I missed playing the Wing Commander series, especially dealing with Manic, who came in it own as our own hated Biff from Back to Future Series in the 3rd series. Gotta love watching the videos of watching him getting slapped.
Hmmmm....I wonder what happens if I send an email to someone in there that is spamming me and I send them an ascii art of middle finger. Would that considered offensive by the government for them to send the death squad at me in US?
I may be self adversiting, but we offer excellent service and deals for people who want to have dedicated servers or have VPS server. So..give it a spin and I think you might like it.
Plus, I work there as Head Tech and we have excellent crew there. Come on over.:)
I use 802.11a for my wireless network and never had any problems with it since it don't get interface from other wireless or raditiation crap like telephone, microwaves and such.
I have dealt with this rootkit for nearly 4 months when it first appeared. The fairly safe methods for avoiding this is by 3 steps which I have used and it works well since then.
Move the/tmp to it own partition and set it as noexec, nosuid and give it plenty of space, around 200 to 500 megs for it.
Patch the kernel with either Grsecurity or Openwall Patch on 2.4.22 kernel and set it as mononthlic kernel, not modular with no open hooks for adding additional modules.
Then I installed the suphp module for PHP to run scripts as users instead of nobody, especially when people trying to exploit it. I get it at www.suphp.org and it works extremely well. Since the changes, I haven't seen any rootkits being successfully implemented on the servers I admin. And note the fact that I manages over 260 servers for various clients points to the track records.
One of the great ideas about it is that if you convert it into a floating datacenter, you can make good money off it. Like making it a haven for people who want to host contents without having to worry about being ganked off line, because you will be in the international waters, which no laws can touch you. And you can charge a bundle for it.
As for the internet connection, simple. Just get a tap into one of those underground pipes as your permanent connection and you be set. Plus due to the sheer size of that thing, it would be nearly stable and rock solid.
Why not come to Hostmatix.com or Hostforweb.com? I work for those companies and we have good prices which you can consider. Plus, if you need bigger spaces, we can setup something for you.
There is something else which I wanted to ask here. What about those who buy the web accounts from other webhosting company for your company?
How you deal with lot of different domains that is registered though various registars plus moving them to the new DNS Server? That would introduce lot more complexity than just simple change of the IP Addresses and DNS records. We talking about major movement of all Domains from one DNS Server to new DNS server plus new IP address allocation. What would you do to ensure the smooth movement of those?
I have written to him offering to take it under our facility which is under construction in Denver as the new home for the LFS. Unfortunably, it will not be online til December or January at the latest.
So....it is wait and see til he respond back on this and see if he takes it up on my offer on this.
For myself.. I rather wait til the Apache releases the 2.0.1 release which hopefully, the rest of the popular modules from 3rd party are released to work with 2.0 Version. In that, I am referring to the following popular items as listed: Perl Module, Improved Frontpage Module, Gzip Module, PHP which is almost done, Mod_Python, Tomcat which is almost done, and 2 other modules which I forget. Once those modules have been ported to the new API, then there will be a widespread use of the 2.0 Apache.
Til then, I will be using the 1.3 Version for time being til rest are caught up and tested before I move the production servers to 2.0.1. So...if you going to use it, please use it with care in case you are looking for the 3rd party modules to make it work with it.
I agree it is bad. Gilmore should realize that since he is advocating the Open Relay on his email server, he also opening himself up to various blacklists and potential lawsuits, particularly in California.
What I understand, he is one of the outstanding members in the Internet Community, but it seems he have lost some sense of the internet honor system and common sense. He have several methods of closing off the open-relay but his refusal to do so just make it lot harder for him.
Not sure which version of the SMTP Dameon he is using, but pretty much all have several options of how to close off the Open Relay to secured server.
There is SMTP-Authentication, which he can do with/etc/password or virtual/etc/mail/password list for non-shell accounts. There also POP before SMTP, which is little less secure, but still works well.
