Japan's Silent Submarines Extend Range With Lithium-Ion Batteries (nikkei.com)
AmiMoJo shares a report from Nikkei Asian Review: Japan's first submarine powered by lithium-ion batteries was launched on Thursday. The [Soryu-class diesel-electric] submarine can reach speeds of roughly 20 knots and displaces 2,950 tons. It will be delivered to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in March 2020. Batteries are recharged by the energy generated by Oryu's diesel engines. The vessel switches to batteries during operations and actual combat in order to silence the engines and become harder to detect. The lithium-ion batteries radically extend the sub's range and time it can spend underwater.
Plus, when they run out of charge, they double as torpedoes.

The other side of the story is using hydrophones (waterproof microphones) to listen to the deep.
Every major country has these permanent stations anchored out across the oceans.
An audio spectrum analyzer sweeps the apparently random noise with tones from near zero up to the khz.
Obviously, when noise from the sea is the same frequency as the artificial pure tone, they are added together.
Rinse, repeat.

A computer alerts when it sees a straight line, created over time.

Many of the WWII era subs used a hybrid system. The USS Seawolf used early in the war had four diesels: two connected directly to the props, two connected to generators. The sub could only drive at max speed with all four diesels running, two driving the props directly, two supplementing the power by first generating electricity that was then fed directly to the motors on the props.

Japanese Reactionaries Should Not Try to Spoil Peaceful Atmosphere of Korea
The maritime “Self-Defense Force” of Japan recently conducted a test-fire of the interceptor missile SM-3 Block 1B on an Aegis destroyer in waters off Hawaii of the U.S. It is reportedly the first time that the MSDF conducted an interceptor missile test-fire.
Witnessing the will and aspiration of all Koreans to turn the Korean peninsula and its vicinity into a cradle of peace, the world community is now positively welcoming and supporting it, sincerely hoping that it would bear food fruit. However, only the reactionaries on the island country are crazy about military moves against the trend of the times.
We cannot but take a serious view of their open claim that they conducted the first-fire as part of “muscle flexing” against the DPRK.
Whenever there was an epochal event in the Korean peninsula, the ill-natured Japanese reactionaries talked rubbish to play down its significance, being displeased with it.
The constitutional ill habit and mind of the descendants of the samurais seeking their interests in checking the peace trend on the Korean peninsula and creating tensions in the region never change.
The present reactionary regime of Japan seeks to put the Asia-Pacific region under control by turning Japan into a country capable of going to war.
No matter how desperately it moves, it can never dampen the aspirations of all Koreans and the international community for peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and the region.
The politicians of Japan are well advised to face up to the present situation and improve their ability to behave themselves as it will be good for them.

Japan’s Moves to Seize Tok Island
Recently, the Japanese government posted an inquiry report terming Tok Island a “part of the Japanese territory” on the website of the Cabinet Secretariat.
This is just a manifestation of the sinister design of the Japanese ruling quarters hell-bent on the moves to seize the island.
In January last a ceremony for opening an exhibition house for territorial sovereignty was given in the middle of Tokyo Metropolis to advertise Japan’s “dominium over Tok Island”.
Paragraphs containing such claim were stipulated in such documents as a diplomatic blue book and a defense white paper.
Not content with it, the Japanese regime posted such absurd and impudent words on its Cabinet Secretariat’s website.
Tok Island is just a part of the inalienable territory of the Korean nation.
Nevertheless, the Japanese reactionaries are insisting that the island is “a part of their territory”, touting “illegal occupation.”
Their racket to seize others’ territory against historical truth and international principle has reached the height of wild greed and impudence.
They are loudly talking about “dominium over Tok Island”, only to come under criticism by the international community. Lurking behind it is an ill-minded intention to justify their criminal moves for reinvasion, on which various countries are keeping their sharp eyes, by giving impression that there exists an “issue of territorial dispute” between the DPRK and Japan.
The Japanese reactionaries’ distortion of history is just a prelude to their territorial expansion and overseas invasion.
However, “dominium over Tok Island” touted by them is just a wild dream that can never come true.
Japan’s desperate moves to grab the island will only harden the will of Korean nation to surely force the sworn enemy to pay dearly for the past crimes, out of towering hatred towards Japan.

(I get that the point is that these are better batteries. That was just kind of weird.)
if they are using a Lithium-Cobalt chemistry. Hopefully they've chosen a Lithium-Phosphate though. These are tough cells.
The article is too lacking.
Noise isn't necessarily the problem with nuclear reactors, it's the heat. They dump a bunch of heat into the water, which can be picked up by satellites. They have to go *deep* to evade detection this way, which limits where they can go. You won't be able to tell *exactly* where the sub is, but you get the idea that one is in the area, and it's general direction.

If they'd had these batteries during the war, they could have defeated the U.S. even after their fuel supply was stopped.
Why would the Japanese name a warship after one of the carriers that went down at Midway, the battle that pretty much ended their empire?

Those can also dive silently for much longer times than the old compressed air ones and it's useful for us as well.

Diesel electric submarine tech has been around close to a century so that's not new.
Running on electric is quieter and in the submarine warfare scenario, that is crucial.
Batteries don't radically extend range. What is likely is that the batteries have better range than previous types of batteries.
This is all information that is easily available and yet the referenced article reports on it poorly.
So ask yourself, "How accurate is the media when it comes to information that is hard to obtain?"
