As Magnetic North Pole Zooms Toward Siberia, Scientists Update World Magnetic Model (npr.org)
An anonymous reader quotes a report from NPR: Earth's geographic north pole is fixed. But the planet's magnetic north pole -- the north that your compass points toward -- wanders in the direction of Siberia at a rate of more than 34 miles per year. That movement may seem slow, but it has forced scientists to update their model of Earth's magnetic field a year earlier than expected so that navigational services, including map-based phone apps, continue to work accurately. The drift results from processes taking place at the center of the planet. Molten iron and nickel slosh and spin in the planet's core, essentially serving as a metallic conductor for Earth's magnetic field. Changes in that fluid flow lead to changes in the magnetic field. As a result of those changes, the accuracy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's World Magnetic Model (WMM) -- a mathematical representation of the magnetic field -- slowly deteriorates in the five-year periods between updates. The next update was due in 2020. But "unplanned variations" have degraded the quality of the WMM so greatly that NOAA published an out-of-cycle update Monday. It was delayed from January by the partial government shutdown.

So you have 3 things: Velocity, Electric field, Magnetic field, and orientation of these somehow relates to each other/ are coordinated.
Lets consider it, as say, holes and electrons, where an electron has no specific orientation, rather it's the velocity over the holes that causes the magnetic field. So electrons move up, 'holes' (unfilled slots for electrons) move down, that gives us 1 axis. We still have two other axis to fix there. A simply line of flow isn't enough.
A property of electrons that makes one side more "northish" relative to the other side's "southish", also doesn't work. You could simply turn it around, it should reverse the field but doesn't. So it must be coordinated somehow between the three properties, velocity, magnetic and electric fields.
Q1. So how is the orientation fixed? It cannot be arbitrary because the same effect must work across electrons everywhere, but by what mechanism?
Q2. The electro-magnetic wave thing seems obvious.... we get waves from across the universe, the stars they came from has long gone, how, why, what exactly is oscillation there? Why is the rule coordinating that oscillation for a long gone star across the universe the same as the local rule now? How does the orientation in Q1 still apply to both then and now?

There cannot be a 4th dimension, consider 2 dimensional space, in 2D world to pass someone you go above them or below them. If someone passed you by disappearing then reappearing later behind you, you'd notice the violation of the rules of 2D space and realize the 3rd dimension. Likewise in our universe, you'd see the same thing, galaxies would partially disappear, only to reappear elsewhere. The axis of spin could not be described in 3D space, and we'd deduce the 4th dimension.
Without a 4th dimension, that coordination must be within the current 3 dimensions. Is this agreed? Or are you asserting higher dimensions in your model?

And to *every* electron, across the entire universe, and also to photons/waves, because their rules also coordinate. How many degrees off of true north is it when the poles reverse or at what rate of change? Has that even been determined using the Atlantic rock layers? If not, it could be good to know.

You know it is straightforward logic there.
1) If light comes from matter, and has an electric magnetic field,
2) so its an oscillation of charged particles, it cannot be some wave because it does not spread and does not have a medium to travel over,
3) and the only charged particles you know about in matter have the charges corresponding to the charge in an electron and a proton, +1 and -1
4) then lights particles must be those.
5) In electrons, and protons that force is strong, and yet in light its electric and magnetic are piss ass weak.
6) Suggesting that increased velocity weakens those forces.
7) And you observe this when you accelerate particles, the faster they go, the harder it gets to accelerate them.... i.e. the force you're pushing against gets weaker. Likewise bending it, bend accelerated electrons in a magnetic field, and it follows a path as if its magnetic force is weak... again evidence of the above.
You literally observe the simple consequence of that very simple thought experiment.

The outer-core is extremely likely to be molten rocks, filled with elements all over the periodic table not dense enough to fall to the core as easily due to magma flows, pressures and other gradients that keep them flowing easily.
We've made simulations that predict these results accurately, and predicted behaviour consistent with what has been measured. (as opposed to the biased "we made our simulations fit reality", which is sadly still common all over science, especially the soft sciences!)

Okay, so this is clearly abnormal. In the 200 years of time that we've been watching the location of the poles. this is completely novel behavior that we can't explain. Surely the magnetic poles have never ever done this before in the 4,600,000,000 years the Earth has been around. Our 200 years of data is solid and tells us absolutely everything we need to know about how to predict the poles.
Because the poles are moving in ways those 200 years of data don't explain, clearly it must be driven by something new. Manmade climate change is relatively new, and because cum hoc ergo propter hoc is completely legitimate, I conclude that climate change caused by man is the reason the poles are moving in these new and dangerous ways.
I propose a magnetic pole tax to pay for research into how to stop the magnetic poles from moving as a result of human activity. The Earth as we know it will be destroyed if we don't do this, people. The science is settled and there is no reason to argue against it. We need a tax now, and I will graciously and humbly volunteer to be the steward of that money, and I promise I will never ever use it to my own purposes, or to buy myself several private jets, or to go on lavish speaking tours across tropical paradise. Here's a question: as the earth's magnetic field is based significantly on the location of the magnetic pole, the strength of any electromagnetic field varies significantly depending on the incidence angle of incoming particles (ie to exclude solar wind) has anyone studied what impact this shift would have on earth's climate?
Looking at http://wdc.kugi.kyoto-u.ac.jp/... the pole has shifted 5x the distance recently as at the start of the last century. Does the northward shift of the magnetic field by 16-17 degrees with increasing speed track at all with increasing surface temps?

But both are collectivist ideologies considering the state as supreme (with a few exceptions - Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin - who never got large, politically influencial followings) and both reject individuals entering into compacts on their own; and both consider inequality of outcome to be a problem (if not a crime) that the state must prevent.
Again, the difference between the two matter only to those involved in the details. Just like there is a major difference between Anarcho-Capitalists and Classical Liberals. It is mostly subsidized via oil and weapons, but that's not the only answer; Finland mostly sells consumer electronics as it's primary source of exports and the service sector is 66% of it's labor force, so they disprove that theory. No the reason the Nordic model doesn't work for the US is that all 6 Nordic countries (including Denmark, Iceland, and Greenland) are frozen-over unpleasant places, making them much less attractive for immigration, and when there are immigrants they are primarily from very adjacent cultures. Their birth rates are relatively even with the death rates, and the geography ensures that more or less every place is similar to the others in terms of economic development and opportunity. The US on the other hand has myriad sub-cultures based on geography (The South, New York, New England, West Coast, Mid-West, etc) with vastly different economic situations and opportunities, along with extensive immigration giving it a growing population, and who bring multiple other cultures (Americans, African Americans, European whites, latinos, latin-americans (they are different), Asian of various types), all of which add to the complexity of economic development and opportunity. Thus a government run system is doomed to fail because no one system can meet the needs of so many sub-cultures, economic situations, health situations etc.
I'm not saying the system in the US is great, but a government-run universal healthcare isn't much better.