First Amendment do not apply when it comes to Open Relay Server, since the email server is just basically a means of transferring the traffic of the emails from one person to other. And also look at the fair use policy of the bandwidth as well. If the Open-Relay Server is used excessively, the Upstream Provider have every right to cut off the service due to the contract of fair use policy of the bandwidth on their network along with Spam Usage. This guy must have missed the point about the spam since people can get around by writing a program to change the sender's email address everytime for each spam so he can stuff tons of emails though the open Relay dispite of his modification.
I know I can, since it is sort of trivial to write a program to forge the email headers and rewrite all the sender's email address for every emails to bypass his mechanism at his email open-relay server. Plus...since he is maintaining the Open Relay Server, he is considered an ISP, even not officially since he run the email server for others to use. So...he have liability factor that he have to deal with people who can take him to court for aiding the spammers to use his service. Look at the several companies that was target of lawsuits because of the spamming methods they have done. So..he is making himself one of them.
Verio have legal options to deal with him since he is the user of the Verio's service, not the other way around.
The simple way to resolve this is by changing the DNS server where your domains point to. Currently, it points to tomorrow2.net which have 4 of them listed.
But from the cursory checking of that domain, it seems to belong to neither party unless it does belong to oneworldhosting.com, but not sure about it. But you can change it to point to your new hosting provider DNS so it will updates it properly and use the much higher serial number to override the old one that is floating around which they might consider the valid DNS which it isn't. It happens a few times and it is not much of an issue if you change the serial number to be higher than the old one that existed on the old DNS Server.
There was a feature that Slackware had which you can setup your own weird fonts in the console prompt or by SSH.
I been trying to figure out which one it is that I can grab and install so that I have fun with it. I was fun with the lazy fonts that I messed with years ago.
There is one that I think you can consider for this. If you go over to www.lids.org, it have LIDS system implemented into the kernel which have the ACL in there plus few other features implemented which is also useful.
I have implemented it into the Mandrake 7.2 Kernel without breaking anything and it works extremely well. So.. it is something you can consider looking into for your requirements since it is implemented into the kernel and pretty much filesystem independent as far I know of.
Okay... I read some of the comments that been posted here. Now... I have several questions that need to be answered before I get side-swiped by this tax fiasco here.
I am working on opening up a new datacenter here in Florida in Tampa area. The few questions I have is regarding about the sales and use taxes here. Granted.. most customers will be probably be out of state.... Note: International Clients...and do I have to charge the sales and use tax on them? That is the biggest question here. I think they do not get to pay those.
But here is the main question though. I know some of the questions are geared to E-Commerece sites...but what about co-location and webhosting facilities? Do the customers pay sales or use taxes on the servers that we lease or sell to the customers to be hosted on the premises? Same applies for the web sites that we are hosting for them.
That is what I am little fuzzy on and I figures other people out there can help on this subject, so I know what to expect regarding the tax laws. I mean... most of the customers are basically going to be calling it in or ordering it though the website instead of in person. So...how do I deal with the tax issues on those purchases that is being hosted on the premises?
This issue is probably the biggest issue that most ISP and Co-location providers usually faces, when it comes to the sales and use tax issues.
I have Athlon 700 with Biostar Motherboard with Mandrake 7.02 installed in it. Along with that, is the Matrox G400 Dual Head Monitor, Hollywood Plus DVD Decoder Card, DVD Drive, and SoundBlaster Live! Platinum. Never had a problem with them at all with dual 13.4 Gigs IBM Desktar 7200 drives.
The only issue I came across is the memory chips which can be an issue with certain motherboards depending on the quality of the memory and who made them. I used to have PC100 cheap ram stick and frankly, it causes the machine to locks up once a while. So I upgraded it to PC133 Micron memory chip and violia.... it works like charm and never had a lockup for past 4 months since I had it running without any shutdown.
One advice, be sure to check on the quality of the power supply and the memory chip since they can be real picky on those. BTW...did I mention that I have 512Meg of RAM here?
