Linux 2.2.0pre9
Caballero writes "
Not only is 2.2 pre 9 available. The version number in the Makefile is listed as 2.2.0-final!
It also includes support for the new SGI visual workstation."
We're almost there now kids. Chill the wine (or just get out
the shot glasses)
Anyone try Linux on the SGI Visual PCs yet?
Hmmm. Anyone willing to tell something about this PnP feature in this kernel?
okay I have never done this before.. :P :) ... you guessed it.. linux stuff! :P okay well I took a while to write this so maby I wont be first :)
but Im first
hehe j/k
I think that 2.2 is a big step for linux. We are getting so close to being SO big in the big league.... (or are we allready there?) I think its just awsome.. And to add to that.. This company wants to higher me for
Those of us at the Linux conference in London yesterday got that news first hand from Alan Cox himself...Well done to Alan for getting home in time to merge the changes.
who cannot ever remember his account ID.
The kernel wizards may be a few days late with the final (actually, I don't think Linus or Alan ever specifically committed to a release date. They just sort of hinted at "before the end of the year"), but they did come out exactly on budget. Because of that they will be able to continue offering the same great product to their customers at the same great price.
If anyone noticed the predominant amounts of OOPS's over bugs in the last 6 or 7 kernels, they should be quite content with the pre- versions. Or at least the ac patches should fix your kernel if you are using the part of the kernel with the annoying OOPS. I really don't care if I am using a final version or a pre, because my linux box has never been as fast as it is right now, my modules have never loaded with the ease they do now, and my system has never had fewer configuration tweaks. They really did a number on [menu|x]config b/c now the options are very much sensical (except for some experimental ones) and some of them are not really obscure like in 2.0.*. Of course, I've had less experience then, but it seems to me that a lot of things start making sense now, while in 2.0 they seemed to work due to some black magic and duct tape. 8)
just my impression of the 2.2 kernel. simply quite awe!

I just went from 2.0.35 to 2.2.0pre8-ac1 last night.. and now pre9/final? *grumble* Reboots suck, even for a new kernel.
You know... I bet Microsoft is *really* regretting drawing out the trial for so long now.
Well, pre8 broke my network (de4x5) - module refused to insmod with a "resource busy" message.
pre7 was fine.
pre9 is comming down now, if that is busted I guess I should jump on the kernel mailing list.

Anyone know the state of the PIII support?
your obviously stupid.
you really showed him, didn't you?
:)
PIII Support is automagic. Same core as PII..only thing that isn't taken advantage of is the new KNI instructions. That is no big news. Game programmers for windows prolly won't support KNI.
What glue chipset is that?
And BTW, what about the VIA VP£ and MVP3?
Umm... sometimes I just wonder about Linus. Changing something so fundamental as APIC handling so close to the release date just to shoe-horn SGI VW support into the kernel just boggles the mind!
QIC-02 tape support appears under "Mice" in xconfig!
And watchdog timer, too!
I'm using RH 5.2 and would like to try out the new 2.2 kernel. Could anyone tell me what packages I need to update first? I've looked at the list on www.linuxhq.com, but I'm not sure which version I currently have of any of those. Any help would be appreciated.
Next up: 2.2.0-final2
End of which year? I believe Chinese new year is in Feb, so it's still before the end of the year fow 1/4 of the worlds population.:)

It SHOULD enable you to use PnP cards in Linux without mucking around with isapnpconf. This includes intializing SB PnP cards (I'm using an AWE32 PnP right now with it) and PnP modems, etc. I'm sure there's documentation somewhere...why not email the author?

im in no hurry, i still hope they take thier time.
what great about free software is that there
is usually no dead line (i get a deadline in
a couple of weeks, but usually there isnt one)
meaning when somethings released, its released
good. even if your not willing to wait, theres
the pre releases...
so whats this about visual PC support?
still need an X server...
The modular sound driver loaded properly, but always played buffers out of order. ALSA broke completely and now this is the way it's going to be. Luckily there's the commercial driver.
Good job Linus, Alan et al! Keep up the good work! And start buildin' them cool fiddlybits for 2.3.x ;)

