, Russian Empire (pre-USSR), and USA. Predicatbly, they lose. Rather than accepting the fact that Germany lost because they were outnumbered, Hitlere convinced Germans that they were "stabbed in the back by the Jews", when victory was within reach. The repercussions of that delusion were ugly.
Election USA 2016 - Democrats put up unpopular candidate, who won primaries only because of an initial surge of support from "super-delgates" that gave her momentum going into the primaries. She's married to a former president who pushed through NAFTA (Bush negotiated it, but couldn't push it through), and was fully supporting TPP, until Sanders and Trump came out against it. She was the one who called blacks "super predators", stood up in a coal-mining state and said that she was going to shut down more coal mines, never bothered to show up and campaign in some of her crucial "Blue Wall States", illegally ran a private email server, deleted several thousand emails with "bit-bleach" when subpeona'd, lied about "coming under fire" at Benghazi, etc, etc, etc. Rather than admitting that they shot themselves in the foot by running the most awful candidate they could, the only one who could conceivably lose to Donald Trump... they claim that they were "stabbed in the back by Facebook".
What will the ugly repercussions of this delusion be?
I'm not repeating myself
I'm an X window user; I'm an ex-Windows user
On the internet you can't necessarily counter something on the same page either. Countering on some other facebook feed is no different from countering on some other web page. NYT stood by applauding when Facebook&Co caused violence en masse during the Arab spring ... that shit is why I loathe liberals more than any other political group, their opinions go this way or that with emotion and peer pressure. No consistency or recognition of hypocrisy,
I disagree with libertarians, anarchists, communists ... but at least they have some consistency in their thinking. Liberals are just an insane bunch of fuckers.
Only banning illegal speech when reported is a perfectly reasonable stand to take by social media companies, let the chips fall where they may. Demanding they start censoring based purely on your emotions when the outcome is stupid non-productive violence either way is insane.
So, racism, classism, and fat-shaming are suddenly OK? How would your employer's HR department act if they saw you posting this?
He probably will label me an alt-righter and be done with it.
Or worse, call his fatty, white as fuck nerds that shit their pants and run when they see anything that look like an "agent of the patriarchy", afraid he will shoot terrible straightening control waves or something.
I've never met a person who is genuinely guided by his religious or philosophical principles. The main function of those things is to give you rationalizations for the things you do. The more convinced that someone is that he's a good whatever he calls himself, the more self-deluded he is.
The idea of Muslims who are robotically diabolical or Christians that are robotically saintly is ludicrous. It's like thinking being a Selena Gomez fan makes you profoundly different from an Ariana Grande fan.

Facebook is the new "the devil made me do it" excuse for bad behavior.
Facebook, as much as I despise them, does not cause this. The people that do these things are broken and do not qualify as modern human beings, Facebook is just a communications channel here. These people would lynch others even with no electronic communications at all, as they are basically glorified cavemen.
Most ACs are not even worth the keystrokes to insult them. Be generically insulted by this and ignored otherwise.
Muslims and until hezbollah and Hamas are banned from twitter stop posting these bullshit stories about muslims being attacked. https://twitter.com/thepartyof... https://twitter.com/HamasInfoE...
Did someone hurt your widdle feelings? Or were you dropped on your head as a child? If not you should get checked out for a brain tumor.
Paranoid fuckwit.
Donald Trump, on a crusade to make Nixon look respectable
It's business is based on creating an environment creates and empowers divisiveness. Of course, things can be done, but every solution would reduce profits so each true solution is effectively impossible.
I've reported blatantly obvious accounts whose only purpose is to link to for-pay porn videos, and FB responds that they don't violate their standards. Meanwhile, people I know are being blocked for posting "nudity" when all they've posted are fully-clothed gay couples kissing or hugging. FB's moderators are fucking incompetent.
I hear that some lynchings are linked to phone calls and snail-mail too. Ban those systems!
It's not a ridiculous assertion. The building blocks for carbon-based life are just much, much more common than those for life based on "exotic" chemistries, because they are more likely to be generated in fusion reaction in stars laptop tamiri
The information at any cost
If I understand you correctly;
The mainstream media show only positive aspects of immigration, but you're privy to special, secret knowledge that really they are disease ridden sexual predators who aren't even from the country they claim.
Hmm. Are you familiar with the concept of confirmation bias?
Are you aware that places like Facebook are designed, specifically, to show you things you are likely to 'like'? That support your existing world views? That act as a kind of force magnifier for things like confirmation bias? That it's an echo chamber by design?
You are demonstrating, wonderfully, the problem with Facebook becoming such a significant deliverer of what most people think is 'news'.
What the....? Did APK just go full nazi or did some nazi go full APK?
Who deploys suicide bombers, often within crowded marketplaces or mosques.
Christians, among other people, although in this country when they want to commit suicide they're more apt to use guns and the police as their instruments. I suspect that's because guns are easy to get here. If you have to build your own instrument of mass murder, improvised explosives are the way to go.

Lock up this little weasel. Everyone believes he was (is) working with the US govâ(TM)t to change tge way the govâ(TM)t spies on itâ(TM)s citizens!
AC: if you seriously do not believe people can be influenced, what would you believe is the justification for advertising budgets? Clearly it has *some* influence, otherwise it wouldn't happen. Extrapolate from there.
Captcha: "Birthed". Irony desu.
Insightful post. Would mod up if I had points. Well said, sir.
That's right. The internet, once a safe haven from harsh every day realities of terrorism, militarism, injustice, politics stupidity and hate has now, thanks to Facebook, gotten all the toxic trash in , along with the brainwashed zombie mobs, especially the non-western mobs, with their lynching and intolerance tendencies, right through the front door, to the sanctuary, polluting every webpage with facebook trackers and communication, with those terrible "real" people getting a virtual standing.
