Ebay Auctions its Own Stolen CSoTY Award
Smack writes "Ebay
didn't pick up their Cool Site of the Year
award (just like Slashdot). So someone else picked it up
for them, and now they're auctioning it
off on Ebay itself! The price is already up to $130.00. What beautiful irony..."
God bless the Internet. Now I'm beginning to wonder where my
CSoTY trophy ended up... Update: 02/03 03:34 by CT : Wired picked
up the story a little
bit ago. They don't know where our trophy is either *grin*
Wow that is weird. They really will sell anything there.
Well, all the stuff on ebay is stolen or fake or broken anyway, so... Internet is a great opportunity for someone selling stolen goods :)
Anybody know the eBay item number!?
like you would talk about ebay if it was not for that promo gizmo :))
www.mesopust.com - nobody talks about it
It is over 200 now, must be the /. effect....
Well their is a chain of stores here in Canada called The Bay, decended from the Hudsons Bay company. It is only natural to assume that eBay coppied their name and then added an "e" for electronic. Now it is the responsibility of The Hudsons Bay company to sue them into tomorrow.
(forgive my spelling/grammar I'm a result of the Canadian school system)
This is quite possibly the funniest thing I have read in several weeks. If I had a glass of milk handy, I'd have to spew it out my nose.
What's more, the seller's attitude about the whole thing is hilarious... about making Beanies seem like a "pile of oily rags not worthy of the rankest hobo" -- how appropriate for eBay, the Beanie Baby haven. This guy deserves an award just for pulling this off. We aught to all pitch in to bail him out of prison, or at least send him some cigarettes.
Fo stickin it to da man, ma brotha.
Sounds like sour grapes.
I think my subject says it all....
I think the most amusing part of this whole thing
is the auction being listed on eBay as a "Hot Item"
510$??????? People have way to much dough to burn. Buy me a dolby 5.1 receiver sometime.
Well, they're from the SF Bay Area (the South Bay, to be precise), so I assume the "e" is for electronic and the "Bay" is for, well, you get the idea...
If you check out this link on eBay, I'm auctioning off a coupon for a free Big Mac at McDonald's -- and people are bidding!
Hey /.'s,
See what poor losers the SMUG crowd is over slashdot winning best zine award
What you missed
I wonder how much the morons will bid for a dead battery? Hmmmm... I suspect an experiment is in order.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
This has got to be one of the funniest things I've seen! Makes me wonder if I can find something that people WON'T bid on. A jar of Gramma's finest Toejam perhaps?
I trust that everybody knows at this point that http://www.smug.com/contents.html is the one selling the award
it was spotted in Gnu York.
fear the slashdot effect dammit!
$200, if it fits in a PowerComputing Powercenter Low Profile case. The tandard size for Mac cards is 4.150" measured from the edge connector to the top of the board, the PCC card is about an inch shorter.
Just checked it out.. the high price is currently $3.06. I can get a full-priced big Mac for $1.99. Why would someone pay DOUBLE for a stickin Big Mac?
You're getting $3 (probably $4) out of it at least.
maybe some E-bay exec thinks it's funny and is blowing some E-bay options to buy it... :-)
You can't contribute to charity with STOLEN merchandise. Thats exactly what this is.
Doesn't matter whether ebay happened to miss the awards or not. This guy impersonated ebay, stole their award, and is now trying to sell it.
From what I understand (unless I'm wrong), I read there were 700 people at those awards, so its no little thing.
Notice that all the high bidders have 0 previous trades, and are offering mad amounts of cash? Also remember that in order to pursue someone for renegging on your auction, you have to go through E-Bay. Think of what happens when they bring the claim to E-Bay. People are bidding because they know they wont be chased when they laugh and say they wont pay. Although it's also just possible that the smug crowd is outbidding on their own items. Note that sweet dan has 4 positive remarks from people about "prompt shipping" while this is his first auction heh.
You're insulting an anonymous poster? If you'd like to do something equally as pointless, I can give you an address to send lots of money to....
...your trophy was in Nepal. Cows had set up
a shrine to worship it, and use it to ward off
the Yeti.
It's not really a zine, as the Smug people noted in that article. More of a news site.

gosh, i think you might be right about them fake bids. but i just found out that eBay is actually totally down with this auction -- think of the press and hits they're getting (far more than they would receive for collecting the award in the first place) -- and would totally cooperate.
guess no one's getting arrested. that's good.
To whoever wins this one, put in on your mantle for a week, and then put it back up for bid on ebay, proceedes going to charity! Maybe we can keep this going on and on and on... With lots of money raise for charity. You know the publicity would be great for charity and ebay.
To eBay, advertise this in your comercials. You never know what ill show up on eBay. Like our own cool site of the year award that we forgot to pick up. It could be yours! There is no such thing as bad publicty, and this could be good for them.
PS, I'll forgive eBay if they close this auction and demand their award, but I think they are better off in this case pardoning anyone who holds the trophy for less then six months, and donates all proceededs from the sale to charity.
Right now - 12:00 CST, the award is at $510.00! What is up with that?
AFAIK, it's somehow related to the fact that the original site that morphed into ebay had information on the ebola virus.

Why? Just to give it a shot and see how high I could go.
They mean exactly nothing, except for more hits for the awarding site (i.e. free advertising).
thats freakin great stuff. I would feel bad for ebay, but its basically thier own fault for not picking it up..
$5100 wtf? I really hope this got so high because some people found this a nice way to contribute to charity. if not...

It's time to end this thread before someone strings us up, and I'm knot feedin ya lines here...
I think that sentence above is worthy of accord, but save it for later, I'm kinda tied up.

Actually, the lemming mentality of most internet auction-goers makes it quite profitable to buy merchandise at wholesale or even retail and resell it on eBay.
Check what a Palm III goes for on buy.com vs. eBay and you'll understand.
This is just like television, only you can see much further.
What is the name "eBay" supposed to mean? Just a nonsense word? I couldn't find any info on their site.
Man... last I looked.. it is now at $5100... Someone gotta notify CNN and have them do a story. Hell.. I just do that right now. Man.. that is one of the most funniest story I ever came across about this. :)

WIRED had this article about the subject this morning.
Funny, and really really impressive of anyone to pull of a stunt like that on impulse!
Why bother w/eBay? /.

Can the winner pay with McDonalds gift certificates?
Interesting conflict of morality for Ebay. On the one hand, they claim they've got everything, and are impartial in regards to the sellers. On the other, what do you do when you know without a doubt that someone is a)selling (your) stolen merchandise or b)misrepresenting the merchandise they sell through you?
-laugh- It's at $9.50 now, and is a "Hot Item." I'll bet there's a lot of confused non-/. people out there. :-)
