I was a really big Metallica fan. I've bought close to 50 CDs, a 10 video tapes, the DVD and even some vinyl (not to mention t-shirts and posters). I'd go out and drop $12 on an import single just to hear a couple b-sides. I was even a member of their fan club for the past couple years. The renewal form came last week, and its not getting paid.
Metallica used to be one of the most fan-friendly major acts out there. They would even have a tapers section where fans could record their shows. To quote a certain Danish drummer, "It happens anyway, so why not put them in the middle, where at least it will sound better" and "it's the ultimate souvenir to take the show home after you've lived through it." You know what I use Napster for most of the time? Getting bootlegs. I already own all of their releases...I just want to hear some live material without paying $25 for a cd of unknown quality.
For the past few years I've always argued with people who said they've sold out. Sure, their style changed after Justice, but I liked a fair deal of that too (I even like Load better than TBA or Reload). Even though they are all multi-millionares who each had their own private jet, they still seemed to respect their fans. I don't see that anymore.
And now some more ironic quotes from Lars:
(re: bootlegs) "It's not really a big deal. Who am I to sit on my high horse and say, 'I'm a rock star and you can't do this because it takes away from our record sales'? We don't have a problem with record sales."
"From the time we started, back in the garage in 1981, it's always been about having fun. I still look at us as four drinking buddies united around the music. It's cool if we've opened some doors that weren't opened before and it's cool if we've made people realize that there is a market for bands like this. But that's not what it's about -- it's just about us having fun playing our music."
Well, for some reason I have a bunch of old Boot mag cds sitting on my desk in the strata circa 1997 (November to be exact). The distro included was Debian 1.3.1.
That's all well and good IF you happen to have good local radio stations. I used to listen to a lot of radio until my favorite station (KNAC), the only one in the hard rock/metal genre went off the air 4 years ago. Since then nobody has filled the void. L.A. has something like a half dozen rap stations, 3-4 really bad modern rock stations, and countless Spanish language stations. Yes, there are tons of net stations now (including a watered-down KNAC @knaclive.com) but they are mostly poor quality RA streams or require Windows media player or something and I can't listen to them anywhere. What's the point of this post? None really...just bitching about how much L.A. radio sucks.:P
Just off the top of my head, the SB Awe 64 Gold has RCA outputs. I use a Ensoniq AudioPCI (1371) patched into my stereo (harman/kardon + Infinity = really fsckin' loud) via a 3.5mm stereo to dual RCA cable (about a 15' run). Once I got xmixer dialed in it was plenty loud. Its certainly not audiophile quality, but it sounds a lot better than radio or tape.

Hey look, Johnny Mathis...get my gun!
"her head, full of answers"...split it open now
...and numerous others I can't remember since I haven't seen most of em in 8 years. I haven't felt so pissed since my favorite radio station (KNAC) went off the air. RIP MST3K.
I don't think that getting rid of *all* roms is feasable or desirable. I love being able to d/l roms of old games that I used to play as a kid. I only have one game console, a Turbo Duo (and TG16 and TurboExpress). Its definately my fav game system, but I don't have many games for it and its a PITA to find most of them anymore. I own the console, I own some games, but I just can't get ahold of some I want to play. TTI is now defunct, so I'm not gonna put em out of business by "pirating". I think a better solution would be to put a moratorium on relasing an emu until at least 1 new generation of console is out. N64 is hot right now so all the kiddies want one, preferably without paying for it. I don't see many of em clamoring for a rom of Bonk III however...
My network is still broken in pre9 (as it was in pre7ac5 and up). I looked on the linux-kernel archive and there was nothing on this (just for the other dec driver). Anyone else have this problem?

So? My vcr has a 30 sec ff button too. Granted, with this it will probably be instantaneous, but its still nothing new...