Cannot wait for another development machine from my client which will be even more fun...which I specified 1Gig Athlon, Asus Motherboard and 512Meg of Ram...with probably Matrox G400 unless Matrox come out with something newer. Not exactly partial to GeoForce Chips til they get the drivers GPLed for X Servers.
Anyone got any advice on where to purchase the Alpha Motherboards and Processors directly instead of getting pre-built machines? Wanna to get those.
I looked over the setup for those servers and frankly, they seems to be quite an overkill, for this site itself. Maybe I am wrong, but if this site handles over that many people, since I have no clue on how many been hitting the site, then the setup is not bad. But Quad Xeon Processors for MySQL? What wrong with Dual Pentium II/III or single Athlon MySQL server?
I can understand the need for failover for the MySQL which is a major requirement, but the computer itself is quite a major overkill. I do adminstration for over 16 different servers over 3 different clients and we uses Mandrake Distros on those and only problem I usually finds is the MySQL can be really stressful when there is many people using it on the same server with the apache server. I am in process of moving the MySQL over to new delicated server so it can handle that among several servers, and maybe that might call for beefy processor to handle the load.
If the site is setup to handle... let say.... 100,000 hits a day, what server configuration is needed for this? With MySQL on it own server, of course.:)
Well... from what I have seen posted all around so far of late.... it seems prudent to wait to hear from Linus on his decision regarding the high availability clustering technology that TurboLinux have created. If TurboLinux do release the code regarding that code, and Linus do accept it, then all much better for all of us.
So... let wait and see til we hear from Linus or Alan Cox regarding that technology. But it would be good uses to have that feature added into the kernel. Speaking of that...what up with Beowolf Clustering technology? I have not seen that being incorporated into the Kernel and only been released and available from Redhat as Extreme Linux if I remember. Correct me that if I am wrong on that part.
But anyhow... go and bug Linus and Alan Cox and pressure TurboLinux to contribute the entire code for the HA Clustering technology to the Kernel source tree so we can take a shot at it and improve it if needed to make it better than it is right now. That is the whole point of the Open Source Movement... for everyone to contribute to it and improve on it to make it better instead of closed source like Microsoft NT currently is which is downright buggy. Heck.. it trips up and dies when you try to poke at it with a stick.:)
To tell you the truth.. I already knew who it is. It is basically Microsoft since they are cracking down quite few sites that is doing parodies of Microsoft plus those sites that likes to use Linux over MS
Microsoft really need to get their act together and realize the freedom of free speech...and basically..they cannot do anything about it.
GIMP does support the PNG and the alpha channel...but it is sort of very difficult to use. I only succeeded doing it once some time back and I cannot for life of me remember how to do it so I can achieve the transparent feature under GIMP.
I have lot of great graphics but they are at their best if they are done under PNG rather than GIF or JPEG due to overlapping of graphics on the webpage. But one thing really sucks...the GIMP mailing list is sort of dead and I have not gotten a reply on how to do the transparency effect with GIMP for past day and half. Kind of interesting compared to high volume mailing list that I got used to.:)
Man... last I looked.. it is now at $5100... Someone gotta notify CNN and have them do a story. Hell.. I just do that right now. Man.. that is one of the most funniest story I ever came across about this.:)
Well well well... I just mooseyed over to their website and noticed that it been slashdotted to death. Good news for us.
Now... as for the domain name problem.. this trademark infridgement problem is getting totally out of hand here. Toys R Us should back down from it since the website have been running for past 5 years so they should have "grandfather clause" part since they registered their domain name before Toys R Us did from my check with InterNIC. So... Toys R Us should get the f*ck off their ass and learn to understand that when it comes to the domain names... the trademarks should not apply since it is global... not US based. Frankly.. it is getting nutty here.
Anyone want to register Winblowznuts.com?:) I would enjoy to see what Microsoft want to comment on that.:)