I'm a few days behind. I decided to catch up and patch up my 2.2.0-pre6 to 7, and then 8. I recompiled/installed over lunch. I haven't even rebooted the machine yet and pre9 comes out (it's wasn't out when I started, 'cos I checked).
Ah well, my linux machine likes compiling. It must, 'cos it does it so well.
Keep going lads. 2.2.0 here we come.
I am running Slackware 3.6 and I was just wondering if there is anything I need to upgrade in order get the 2.2.x kernel running on my system? I haven't tried it yet, but I'd like to get ready for the final release!
There's no need to alter the kernel to run linux on the P3.
The KNI registers save/restore on context switch is only required when the P3 is in KNI mode, and AFAIK, the 2.2 x86 kernel is _not_ written for KNI mode.
That means that NO linux software will be able to use KNI until the kernel supports it.
My network is still broken in pre9 (as it was in pre7ac5 and up). I looked on the linux-kernel archive and there was nothing on this (just for the other dec driver). Anyone else have this problem?
The PIII is already supported. It may be a while before kernel support and compilers exist to produce applications that use KNI.
PIII is just a PII with some cache changes etc. If you mean the new "Katmai" instructions, that's a user space issue, not a kernel issue.
Ohmygaaaaawwwwwwwwwd!
I _need_. Hehe. SGI has made a computer for the rest of us. Even I, the ultimate cheapskate, would consider one at ~$4k...too good to pass up...
I feel much better about Linux 2.2.0 now, my uptime is only 10 days since I got back to campus...I just couldn't deal with takin 'er down at the end of last semester.
I'm considering ways to drive from Pittsburgh to DC _up_.
a) prepare car w/cigarette lighter adapter
b) be sure ups is fully charged
c) bring elevator to 7th floor
d) make mad dash to car, plug in (may require add'l help).
e) drive home happy with computer up. Don't stop engine.
Rule!
Damn, I just downloaded Pre8 last night and compiled it... haven't even run it yet ...
I guess I am just a day late and a dollar short as allways!!!!!!!
Of all the things I miss
Not as stupid as you for posting a post like that one.
What company?
Spell checker couldn't be that hard. Just run the submition through ispell (or whatever) and output the corrections on the preview page...just a thought.
Yo, haaz! If yr out there, subj. line sez all. Peace..

".sig,
A late program/kernel is better than a buggy kernel if you have a full featured public beta to play with in the meantime.

The Visual Workstations, AFAIK, HAVE been released. I attended a roll-out yesterday, and I know there was one last week.
After speaking with an SGI engineer, I was told that they will be working with the Linux community on developing support for the Visual Workstations.
Now if only Alias would port their apps to Linux (possibly after a year or two, according to an independent sales rep.)
One thing though, I wouldn't really call it a PC. After seeing the presentation, I'd have to agree with SGI that it's not a PC clone. The motherboard is completely different than standard PCs, and it is basically a next-generation O2, with Intel processor(s). It's got the unified memory model that the O2s have, which makes your system memory act as memory for all the peripherals... This happens over a 3.2GB/sec bus, so there's no performance hit - I saw a 50 MB (4k x 4k x 32bit) image spun, scaled, and effects applied real-time. It's a pretty sweet little box.

i don't get it... :)
:) :) ;)
if you've done the legwork to get to 2.2.0pre8, then you've done 99.95% of the tricky, time-consuming part...
just rebuild and reboot
it's not that bad
i'd MUCH rather be in this position than to wait 19 months for the next service pack

Try editing scripts/tkparse.h and taking out the BUG_COMPATIBLE flag. That ought to fix it. Whether it works or not, send me a test report at mec@shout.net. Slashdot the new code for me, please. :)
I expect all vestiges of BUG_COMPATIBLE will be gone by 2.2.1 or 2.2.2. Ain't no way Linus would hold up 2.2.0 for more xconfig bug fixes. I'm happy I got the steam-cleaned tkparse in under the wire.
Very very good.
This can cause a major "linux-fest" in the media.
But It's always a good idea to give it some time.
Haste makes waste. (later is better?)
