Nintendo Plans New Version of Switch Next Year (wsj.com)

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is planning to release a new version of its Switch gaming console next year (Warning: source may be paywalled; alternative source) "to maintain the sales momentum of the device," which is "no longer delivering the favorable surprises that marked the machine's first year on the market." From the report: Nintendo is still debating what new hardware and software features to include in the upgrade and weighing the cost of the features, people with knowledge of the discussions said. One option is improving the display, they said. The current Switch uses a lower-end liquid-crystal display without some technologies that are standard in more recent smartphone LCDs. Updating the display with these technologies would make it brighter, thinner and more energy-efficient. The updated Switch isn't expected to adopt the organic light-emitting diode or OLED panels used in Apple's iPhone X series. Nintendo is looking to release the new Switch in the latter half of 2019, perhaps as soon as summer, the people said. [...] The upgraded Switch would likely share many features with the current version and be compatible with existing Switch game software.

I'm betting this'll use 7nm chips, and Nintendo is mulling whether they should just improve the battery life, or improve the performance. Right now, when in portable mode, the SoC is underclocked in order to improve battery life, but it renders at 720p (for the 720p screen) and framerate is noticeably worse in many games (Doom and Xenoblade at least). It'd be tempting to have it run at the docked clock speed while in portable mode, slap a 1080p screen on there, and give owners the same experience in docked and portable mode.
It's also worth noting that a new Switch revision is expected to fix the hardware bugs responsible for it being hacked, so there is that.

I'm still wondering where the 3rd party games are, considering how well the systems have sold. Hope it didn't Vita itself with high development costs.

The only direct upgrade available right this instant is the TX2 (which is what Nintendo should have used in the first place, instead of the aging TX1) which if memory serves, is a 16nm chip. The Switch's Tegra X1 SoC is actually underclocked in both modes due to the console's lack of cooling; The GPU performance in docked mode is only 70% of the chip's spec, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn the CPU is similarly limited, considering the cases of Switches warping due to overheating even at the current settings.

Global Foundaries just got out of the 7nm business, presumably because there weren't enough partners contracting to pay for it. Considering the fact that Nvidia is still reusing chips from 2015 for the Switch and hasn't publicly announced any 7nm builds other than desktop GPUs, I don't think Nvidia will surprise us with a 7nm SoC any time soon. As long as Nintendo is still hitching their wagons to Nvidia, that means a 7nm console is equally unlikely.

On the other hand, Nintendo could switch to chips from another manufacturer (most likely Qualcomm), provided the new chips would be compatible with the graphics APIs and other festures the Nvidia Tegra X1 and Nintendo's current software involve. Nvidia's SHIELD/Switch secret sauce is the support for APIs like desktop OpenGL and DirectX. Several of Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips apparently use an Adreno GPU that supports the same; Considering the recent partnership between Qualcomm and Microsoft attempting to bring Windows desktop applications to ARM, this should come as no surprise. A Qualcomm-built Switch 2 would be compatible with Switch 1 software and have a much better chance of being 7nm-based.

Assuming for a moment that Nintendo does stick with Nvidia, Nvidia has some R&D into VR equipment that hasn't seen the light of day; Perhaps a made-for-VR console might be produced under the Switch brand? That would continue under the theme of Nintendo reusing existing Nvidia tech to keep costs down. We all know the glowing terms emulators like Dolphin VR have been described with, at least by enthusiasts; Perhaps Nintenndo will produce a VR version of some existing games in order to capture that player base with an official product. Nintendo has also made statements about producing other media like movies, and this would fit right in with VR, as many VR experiences are passive.

So, nvidia can take Xavier to a hack saw and remove most of it, or port the old SoC to 12nm, or make some mix. (e.g. the old quad Cortex A57 CPU and Volta graphics? a newer CPU block and the old graphics?)

      That's not the only reason.

tl;dr: Nintendo's sales suck because they screw over their customers when they feel like it and their own incompetence.

Nintendo has a history of being incompetent in the places that matter. Case in point: Online.

The latest online they are trying to push is a subscription model. That for-profit model includes such features as: playing ancient games everyone and their brother has a way to play via emulation (Hell do a google search, you'll find a site to play them on without "downloading" them), a controller sold-separately that only works with said ancient games, paying for features you used to get for free, missing modern features like friend requests / in game chat / working server based anti-cheat, and a cloud based save backup system that seems to exclude every game whose save data you'd actually want to back up.

Nintendo also has a history of snubbing it's established players. "Oh, Other M wasn't received well? The series is on hiatus for years, but here's a bad multiplayer entry that has absolutely nothing to do with the main character other than passive mention." "Pokemon isn't hard enough? Pokemon is for infants who can't figure out the game's systems, so let's make it even easier." "The Wii U sales sucked? Let's chuck the system and release a new one." "Someone hacked their system? Quick! Ban them from CDN and the eShop! That will prevent them from going legit!" "Someone uploaded footage of the Subspace Emissary to Youtube? No more adventure modes for smash. Also, make a "creator's" program that ensures we have final say on anything uploaded to Youtube." "Someone made a fangame and gave it away for free? Quick, send a C&D letter and file a DMCA claim. That will teach them the proper place of a so called fan!"

Finally, while they strive to make a cheap system for kids, Nintendo also completely misses the point of creating a console to begin with: Being a unique system with fun games, that can handle what's thrown at it. In some cases, the Switch was the correct move to play:

      1. Being a console and a tablet means it encourages quality games to be developed that can be played in a portable environment.

      2. It removes the need for separate hardware and software development lines focused on completely different use environments.

Where the Switch falls short is:

      1. It's positive aspects are shared by it's competitors which they can benefit from.

      2. Many of the games released so far are ports of existing titles.

      3. Nintendo started releasing games that require the user to pay for external storage to use, even if the user bought the game physically.

Those last two and the online are extremely problematic because Nintendo has largely promised the public the world with the Switch only to now be releasing a new version without any real dent being made in the older hardware's potential, and the fact that they are already begging for more money. Worse still they've been down this road before with the "New" Nintendo 3DS, and DSi. The former's true potential never being realized due to breaking away from developer's expectations of a console platform, and the latter's only real improvements being superficial. Based on that alone, I'd imagine the "New" Nintendo Switch being in a similar bucket. I.e. A complete waste of money from a consumer prospective, and no change from a developer's perspective. From the critic's armchair perspective, I'd say it's more of Nintendo's SOP: incompetence.

However, I will give Nintendo a hint:

      1. Implement the online your players have been asking for since day one.

      2. Quit punishing players for having opinions that are different from your own.

      3. Release new titles.

      - Wii controllers can be joined via Bluetooth.
      - Things like RetroPie do a wonderful non-PC job of having a home "console" for retro games.

Everything else, I literally have never bothered with. Watched someone play the latest Assassin's Creed something-or-other recently on some XBox console and honestly got bored within minutes. I could click buy and own Assassin's Creed now if I wanted to. If someone else is using it, I just sling it into Big Picture Mode and it becomes a console to them and they can go in and out of games to their heart's content.

I haven't "got" games consoles since they first started going online. At that point all the advantages they had dripped away to become inferior PCs. The XBox WAS a PC, quite literally.

All the people who complain about "driver issues" and things seem to be really echoing some circa-1997 things that people complain about. If you can get on Chrome, your computer works.
